With a record eight Golden Globe wins and 30 nominations under her belt, Meryl Streep is a fixture at the annual awards ceremony, to say the least. But she’s quick to point out she wasn’t always the firey orator or women’s activist we know from recent years. In 1980, she was a new mom lactating through her dress.

“I was there for Kramer vs. Kramer just after giving birth to my first child,” Streep recalled during a 2015 BBC interview. “In those days, they didn’t lend dresses, and I didn’t have any more to buy something, so I wore my wedding dress. It was a perfectly nice white silk dress, but the luncheon went on, and I was breastfeeding, and two o’clock came, three o’clock came, and boom!”

Right before Streep won her first Golden Globe, she began to lactate.

“It was not good, and I sat with my arms crossed over my chest. They called my name, and I walked to the stage with my arms crossed and accepted the award one-handed, while still covering my breasts,” she said. “They must have thought I was so odd. It was so embarrassing. But only to LA County. No one else saw!”

(At the time, the Golden Globes were only broadcast on local CCTV.)

Times have certainly changed. Lactating through a dress at an awards ceremony? Sounds like something Chrissy Teigen would Snapchat.
