Strangers Use Photoshop to Help a Grieving Dad
Internet kindness hit a tear-jerking level this week. Nathen Steffel posted a photo of his newborn daughter Sophia on Reddit, asking someone to remove the tubes from the photo. "My daughter recently passed away after a long battle in the children's hospital. Since she was in the hospital her whole life, we never were able to get a photo without all her tubes. Can someone remove the tubes from this photo?" he posted on the site. The responses, nearly 3000 of them, contained an overwhelming amount of support, sympathy, and shared grief. Steffel received countless Photoshopped, painted or drawn images of baby Sophia, tube-free, to remember her by. Sophia lost her battle with a hepatic hemangioma in her liver at just 6 weeks old in Cincinnati's Children's Hospital. "This is really amazing. Everyone, you have made my day. All I wanted was a nice picture. What I received was a lot of love and support from a bunch of strangers. A long with a lot of great photos, drawings and paintings. Thanks everyone!" Steffel responded on Reddit. This community effort joins the ranks of other organizations that help parents cope with the loss of babies, like Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep, which also creates portraits. Have you experienced the loss of a baby?
