Being a baby shower guest sounds like easy business, right? Simply RSVP on time, pick a gift from the registry, wear something nice, play the Purse Game, eat some cake and your guest duties are done.

Not so fast. There’s still the matter of baby shower wishes. What to write in a baby shower card seems easy enough, but when it’s time to put pen to paper, you may find you don’t know the right baby shower messages to include.

Maybe you don’t know the mama that well, or maybe you know her so well that wrapping up the creation of life into a sentence is just too daunting a task. Before you decide to ditch the baby shower card messages in exchange for a more simple “To:” and “From:” generic gift tag, try a few lines from our long list of ideas of what to write in a baby shower card.

Baby Shower Card Etiquette

You wouldn’t think you’d need advice from Miss Manners regarding what to write in a baby shower card, but following a few easy baby shower card etiquette rules will ensure you won’t make a baby or mommy-to-be faux pas.

  • To whom it may concern: Even though baby showers have traditionally been ladies-only affairs, modern times mean that the celebrations are changing. The invitation may give you clues as to whom your baby shower messages should be addressed. If it doesn’t, inquire with the hostess when you RSVP. Or, play it safe and address your baby shower wishes to the “New Parents.”
  • Speak from the heart. While we’ve included plenty of great baby shower wishes to select from below, if you want your baby shower messages to be your own, use words from the heart.
  • Open to the public. If the mama is your best friend or sibling, you may have plenty of inside jokes. However, since you won’t know if she—or a gift assistant—will be reading the card messages aloud, skip any wishes for baby shower that might be inappropriate or too easily taken out of context.
  • Don’t forget baby. Mom and dad may be the center of attention at the shower, but don’t forget baby! In addition to baby shower wishes for the parents-to-be, say something sweet meant for the wee one entering the world.
  • K.I.S.S. When writer’s block sets in, K.I.S.S it. That is: “keep it simple, stupid.” After all, sometimes short and sweet is just right.
  • Where’s the love? Signing off the card with “love” may be sincere and heartfelt for someone who’s close to you. However, if the parents-to-be are coworkers or someone you’ve known for just a short while, consider one of the closers below for your baby shower wishes.
    • Best,
    • Your friend,
    • Blessings to you,
    • Happiness to you and your new family,
    • Happy baby!
    • Over the moon with excitement,
    • Joy to you,
    • XOXO!
    • Hugs and cuddles to your little one to come,

Baby Book Messages

Some baby showers do away with disposable greeting cards and request guests to instead write their baby shower wishes inside the cover of a beloved children’s book. That can be a lot of pressure given your baby book messages may live on that child’s bookshelf for years to come, whereas a card can just end up in the trash. The good news is that so many wonderful baby and kids’ books can help inspire what to write in a baby shower card. Here are a few of our reads for little ones and the baby book messages to match.
