The 8 Best Toddler Sandals for Warm Weather Adventures
In a nutshell:
Based on our staff’s firsthand experience, survey feedback from The Bump community and advice from two podiatric experts, we chose the Salt Water Sandals Sun-San Surfer as the overall best toddler sandal.
As a mom of two active boys, I know how exciting it is to swap those bulky boots and lace-up shoes for lightweight baby sandals and toddler flip-flops when the warm weather hits. With summer just around the corner, it’s time to gear up for family outings, whether planning a hike, heading to the splash pad, or simply enjoying some fun in the sun.
“Once a toddler is walking confidently on their own, usually sometime after their first birthday, it’s fine to introduce sandals,” says Miguel Cunha, DPM, a board-certified foot surgeon in Manhattan, New York. “The key is making sure they’re past the wobbly stage. If they can walk across a room without support and manage different surfaces like grass or pavement, their feet are ready for sandals.”
Whether you’re looking for something easy to slip on for the beach or a more durable option for a family hike, the right sandals can make all the difference in giving your toddler the freedom to move comfortably and confidently. To help you get your little one ready for all the adventures ahead, we’ve rounded up some of the best toddler sandals to shop in time for the sunny days to come.
To help you find the best toddler sandals on the market today:

They come in a wide range of styles and colors for both boys and girls, and yes, even adults can snag a pair. When choosing toddler sandals, it’s essential to keep a few key things in mind to ensure they’re both comfortable and safe for your little one’s developing feet. Be mindful of features like flexible soles, secure straps, and breathable materials to keep their feet cool and supported during all their summer adventures. And while style is always a fun factor, comfort and safety should be top priorities when choosing toddler sandals. Because little feet are still growing and developing, it’s crucial to find a pair that fits properly, offering enough wiggle room without slipping or being too tight.
A size chart (like the one here) is a great starting point, but according to Cunha and Elizabeth Daughtry, a board-certified podiatrist, here are the key features to look for:
- Soft, cushioned insoles. Look for sandals with comfortable footbeds that provide gentle padding for growing feet. “Walking barefoot or wearing soft, flexible shoes is important for early walkers to help with proper development and allow for muscles and bones to grow naturally,” advises Daughtry.
- Structured heel support. A firm heel cup helps stabilize your toddler’s steps and promotes healthy foot development.
- Flexible soles—especially at the front. “Flexibility is really important, especially in the front where the toes bend,” says Dr. Cunha. The sandal should bend with your child’s foot while still supporting the arch and heel.
- Secure, non-irritating straps. Straps should hold the foot in place without digging into the skin. Two adjustable points—at the ankle and over the toes—can help ensure a snug, secure fit.
- Breathable materials. Soft leather or mesh lets air in, keeping feet cool and comfortable. Avoid stiff plastics or synthetic fabrics that trap moisture and can cause blisters. “Plastic and synthetic materials do not allow for breathability and can trap moisture,” says Daughtry.
- Easy-to-use closures. “Velcro is usually the go-to because it’s quick, adjustable, and even toddlers can start to do it themselves,” Dr. Cunha notes. Buckles are fine too, but may be harder for small hands. “Bungee style closure also offers a good option for quick and easy adjustment and toddler self-use,” Daughtry adds.
- Avoid elastic-only closures. “I generally don’t recommend elastic-only closures because they tend to loosen over time and don’t offer a great fit,” Cunha explains.
