Meaning:follower of Christ
Christian actually started as a girls' name during the Middle Ages but was more commonly used for boys in the 18th century. That’s when the hero of John Bunyan’s book Pilgrim’s Progress became widely known. Like Christopher, the name Christian is related to the Greek word Khristos, which is translated from the Hebrew word for “messiah.” The Greeks or the Romans were the first to call Jesus’s followers Christians, but the early disciples and followers of the faith were more likely to call themselves “believers” or “the faithful.”
