Esmeralda

emerald
ORIGIN: Spanish
POPULARITY: 735
As if emeralds weren’t sparkly enough, Esmeralda comes along and adds an extra dose of glitter to this gemstone of a name. The Spanish equivalent of the green jewel has an exotic, romantic air and suits any girl, from any culture, though it’s especially popular among Hispanic-Americans. Disney lent it more cred when it gave the name to a heroine in the film The Hunchback of Notre Dame, from the famous novel by Victor Hugo. Hollywood’s Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes gave their first-born daughter this pretty name in 2014.

In “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” Esmeralda is a dancer who lived in hidden catacombs in Paris. She’s an outspoken, compassionate woman who looks out for others—she was one of the few to show kindness to the deformed Quasimodo—and considers her pet goat, Djali, a confidante and assistant. She alone protested against sinister Frollo’s reign, and despite his trying to get back at her by having her arrested, the quick-thinking Esmeralda outsmarts him every time.
