Still holding space in your heart for the lyrics of “Defying Gravity”? (And don’t even get us started with the battle cry!).

Ditto.

One of the biggest-ever musicals to grace the stage (and silver screen!), with iconic stars and a soundtrack that’ll knock your pointy black boots off, Wicked is the moment—and we’re never getting over it.

If you’re just as obsessed as we are—and you’ve got a little munchkin on the way—there’s a good chance you’re going to want to share your life-long love for the musical with them, too. Fret not—because we’ve got exactly what you need to raise your future fellow Ozian. Enter: Wicked names for baby, plucked right from the movies, books and Broadway show!

Naming anything can be a pretty confusifying process, as they say in Oz—let alone a tiny human. But all it took for Gregory Maguire, the wiz behind the entire Wicked story, was a little creativity to conjure the right monikers for the characters we now know and love. (That’s right—most of the names in the novels, in true fantasy-genre fashion, are totally made up). The good news? You’ve come to the most swankified place to peruse Wicked-ly good name possibilities for baby.

So trust your instincts, close your eyes and leap… right into our list of Wicked-inspired names, that is! The options are unliiiiiiiiiiiimited.

Elphaba Thropp

The wickedest witch (and baby name) there ever was—or so the Ozians are made to believe at the end of Act I. In this timeless tale of good and green, we meet the intelligent and ambitious Elphaba Thropp, whose uncanny “verdigris” stirs seething judgment from the people of Oz. But a shot at Madame Morrible’s sorcery seminar helps her to realize there might be more to her emerald hue than she thought—maybe a special gift she can use to finally make good. Maybe even a chance to defy gravity.

Glinda Upland

She’s pretty, she’s perky, she’s popular, she’s pink—she’s Glinda the Good! And the Wicked story just wouldn’t be without her adventures at dear, old Shiz. Ditzy, charismatic and vain (but caring underneath it all), it’s no surprise that Glinda doesn’t see eye-to-eye with her new roomie, Elphaba, at first. With time, understanding and a little “toss, toss!”, though, she learns that appearances aren’t everything—and the witch foes become witch friends who change each other for the better. After all, “pink goes good with green.”

Fiyero Tigelaar

Fiyero, Arjiki prince of the Vinkus, swoops into Shiz halfway through the school year after being kicked out of several other learning institutions. We learn, via dance sequence, that his cool and carefree exterior might actually be a cover-up for a more deep-rooted issue—all this time, he’s been coasting through life with no real sense of meaning or direction. Could his budding friendship with Elphaba bring him purpose? Or—better yet—love? (Not to mention, a potential name idea for your dashing little man?).

Nessarose Thropp

The younger of the Thropp daughters, Nessarose enters the Wicked scene as Elphaba’s “tragically beautiful” sister. Unlike Elphaba, Nessarose is adored by her father and the students at Shiz—but even the most loved characters can be the most layered. Her name, a super-pretty blend of Nessa and Rose, meaning “miracle” and “rose”, has just about everything you’d want in a moniker for a gorgeous baby girl—and there’s certainly nothing tragic about that!

Boq Woodsman

Clumsy, quirkily dressed and completely and utterly Glinda-obsessed—that’s Boq Woodsman in a nutshell for you. And in both the movie and musical, we watch as he desperately tries (and fails—bless his heart!) to woo Miss “Popular.” Meanwhile, sparks fly between the Munchkin boy and Nessarose. But only Wicked fans who’ve seen the Broadway show or read the books will know if a happily-ever-after lies in wait.

The Wizard of Oz

Nothing is truly as it seems in Wicked, or the Land of Oz. And if you’ve been following this iconic story since forever, you’ll know that the Wizard has a few secrets of his own—even surrounding his own name. In fact, “Oz” is actually an abbreviation of the Wizard’s real name, which, according to the books, is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkel Emmanuel Ambroise Diggs. But we’ll let you decide whether Oz, Ozzy or Oscar works best for your wicked-awesome little one.

More "Wicked" Baby Names From the Musical, Movies and Books

Of course, Wicked-inspired names for baby aren’t limited to the musical, films or their main characters. Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, based on L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, is where it all starts—and where you’ll find lots of other thrillifying monikers tied to Ozian lore. Take a peek at some of the top picks below. They’re all grand—and all green!
