There are plenty of unrealistic expectations when it comes to being a new mom but perhaps the most toxic is the idea that your body should “bounce back” after birth. Just months or even days after going through one of the most physically challenging events of their life, mothers are expected to head back to the gym, curate careful diets and above all, get back to their pre-baby bodies.

The idea of “bouncing back” is an exhausting ideal and frankly unreasonable, considering the changes pregnant bodies have been through, but that doesn’t keep this out-of-date thinking from sneaking into daily conversations and causing anxiety among new moms. The latest to be subjected to these comments—new mom and pop icon Jessie J.

“Couple of people have said to me ‘I bet you can’t wait to get your body back,’” Jessie wrote in a post on her Instagram Stories. “I don’t want to go back,” she wrote. “That body is gone. I want my body to go forward. I’m getting my body forward,” she added, not only rejecting the idea but supporting the evolution of the new her.

“That’s the vibe ladies. Embrace that bowdddddy!” she wrote.

While more parents, doctors and celebrities speak out against “bouncing back,” Jessie J’s addition to the conversation reminds us that motherhood and life is all about growth and change. There’s no need for moms to hold onto what they may have looked like before or what they “should” look like after, power and happiness comes from accepting what you have now and celebrating your postpartum body in all stages and sizes.

Jessie J Shares Her Rainbow Baby’s Name

One month after pop singer Jessie J welcomed her son into the world, the new mom has shared his moniker with the world.

On June 12, the Bang Bang singer posted a photo of her newborn jokingly “flexing” with the caption, “Mans like…Sky Safir Cornish Colman.” Sky, which traditionally means cloud, is a cheeky nod to her long road to motherhood and the arrival of her rainbow baby. The rest of baby’s name he takes from his dad Chanan Safir Colman and his mom’s birth name Jessica Ellen Cornish.

Clearly smitten with Sky, the day before her son officially turned one-month-old, Jessie J, reflected on her life as a mom thus far. “Tomorrow, you are a month old. It’s felt like one long best day of my entire life,” she joked. “Mummy and Daddy love you more than anything in this world baby boy. And if you have followed my journey, you would have often shared in my pain. Please join me in sharing in my joy.”

Jessie J Welcomes Her Son

The Price Tag singer first shared the news of her son’s birth in a simple Instagram story featuring black and white text on May 19. “A week ago my whole life changed. My son entered this world and my heart grew twice the size. The feeling is indescribable. I am flying in love,” she wrote.

"He is magic. He is all my dreams come true. He is my whole [world]. He and I are both doing great. I am soaking up every second and still can’t believe he is real, mine and here happy tears For all of you that have followed my journey to this moment, thank you for all your continued love and support,” she said.

Jessie J Shares The Ups and Downs of Pregnancy

Before her son’s arrival, the UK music icon had openly shared the ups and downs of her exciting pregnancy journey since announcing she was pregnant with her rainbow baby. She shared the news on January 6 with a compilation of bump photos and videos from the beginning of her pregnancy.

“I am so happy and terrified to finally share this,” she wrote in the caption of her Instagram Reel. She asked her followers to quote “please be gentle with me” as she navigated her journey after a pregnancy loss in November 2021. “To get pregnant was a miracle in itself and an experience I will never forget and I know I will have again,” she wrote at the time. “Honestly, ya girl just wants to ugly cry in public in a catsuit eating a chocolate-covered pickle with no questions asked,” she joked at the end of the post.

Not long after her announcement the new mom went viral for her video depicting the realities of pregnancy. Firmly in the first trimester of her pregnancy, Jessie J shared a reel depicting the emotional rollercoaster and physical struggle.

“I was warned about that first trimester and it was WOOFY WOOF,” she captioned the video. From morning sickness to crying in bed, to joyful times spent with family and friends, Jessie J effortlessly captures and vulnerably shares her first-trimester journey.

Hundreds of parents were eager to support Jessie J and share their own experiences in the comments. Celebrity fashion stylist Lo VonRumpf commented, “on my way with a big bowl of garlic pesto,” while author Shakira Akabusi sympathized, “I feel you! Exhausting, oh the memories, but still so amazing.”

Another fan thanked Jessie J for sharing her experience, adding, "This is what I love, no matter what journey you are on you allow us to be a part of it. What a beautiful journey you’re on, it’s all going to be worth it J.”

Congratulations to Jessie J and Colman on their new life as parents!
