In a nutshell:
Based on hands-on product testing from nine families, expert advice and survey feedback from more than 300 parents in The Bump community, we selected the Chicco Fit 360 ClearTex Rotating Car Seat as the overall best rotating car seat. It excelled across testing categories, and in particular stood out because of its straightforward installation, ease of rotating and adjusting and its unique magnetic chest clip that makes buckling kids in a breeze.

New parents quickly realize how awkward it can be to safely situate a kid in their car seat—especially if you’re recovering from a C-section, have any pre-existing mobility issues or your little one is wiggly and uncooperative. This is where rotating car seats can be a real game-changer. “Rotating car seats make buckling and fastening the child into the car seat so much easier,” says Elizabeth Sagan, a certified passenger safety technician with Safe Kids Connecticut. These innovative models actually swivel around to face the car door, so you can buckle baby in and gently lift them out without contorting your body or straining your back. “Because of this ergonomic design, they’re more back-friendly for parents than the traditional rear- and forward-facing car seats,” explains Sagan.

Apart from the practical applications, a rotating car seat makes it easier to spot any potential safety hazards—such as twisted straps or other obstructions—when buckling your child in. “Rotating car seats give parents a clear, face-to-face view of their child and the car seat’s harness, allowing them to ensure each strap is fastened and adjusted correctly every time,” explains Joshua Dilts, father of three and lead car seat product manager at Chicco. While some parents swear by turning car seats, they do tend to be more expensive than standard models. With that in mind, we tested an array of the most popular swiveling car seats to help you figure out which will be the best fit for your family—and will offer you the most bang for your buck.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Rotating Car Seats

Image: Brittany V., Shelby B., Shelby G.

The Bump editors conducted extensive research to identify the top 15 rotating car seats on the market. Carefully reviewing product features, specs and customer reviews to identify which were particularly good for specific uses, we then created a shortlist of nine to test. From there:

  • We enlisted nine families to test top-rated swivel car seats with their own children, ranging in age from 4 months to nearly 4 years. These parents installed the rotating car seats in their vehicles, buckled their kids in and out of the seats and took them on long and short rides. After extensive hands-on use, they evaluated each product and gave it a score out of 10 across a selection of criteria, including ease of installation, ease of use, features and design, value for money and, of course, safety.
  • We surveyed over 300 parents in The Bump community and asked them to rate the rotating car seats they’ve used with their own kids, and to comment on their overall experience.
  • We interviewed three experts—a certified passenger safety technician, a lead car seat product manager and a pediatrician—for installation tips and advice on what to look for in a rotating car seat.
  • We checked scientific research and recent law changes regarding car seat safety, consulted crash-test ratings from Consumer Reports and followed advice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and other expert sources.
  • Due to the ongoing NHSTA investigation of the popular Evenflo Revolve360 Rotating Car Seat, we’ve decided not to include it in our roundup at this time. We’re waiting until the investigation has concluded to test this model.
  • When choosing which rotating car seats to feature in this roundup, we considered several factors, such as dimensions, height and weight limitations, product weight and degree of rotation, to name a few.
  • Because no two families are the same, we scoured forums, social media channels, message boards and customer reviews to see how these car seats performed for a wide range of parents nationwide.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

Best Rotating Car Seats

Overall best rotating convertible car seat

Chicco Fit 360 ClearTex Rotating Car Seat

What We Love
  • Red-to-green safety indicators
  • Tethered seat removal tool for added security
  • 15-position headrest
  • Magnetic chest clip and rebounding crotch strap
  • GREENGUARD Gold Certified ClearTex fabric
  • Additional bases can be purchased separately
Things To Consider
  • Heavy seat and base, according to our tester

Rotating car seats are all about delivering on convenience without sacrificing safety—and the Chicco Fit 360 ClearTex Rotating Car Seat certainly offers both. It not only boasts some unique, helpful features, but it also excelled across all testing categories, earning it the Best of The Bump award for overall best rotating convertible car seat. (See all of this year’s Best of The Bump winners.)

From the get-go, our tester, Brittany, a mom of four, was impressed by the simple installation. “I have installed more than a handful of different car seats between all my children, and this was by far the easiest to install,” she says. “It’s the same install with rear- or forward-facing since you just install the base one way and then attach the seat and rotate it to the position you’re using.” Plus, you can purchase additional bases for this car seat separately, so it’s a great choice for families who use multiple vehicles and don’t want to purchase car seats for each.

As its name implies, the Chicco Fit 360 rotates 360 degrees, making it simple to lift your child in and out from both a rear- and forward-facing position. Brittany was a fan of how easy it was to swivel. “You can squeeze the side handles to rotate it sideways,” she says, adding that “once your child is buckled in, you can squeeze the sides again to rotate it. This is especially helpful with toddlers since they’re bigger.” For added convenience when buckling your child in either mode, there’s a flex-forward crotch strap that rebounds when not in use, so it’s conveniently out of the way (and not under your child’s bottom) as you get your little one situated. It also has a five-point harness that adjusts automatically when you lengthen the headrest, which has 15 height positions, more than any others we tested. In particular, Brittany was a fan of the magnetic chest clip. “It clips shut really easily, which is nice,” she tells us. And, rest assured, even though it’s a piece of cake for adults to clip and unclip, it’s still toddler-proof.

Image: Brittany V.

Of course, safety is going to be top of mind for any car seat purchase. To help parents ensure that the Chicco Fit 360 is securely locked onto its base, it has red-to-green safety indicators that switch color to visually confirm when it’s in the correct position (as well as six seat recline positions and two level indicators). It also has a unique orange seat removal tool, which is the only way to separate the car seat and the base. This is tethered onto the seat itself so it can’t go missing, and it offers an additional layer of protection. If that’s not all, the seat also has a steel bracket on its back that connects to the base for extra stability, and features Chicco’s signature DuoGuard design for side-impact protection. This includes a steel-reinforced base, a deep, rigid shell and expanded polystyrene (EPS) energy-absorbing foam around the head and torso areas. After testing, Brittany rated this swivel seat’s safety level very highly. “The seat stays attached really well, even though you can rotate. [] I feel very safe driving my kids around using this seat and don’t have any concerns,” she shares.

This 360 car seat is made from Chicco’s ClearTex fabric, which has been GREENGUARD Gold Certified. These textiles are inherently fire-resistant and entirely free from added chemicals, so you can count on them to be gentle against baby’s delicate skin while still meeting federal safety standards.

Although this car seat has plenty of pros, one possible downside is that the seat and base are rather bulky and heavy (at nearly 34 pounds, the seat is the second heaviest option on this list). That said, Brittany says she would buy this seat herself and wishes she had it for her older kids. She raves, “The seat adjusts really easily and makes it so easy to adjust to what baby or toddler needs to be safe and comfortable.”

Dimensions: 20" (L) x 18.3" (W) x 25.8" (H) | Weight (without base): 33.8 lbs. | Height limit: 49" | Weight capacity: 4 to 40 lbs. (rear-facing), 25 to 65 lbs. (front-facing) | Booster seat: No | One-handed rotation: Yes

Our product tester says:
“I would definitely buy this seat now that I’ve tried it and wish I had it for my other kids. [] Baby feels very snug and safe in the seat. The seat stays attached really well, even though you can rotate it. It doesn’t move on its own, you have to squeeze handles on both sides to move it and you have a safety clip you push into the base to release the seat before you can remove it from the base.”

Best budget-friendly rotating car seat

Joie Chili Spin 360 2-in-1 Rotating Car Seat
Image: Target
What We Love
  • Reasonable price point
  • Sturdy anti-rebound bar and base, according to our tester
  • LockTight lock-off panel for simple installation
  • Red-to-green safety indicators
Things To Consider
  • Older toddlers may be too tall for rear-facing
  • Fabric isn’t free from fire-retardant chemicals

Since 2011, Joie has been a go-to brand in Europe for innovative baby gear at great value. They launched in the US last summer, so now American parents can take advantage of the same high-quality products at reasonable price points. This includes the Joie Chili Spin 360 2-in-1 Rotating Car Seat, which earned this year’s title of the best budget-friendly rotating car seat in our Best of The Bump awards. Our tester, Shelby, told us this swivel seat offered great value for money—and though it’s one of the least expensive on the market, that doesn’t mean you’ll have to compromise on convenience.

Shelby loved how smooth, effective and easy to use the rotation feature is. “Getting my 25-pound 10-month-old in this car seat was life-changing. The spin function makes it so easy to safely set him in the seat, buckle, spin and lock his seat rear-facing. I don’t have to worry about awkwardly holding him and placing him in the seat while straining my back,” she praises. To rotate the seat, simply pull the 360-degree handle on the side, turn it to your liking and you’re ready to go.

Image: Shelby G.

Similar to competitors at higher price points (the most expensive option on this list is $300 more than this pick!), the Joie Chili rotates 360 degrees and can be used forward- and rear-facing. No matter which way you’re setting it up, this model has a pull handle so you can adjust it to one of four preset angles. Check the level indicators on the side of the base to know when you’ve got the correct position, then open and close the LockTight lock-off panel to secure it, whether you’re using a LATCH system or seat belt. This swivel seat also has colored safety indicators on the base that switch from red to green when it’s locked into place. Shelby was impressed by how straightforward it was to install this car seat, and was a big fan of the safety components that it offered—particularly the incredibly secure base. “The anti-rebound bar is one of my favorite features. It looks and feels very sturdy,” she tells us. “The car seat is extremely secured in both the LATCH and seatbelt installation methods.”

Image: Shelby G.

Another reason the Joie Chili stood out as a great option for families on a budget is that it’s well-suited to a variety of ages. Shelby tested it with her three kids and found that it worked well for all of them. “My 4-year-old (forward-facing), 3-year-old (forward-facing) and 10-month-old (rear-facing) all fit comfortably in this car seat,” she reports. “This car seat’s adjustable harness height and crotch strap make it very easily customizable to fit my children.” She did point out that her 3-year-old (who’s only in the 50th percentile for her height) felt squished in the rear-facing position. But all in all, Shelby recommends it to other parents, especially those with infants and toddlers. “The spin function is particularly helpful when buckling rear-facing children into smaller vehicles. The seat is a great value for money,” she says.

Dimensions: 20.1" (L) x 18.4" (W) x 26 to 33.5" (H) | Weight: 27.1 lbs. | Height limit: 49" | Weight capacity: 4 to 40 lbs. (rear-facing); 30 to 65 lbs. (front-facing) | Booster seat: No | One-handed rotation: No

Our product tester says:
“I think this car seat is reasonably priced. The potential usage definitely matches the price. This car seat can grow with a child, from rear- to forward-facing.”

Best all-in-one rotating car seat

What We Love
  • High overall height and weight limit
  • SensorSafe Smart Technology alerts parents to potential issues
  • Equipped with linear side-impact protection
  • Removable UPF 50+ sun canopy
  • Magnetic buckle holders
  • GREENGUARD Gold Certified fabric
Things To Consider
  • High price point
  • Heavy compared to other models

If you’re searching for a rotating car seat that your family can rely on from those early newborn days and into elementary school, look no further than the Cybex Callisto G 360. This model is one of the only options on the market that can be used for little ones as small as 4 pounds in rear-facing mode all the way up to kids who are 57 inches tall and up to 120 pounds as a booster seat down the line. “Both of my children fit well in the Cybex Callisto G 360, and there was plenty of room for each of them based on their age and size. It adapted easily between my 11-month-old and my tall 3-year-old, adjusting smoothly to fit each child securely and comfortably,” our product tester Christine tells us. This swivel car seat certainly delivers on multi-stage functionality, earning it the title of best all-in-one rotating car seat.

Image: Christine B.

According to Christine, setting up the Cybex Callisto G 360 couldn’t have been easier, thanks to its SafeLock System, a panel that secures and tightens LATCH systems and seat belt paths. In fact, installing the seat in both rear-facing and forward-facing positions with the LATCH system took her less than one minute. “I’ve installed a number of car seats over the years, and this one was definitely one of the easiest and straightforward,” she praises. Due to the 12-position adjustable headrest and harness straps, adapting the seat for use across multiple children is also a breeze. “Adjusting the harness height between kids was simple thanks to the no-rethread system—I just pulled up on the headrest to reposition it, which took only seconds,” Christine shares. Though her tall 3-year-old felt a bit cramped in rear-facing, he was very comfortable in forward-facing mode. Meanwhile, the rear-facing position was ideal for her 11-month-old. “The recline angle felt appropriate and supportive for my baby. I typically keep my kids rear-facing until around age 2, and I think this seat is a great fit for that age range,” Christine says.

Image: Christine B.

The Cybex Callisto G 360 is also complete with an array of safety features and premium accessories that parents will appreciate. The five-point harness is equipped with SensorSafe Smart Technology, a system that connects to an app on your phone and alerts you to potential concerns, like if the clip becomes unlocked or if the car’s temperature becomes unsafe. Plus, the Callisto G 360—along with all other car seats from Cybex—is fitted with their signature Linear Side-Impact Protection, which offers an additional layer of security in the event of an accident. According to the brand, this feature can reduce crash force by up to 25 percent if a side-impact collision occurs.

This car seat’s design is optimized for safety as well as convenience. To make buckling your child in even easier, the harness can be lifted with the integrated magnetic holders to keep straps out of the way. Moreover, this model also features a removable UPF 50+ sun canopy, similar to one you’d find on a stroller. “It was especially great for toddlers who still nap in the car,” Christine says. “The overall design felt high-end and thoughtfully made.” While this rotating convertible car seat comes at a high price point, it offers families unparalleled adaptability and longevity that they’ll be able to count on for years to come.

Dimensions: 21.7" (L) x 18.7" (W) x x 25.5" (H) | Weight (without base): 35 lbs. | Height limit: 57" | Weight capacity: 4 to 40 lbs. (rear-facing); 26.5 to 65 lbs. (front-facing); 40 to 120 lbs. (booster) | Booster seat: Yes | One-handed rotation: No

Our product tester says:
“I would recommend the Cybex Callisto G 360, especially for first-time parents or those looking for a luxury convertible seat with thoughtful features. It was extremely easy to install, felt very secure and both of my children fit comfortably in it (both front-facing and rear-facing).”

Best slim rotating car seat

What We Love
  • Narrow width is great for backseats with multiple kids
  • SnugLock panel for easy installation
  • Red-to-green safety indicators
  • Graco ProtectPlus Engineered design
  • Reasonable price point
Things To Consider
  • Some parents wish it were more padded

It’s no secret that rotating car seats can be bulky, and because of their swivel function, they also need more space than traditional models. As a result, most aren’t well-suited for families that need to fit multiple children side-by-side in their back row, or for those with small vehicles. But with the Graco EasyTurn 360 2-in-1 Convertible Car Seat, this won’t be as much of an issue. This model is the narrowest car seat we tested, measuring just 17 inches across (whereas most others are an inch or two wider). For this reason, it secured the title of the best slim rotating car seat—and our tester, Sasha, definitely agrees. “I was a bit worried that it was going to be a tight fit. However, once it was placed in [my husband’s] truck correctly, I realized that there was still plenty of room for him to move his seat back (he is 6'5"!) and he still had plenty of room when the car seat was rear-facing,” she tells us.

Image: Sasha W.

Even though it has a slim profile, the Graco EasyTurn 360 is packed with plenty of thoughtful, high-quality details and features. According to Sasha, this car seat was a breeze to install (both rear- and forward-facing), in part because of the Graco SnugLock panel, which makes it simple to set up and secure with either a seat belt path or the LATCH system. She was also a fan of how easy it was to rotate with the push of a button and how the red-to-green safety indicators let her know when it was locked into the correct position. Keep in mind, though, that if you have more than one car seat in your back row, turning this car seat may not be as smooth as it would be otherwise.

One potential downside is that, because of the narrow design, some parents find that the seat could be more padded. That said, our tester didn’t find this to be the case. “One thing I love about this car seat is how comfortable both my daughters look while sitting in it. They both have enough room, and the padding is soft and comfortable,” says Sasha. Not only did she find the seat comfortable, but she also rated it highly for safety. This model has undergone extensive impact, rollover and extreme temperature testing, with an acceleration speed and crash force approximately twice that of the federal requirements for added peace of mind. All things considered, the Graco EasyTurn 360 is a solid, sturdy choice for those who want a slimmer model without compromising on safety or convenience.

Dimensions: 20.2" (L) x 17" (W) x 25.5" (H) | Weight (without base): 26 lbs. | Height limit: 49" | Weight capacity: 4 to 40 lbs. (rear-facing); 26.5 to 65 (front-facing) | Booster seat: No | One-handed rotation: Yes

Our product tester says:
“It’s a lot slimmer than the other car seat we had before, which is so nice. We have two car seats installed in my husband’s truck, and with the slimmer fit of this car seat, they both fit very well. [] I think maybe we need two of these!”

Best infant rotating car seat

What We Love
  • Weighs just 8.6 lbs.
  • Built-in lights and sounds to calm baby
  • SensorSafe technology alerts parents to potential safety issues
  • Designed to be used with the Evenflo Shyft Intuiti+ travel system
Things To Consider
  • Only rotates 180 degrees
  • Material quality didn’t match the high-end technology, according to our tester
  • 32" height limitation

There are only a handful of rotating car seats on the market exclusively designed for infants, and we’ve tested three of them. The Evenflo Revolve180 LiteMax NXT with SensorySoothe stood out as the easiest to install and most secure out of those we considered, earning it a Best of The Bump award for best infant rotating car seat. Our tester, Shelby, mom of a 6-month-old, was a big fan of how seamless the swivel feature was. “It glides easily and very smoothly with the use of one hand, so much so that my daughter didn’t wake up when I rotated her while she was napping,” she tells us, which we’re sure any new parent would be happy to hear. To turn this model, all you have to do is push one of the side buttons, swivel it to your liking, and you’re good to go.

Image: Shelby G.

One of the benefits of an infant car seat is its lightweight portability—and this rotating seat lives up to that promise. At just 8.6 pounds this car seat is incredibly lightweight. According to Shleby, “This car seat feels weightless compared to other car seats I have owned. I literally feel like I’m carrying just the weight of my daughter.” To make it even easier to move baby from place to place, the Evenflo Revolve180 is designed to be used with the Evenflo Shyft Intuiti+ travel system stroller, and the two can be purchased together or separately. The car seat clips onto the frame in seconds, and when your child outgrows it, you can use the included forward-facing toddler seat on the stroller.

Families of newborns and infants will also appreciate the safety features on this seat. The Evenflo Revolve180 LiteMax has a five-point harness equipped with SensorSafe Technology to alert you (via an app on your phone) when baby is in unsafe conditions, such as if the chest clip becomes unbuckled unexpectedly or if your child is left unattended. “This car seat’s safety features are top notch and bring a lot of peace of mind, which is comforting as a parent,” Shleby shares. It’s also compatible with Evenflo’s adjustable SafeZone Load Leg accessory to further stabilize the seat by grounding to the vehicle’s floor.

A truly unique and infant-friendly feature of this infant rotating car seat is the SensorySoothe system, a dynamic sensory bar that’s built into the underside of the car seat handle. It offers 20 light and sound options that can be customized via the three buttons on the handle’s side or via an app. This feature can be used to calm and entertain baby on the go, and in Shelby’s experience, it worked well for her 6-month-old. “I love that the SensorySoothe had white noise so that I don’t have to carry around a sound machine. My daughter really liked watching the lights change with the music setting,” she says. Something to consider is that the system requires batteries, and Shelby told us she needed replacements midway through a car journey with her little one, which wasn’t ideal. If you decide to go with this seat, you may want to have some backup batteries in your car just in case.

Unlike other models on our list, the Evenflo Revolve180 seat only swivels 180 degrees and can only be used in the rear-facing position. Likewise, it’s only suitable for infants up to 30 pounds and has a 32-inch height limit. While it can’t be used through toddlerhood, this rotating car seat offers new parents ease and convenience, which many say is well worth it. In Shelby’s words: “I would definitely recommend this infant car seat to others, and I would even personally purchase it for others.”

Our product tester says:
“The SensorSafe technology gives peace of mind to new and seasoned parents and the LATCH system feels safe and secure. The SenorySoothe technology is both a cool and useful feature that entertained and soothed my daughter. I also love that I was able to easily control everything from an app, and the app was straightforward. The car seat is extremely lightweight, and the rotating feature makes it easy to get my daughter in and out of the car. ”

What to Consider When Buying a Rotating Car Seat

Choosing the right car seat for your child can be challenging, and different types come with benefits and drawbacks. To streamline your search, here are some factors to consider before deciding on a swivel car seat:

  • Degree of rotation. According to Dilts, “it’s worth noting that some rotating seats rotate for all modes of use (360 degrees), while others can only rotate in the rear-facing position (180 degrees).” The majority of the models we feature turn 360 degrees, as we found that this is often more convenient for families—especially those with kids at multiple stages. For example, if a grandparent is taking care of grandkids of different ages throughout the week, they can use the same seat for forward- and rear-facing.
  • Ease of rotation. Regardless of which degree of rotation you choose, the best rotating car seats have a smooth swivel mechanism, and some can even be operated with one hand. Together, these features make it significantly easier to put your child in their seat and buckle them in.
  • Size. Rotating car seats tend to be slightly larger than traditional models, as the swivel mechanism adds an extra component to the base. Because of this, it’s important to factor in the size of your vehicle and the placement of the seat. “It’s essential to ensure that the car seat fits well without compromising space for other passengers or the driver’s comfort,” explains Dilts. “This may mean the car seat should not be placed behind the driver’s seat if the driver needs more room to recline.” Additionally, given that the car seat is designed to swing outward for easy access, Sagan says that bulky rotating car seats are most likely unusable for families that need a three-across car seat configuration. Be sure to check the measurements of the model you have your eye on and the seats in your car before purchasing to make sure everything will fit.
  • Weight: With additional features comes extra weight, so rotating car seats tend to be heavier than standard models. “As rotating car seats tend to weigh more than other types of seats, it’s recommended to choose a rotating car seat that offers an excellent installation with the use of your vehicle’s seatbelt. This is because LATCH anchors have weight limits, whereas seatbelts do not,” explains Dilts.
  • Price. Rotating car seats are relatively new to the US market and are equipped with state-of-the-art technology. As with any new innovation, this comes with a hefty price tag. The swivel car seats featured in this article start at just under $300 and go up to around $750, but many families say they’re worth it because of the convenience and longevity some models offer.
  • Ease of use. As convenient as rotating car seats inherently are, some offer extra features to make the experience even more seamless. This could include “an easy-to-read indicator that shows the seat is locked in the correct position or properly secured to the base,” Phillips-Walker says.
  • Longevity. Swivel car seats are typically convertible and can be set up in a rear-facing or forward-facing position, meaning you can use them from day one well into childhood. Sagan notes that rotating car seats often have “a shorter lifespan of use due to a lower maximum weight and height limits compared to non-rotating forward-facing five-point harness car seats.” However, if you’re looking for something that will last for years to come, there are options that transition into booster seats down the line, and others that have higher-than-average weight and height limits.

Recent updates to car seat safety standards

In June 2022, the NHSTA introduced a federal standard, often referred to as the FMVSS No. 213a, focused on side-impact safety in all car seats. This will require car seat manufacturers to test their products in more varied crash scenarios, including side-impact (or T-bone) collisions. The tests will be more comprehensive and use updated equipment to produce as realistic results as possible. Because of this, we may see changes in the structural integrity and energy absorption capabilities of car seats in the future. These updates will aim to increase the likelihood of the seat remaining intact and more effectively dispersing crash forces away from the child in the event of an accident.

The FMVSS No. 213a standard has a compliance date of June 30, 2025, so all car seats manufactured after this date will undergo the new side-impact test procedures as outlined in the report. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll have to purchase a new car seat on this date. If your current car seat is still within its expiration date, hasn’t been in a crash and is aligned with current safety guidelines, it’s still considered safe and legal to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a rotating car seat?

A rotating car seat—also known as a swivel car seat—has a fixed base and a seat that twists to face the car door and then back to its rear- or forward-facing position. This innovative swivel feature gives parents easy access to their child, as they can strap a baby or toddler in and remove them from the seat without leaning far inside the car. Some models also let you transition the car seat from rear-facing mode to a forward-facing position with the press of a button (no re-installation necessary). Rotating models offer many of the same features as traditional convertible car seats, and are installed using a LATCH base system or a seat belt path.

Are rotating car seats safe?

“Rotating car seats are safe in the sense that every seat in the United States must meet the same federal safety standards,” says Phillips-Walker. “Thus, if it is on the market, it passed the government’s mandated crash test.” Dilts agrees and says that “rotating car seats are required to adhere to the same rigorous safety standards and federal regulations as all car seats. This ensures they provide a foundational level of safety and protection for child passengers, as set by the NHTSA.” So, as long as it’s installed correctly—and is suitable for your child’s age and weight—yes, rotating car seats are safe to use.

To ensure your rotating car seat is set up and used as safely as possible, Phillips-Walker offers several tips to consider. As with any other car seat, it’s best to keep your child in the rear-facing position for as long as possible. “In fact, it’s best to max out the rear-facing position height and weight limits as this is the safest position,” she says. Likewise, remember that car seats that swivel should only be in the sideways position when getting your kiddo in and out of your car. “Never ride with a child sideways in a rotating car seat," advises Phillips-Walker. For safety reasons, you should never use the rotating car seat’s shell without the base. Phillips-Walker reminds parents to “always make sure the seat is locked in place in the forward- or rear-facing positions prior to the car moving.”
