Fun Facts About February Birthday Babies
Cupid’s firing up his bow and arrow just in time to celebrate your February birthday baby! It may be a chilly month, but Valentine’s Day gives it a warm, loving glow—and whether you’re expecting in February or already have a February baby, it’s the perfect time to celebrate your adoration. “February is all about friendship, laughter and heart-filled fun—so lean into the month of love!” says Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite.
The frigid February temps certainly call for taking the party inside—thankfully, there are many lovely indoor celebration options. Kylie Y., mom of two in Columbus, Ohio, suggests a Frozen birthday party theme, like “FOUR the First Time in Forever.” “So many little ones love that movie, and it perfectly aligns with a February birthday,” she says.

The February Zodiac signs are Aquarius and Pisces: the water-bearer and the fish. Does your February birthday baby have an Aquarian’s creativity or a Piscean’s empathy? Read on to find out.
Aquarius
Babies born between January 20 and February 18 are Aquarians. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says Aquarius babies, symbolized by a water-bearer or a person pouring water from a pitcher, are known for their creativity, independence and forward-thinking. “They’re free-spirited, original and never quite fit the mold,” says Danielle Rothschild, an astrologer and owner of Little Mystic School, an astrology resource for parents. “They’re the kids rewriting the rules of a board game, asking why bedtime is even a thing or coming up with observations that’ll leave you laughing and scratching your head at the same time.”
Pisces
Babies born between February 19 and March 20 are Pisceans. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Pisces babies, symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, are known for their intuition, empathy and adaptability. “Pisces children are dreamers with big imaginations and huge hearts. They feel it all and pick up on the moods of everyone around them,” says Rothschild. “They’ll try to rescue every stray cat, hand over their snack without a second thought and be a puddle of tears during a Disney movie. Parenting a Pisces means cheering on their creativity while also helping them stay grounded.”
The primary February birth flower is the violet and its secondary birth flower is the primrose, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Violets are heart-shaped and many are violet in color (of course), as well as blue, yellow, white and cream. They’re resilient flowers that represent strength and faithfulness. Primroses are cheery flowers that symbolize youth and renewal. Although they come in many colors, all primroses boast five petals and a bright yellow center.
The February birthstone is an amethyst. According to the Gemological Institute of America, the amethyst is the purple variety of quartz. The gemstone has been a royal favorite for centuries and has historically been thought to bring strength and wit to the wearer. Today, the most significant sources of amethyst are found in Africa and South America.
According to an analysis of births in the US from 1994 to 2014, February is the eighth most common birthday month, with 10,981 average daily births. The most popular February birthday is February 14, with 11,686 average daily births—those lucky Valentine’s Day babies and their mamas get to celebrate with flowers and chocolates! The least popular birthday in February is February 29, with 10,512 average daily births: This makes sense since it’s a leap day, which only comes around every four years.

Studies suggest that being born in February may affect things like disease risk and adult height. Also, some lucky February babies get to be born during an unusual lunar occurrence. Check out the details below.
February birthdays are linked to lower disease risk
A large 2015 study using decades of health records found that birth month may shape lifelong health risks. Babies born in February showed a lower risk for many health conditions, including cardiovascular disease, compared to those born in other months. Researchers believe these differing health outcomes may be explained by seasonal factors like vitamin D exposure during pregnancy.
February babies may be born during a “black moon” month
February is the only month that has fewer days than the lunar cycle, which is just over 29 days long. This means that roughly every 19 years, there’s a February with no full moon. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, this is called a “black moon.” So some lucky February babies get to be born during this rare and fun lunar occurrence. The next “black moon” will happen in February 2033!
February babies tend to be smaller than summer babies
A 2015 study found that babies born in winter (December through February) tend to have a lower birth weight, hit puberty a bit earlier and remain shorter in adulthood than summer babies. The researchers hypothesized that seasonal environmental factors, like prenatal vitamin D exposure, could explain these growth differences.
February’s dreary weather can make party-planning a challenge, but with a little creativity, you can set the stage for unforgettable fun. “I’m in California, and February’s usually pretty rainy, so we’ve had to come up with fun indoor ideas,” says Elizabeth P., mom of two in San Jose, California. “One year, we did a Mario theme with a ‘drive-in’ movie. Each attendee decorated their box car, and all enjoyed pizza in their cars while watching The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Pollock agrees that a little creativity goes a long way: “We know winter birthdays can get a bad rap, but there’s no shortage of ways to make them feel warm and unique,” she says. She suggests birthday themes like “Hearts and Crafts,” for a glitter-filled Valentine’s Day fusion, or “Game On,” a retro arcade theme that brings play indoors.
A February birthday may happen during mittens and sniffles weather, but it can also be full of love and optimism. It’s a forward-looking month that marks the end of winter, the promise of spring around the corner—and your beloved little one’s birthday. What’s not to love?
