Fun Facts About March Birthday Babies
March is a month of singing birds, blooming flowers and people eagerly emerging from winter hibernation. It’s a moment of rebirth, so it’s a beautiful time to bring baby into the world—and to celebrate their March birthday in style. “We’re seeing that March birthdays often carry an extra dose of energy and creativity, which is likely because they mark the start of spring,” says Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite.
A March birthday gathering is sure to be full of springtime fun, no matter how your child likes to celebrate. Andria O., mom of three in Bellingham, Washington, says her two March-born sons—one a Pisces and one an Aries—match their Zodiac traits to a tee. Her Pisces son prefers intimate, “play-date” birthday parties, and her Aries son “loves a crowd and will naturally lead them into an activity, usually outdoors.” If you’re wondering how to celebrate your March baby or if their vibes match astrology’s predictions, we’ve got you covered. Below, we dive into March birthdays, including the March birthstone, March birth flower and more fun facts.
The March Zodiac signs are Pisces and Aries—the fish and the ram. Does your March-born have a Piscean’s empathy or an Arien’s courageousness? Read on to find out.
Pisces
Babies born between February 19 and March 20 are Pisceans. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Pisceans, symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, are known for their intuition, empathy and adaptability. “Pisces kids feel everything. They’ll notice when a classmate is sad, and lose themselves for hours in a drawing or a story,” says Danielle Rothschild, an astrologer and owner of Little Mystic School, an astrology resource for parents. “They need parents who celebrate their imagination, but who also help them learn how to stay grounded when they have big emotions.”
Aries
Children born between March 21 and April 20 are Aries babies. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Ariens, symbolized by a ram, are thought to be courageous, independent and up for a challenge. “Aries kids are brave, fiery and overflowing with energy. They’re the ones wanting to be first at everything, or insisting on picking their own outfit, even if it’s pajamas with rain boots,” says Rothschild. “They do best when they have space to run, jump and climb, along with chances to make their own choices and feel in charge.”
According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the main March birth flower is the daffodil, and the secondary March birth flower is the jonquil. Daffodils are bright-yellow flowers with six petals and a trumpet-shaped center. They’re good-news flowers that let us know spring has arrived. Jonquils are from the daffodil family and are similar in appearance, but smell sweeter and have shorter trumpets. Both March birth flowers symbolize renewal and joy.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, there are two March birthstones: aquamarine and bloodstone, both of which are thought to have protective properties. Aquamarine is a green-blue stone that is known for its clarity, symbolizing purity of spirit and soul. Bloodstones, also known as heliotropes, are dark green stones with red iron oxide spots. They are thought to bring health and strength to the wearer.
According to an analysis of births in the US from 1994 to 2014, March is the ninth most common birthday month, with 10,979 average daily births. The most popular birthday in March is March 21, with 11,233 average daily births, and the least popular birthday in March is March 13, with 10,697.
March babies are lucky to share a birth month with musical powerhouses like Céline Dion, Lady Gaga and Mariah Carey! Famous March birthdays include:
- Justin Bieber (March 1)
- Jessica Biel (March 3)
- Eva Longoria (March 15)
- Queen Latifah (March 18)
- Reese Witherspoon (March 22)
- Sarah Jessica Parker (March 25)
- Mariah Carey (March 27)
- Lady Gaga (March 28)
- Céline Dion (March 30)
Studies suggest that being born in March may affect disease risk or possibly even career outcomes. Below are all of the details.
People born in March are at a lower risk for certain diseases
A 2015 study analyzing decades of health records found that birth month may impact lifetime disease risk. In the study, babies born in March showed a lower risk for respiratory and neurological conditions. Researchers believe that seasonal environmental factors, like prenatal vitamin D exposure levels, may explain these differing health outcomes.
March babies may have a career advantage
A 2012 study compared the birth dates of 375 CEOs and found that the largest number of them were born in March and April, whereas the fewest were born in June and July. The researchers hypothesized that the “relative age effect,” or the idea that the oldest kids in their class may have an advantage in school and beyond, explained this phenomenon. However, it should be noted that the study used a small, selective sample size and didn’t necessarily control for all relevant factors.
Whether you take your child’s March birthday party outside or celebrate in the “great indoors,” there are plenty of ways to make it a memorable occasion. Pollock says that for March birthdays, parents tend to lean into themes that are “fresh, colorful and aesthetically pleasing enough for social media, from rainbow scavenger hunts to galactic adventures.”
Since the month marks the beginning of spring, incorporating spring flora and fauna can be a beautiful and seasonally appropriate way to jazz up a March birthday party. Pollock suggests other March-related ideas, like a “Lucky Charm” party for St. Patrick’s Day-themed fun or a “Her Day to Sparkle” unicorn-themed party to incorporate the bright colors and sparkle of early spring.
Like the transition from winter to spring, a March birthday is something lively and hopeful to celebrate. As you march into March with baby, enjoy the snuggles—and (hopefully) some stroller-ready weather.
