Fun Facts About October Birthday Babies
October is a whole vibe: the cooler weather, the Halloween excitement, the pumpkin spice lattes—what’s not to love? When an October baby enters the chat, things get even better. “My clients appreciate the cooler month of October, as they can walk outside comfortably compared to the summer months,” says Kristin Revere, CED, a certified birth, postpartum and infant care doula and the founder of Gold Coast Doulas in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “They can also still open windows to reduce germ concerns for baby.”
The crisp air and beautiful scenery make October a perfect month for welcoming baby into the world—and celebrating their birthday in style. “My [October-born] daughter loves the fall, so celebrating her birthday outdoors is extra special. We usually go to a corn maze nearby,” says Yvette H., a mom of three in Erie, Colorado.
October birthday babies also enjoy bonus fall-birthday perks. According to research, they might grow up to be among the strongest kids in class and may even have a longevity advantage. Read on for more fun facts about October birthdays and ideas for celebrating your autumn baby.
October’s Zodiac signs are Libra and Scorpio—the scales and the scorpion. Does your October baby have Libra’s chill or Scorpio’s intensity? Read on to find out.
Libra
Babies born between September 23 and October 22 are Libras. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says Libras, symbolized by balanced scales, are drawn to harmony, justice and aesthetic beauty. “Ruled by Venus, the planet of beauty and love, they’re the kids who pick outfits like they’re styling a photo shoot, try to be friends with everyone on the playground and might already have strong opinions on which sippy cup looks better,” says Danielle Rothschild, an astrologer and owner of Little Mystic School, an astrology resource for parents. “Libras thrive in calm, friendly environments and do best when they learn early that it’s okay to set boundaries and that ‘no’ is just as important as the word ‘yes.’”
Scorpio
Babies born between October 23 and November 21 are Scorpios. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, Scorpios, which are represented by—you guessed it—a scorpion, are thought to be passionate, loyal and charming. “Scorpios are known for their depth and focus, even in their tiniest years,” says Rothschild. “They’re curious, determined and often have a quiet intensity about them. They might surprise you with the kinds of questions they ask or how protective they are of their favorite people. Scorpios love a challenge, and once they decide to figure something out, there’s no stopping them.” Yvette H. says, “My girl has a birthday on October 30. She’s such a Scorpio in the sense that she’s very insightful. We always say she’s wise beyond her years.”
October’s birth flowers are a beautiful representation of the fall season. According to The Old Farmer’s Almanac, the primary October birth flower is the marigold, and the secondary birth flower is the cosmos. Marigolds are vibrant, layered flowers that come in yellows, oranges and reds. They’re known to symbolize joy and passion. Cosmos are warm-toned flowers in the same family as marigolds, and they represent harmony and balance.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, October has two birthstones: opal and tourmaline. Opal is a pearly stone with dazzling rainbow bursts that shift in appearance when the stone is rotated. In ancient Europe, opals were thought to represent purity, hope and truth. Tourmaline is newer to the October birthstone scene, and it comes in many colors—pinks, reds, greens and blues, to name a few. Some tourmaline color varieties are thought to have healing properties.
According to an analysis of births in the US from 1994 to 2014, October is the fifth most common birthday month, with 11,204 average daily births. The most popular birthday in October is October 1, with 11,771 average daily births, and the least popular birthday in October is October 31, with 10,030.

There are quite a few perks to being an October baby. For starters, October happens to be one of the most popular birth months for US presidents. Read on to find out more.
October is a leading month for US presidential birthdays
October is tied with November as the top birth month for US presidents. Does that mean your October baby will grow up to become Commander in Chief? The coincidence can’t hurt! Past presidents with October birthdays are:
- John Adams (October 30, 1735)
- Rutherford B. Hayes (October 4, 1822)
- Chester A. Arthur (October 5, 1829)
- Theodore Roosevelt (October 27, 1858)
- Dwight D. Eisenhower (October 14, 1890)
- Jimmy Carter (October 1, 1924)
October birthday babies tend to be strong
A 2014 study on physical ability by birth month found that October-born children were stronger than all of their classmates except those born in September and November, even when height, weight and BMI were similar across birth months. In other words, fall-born kids—especially those born in October and November—were stronger and fitter despite not necessarily being the tallest, heaviest or even oldest in their class. Scientists believe this suggests that these advantages are independent of relative age and that other factors, like vitamin D exposure in the womb, may play a role.
Babies born in October (and other fall months) may have longevity on their side
A large sibling-based study found that babies born in the fall—September through November—were more likely to live to 100 compared to those born in other months. The study, which looked at over 1,500 US centenarians, found the longevity link held up even when controlling for family background and environment. Scientists believe early-life exposure to seasonal infections, nutrition and sunlight may all play a role.
October’s fiery autumnal colors, cool sweater weather and spiced aromas make ideal ingredients for a birthday get-together. “While October’s known for pumpkins and costumes, it’s also the perfect time for warm indoor gatherings, whimsical outdoor adventures and celebrations that feel just right for fall,” says Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite.
The month of October is crisp and cozy in most parts of the country—but not everywhere! “Since we live in Texas and October’s still hot—it was 99 degrees the day I gave birth last year!—we’re doing a ‘One in the Sun’ party and just having an outdoor party to enjoy the sun,” says Jocelyn D., a mom of one (soon-to-be one-year-old) in Austin, Texas.
For a spooktacular twist, Pollock suggests a “Boo-jama” party: PJs, pumpkins and seasonal treats. “With a mix of sweet and spooky, [this party’s] sure to create memories they’ll carry into next year!” she says.
October birthday babies and their parents are treated to (usually) cool birthday temps and cozy celebrations. For new parents, October births mean skin-to-skin under blankets while sipping apple cider—pure warmth. Take this time to savor the seasonal magic and, most of all, your sweet October baby.
