There’s something magical about watching baby grow into a toddler with their own personality and strong opinions. But when it comes to getting dressed in the morning, those preferences can quickly become a battleground.

It’s an all-too-familiar struggle toddler mom Emma Kay (@emma.kay.brown) shared in a recent post that’s resonated with toddler parents everywhere. Her daughter, Capri, may have a closet full of new summer outfits, comfy onesies and colorful matching sets, but she only has eyes for one thing: princess dresses.

“You want to wear a princess dress again? Capri, can we wear one of the million summer outfits I just bought you like a month ago,” Kay pleads as they look through the closet. Capri replies again that she “just wants the princess dresses.”

Picking out one of the new summer outfits Kay begins the negotiation. “Look at the outfit your grandma got you! This, with the matching shirt, we should take a picture in it and send it to her,” Kay excitedly suggests. Capri considers the pitch, but it’s not until Kay adds, “Can we just put it on, take the picture and then take it off?” that Capri lights up: “Oh, that’s a good idea. I would love to wear it, all for you!”

“I know this stage won’t last long but please believe when I say I let her wear the princess dresses 6/7 days a week,” Kay captioned the post. The comment section quickly filled with solidarity and advice from fellow parents.

“‘Oh, that outfit looks exactly like Princess (insert princess here) workout outfit; beach outfit; brunch outfit, etc. If you wear this you can match her!’ was my go-to when my kid wants only princess nightgowns,” one dad wrote. “All my son wants to wear are those polyester soccer outfits. It’s 100 degrees sir, you need cotton!” a mom added. “You gave birth to a princess and now you’re officially her royal assistant,” joked Dove Beauty.

If your mornings feel like a fashion standoff, you’re far from alone. Check out these tips for teaching toddlers to dress themselves and keep in mind—a little princess dress time never hurt anyone!
