A No-Tears Guide to Teething

Baby’s first teeth are coming in—and he’s not too happy about it. Ease his growing pains (and your stress) with these mom-tested gum soothers and teething tips.

In a dream world…

That adorable, gummy smile is replaced with a toothy grin you can’t stop Instagramming, and he barely made a fuss. Baby’s happy as can be throughout the day and, now that he’s sleeping through the night, your evenings are (dare you say it) oh-so-quiet. You have no idea why all of your friends with babies the same age look like they’ve been through hell (not to mention covered in drool and a nasty teething rash).

In reality…

It’s tears from morning til night… You’d give anything to unlock the secret code that will make him feel better. Baby’s taken to boycotting food of any kind, but he’s biting everything else in sight—including you. He’s so confused, frustrated and in pain that he’s at the point of screaming and pulling his hair, and boy, can you relate.

Make this milestone easier

Apply pressure
Offer baby a rubber teether or rub her gums with a clean finger—she’ll find the pressure soothing.

Cool things down
Keep a stockpile of wet washcloths in your refrigerator that he can chew on for numbing relief. You can also chill metal spoons and run them along baby’s gums to lessen discomfort and inflammation.

Consider medication
In most cases, babies older than 6 months can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and low-grade fevers (under 101 degrees) that can result from teething. Speak to your pediatrician to get the okay and the recommended dosage.
