Fun Facts About August Birthday Babies
August may seem like a sleepy month, but with your fiery August birthday baby, it’ll be anything but boring. August birthdays are all about reconnecting with friends after a long summer break—or keeping the summer party going with popsicles and pools. My daughter’s mid-August birthday usually falls right before school starts, so we take the opportunity to throw an epic summer-ending bash.
If you’ve got your own August-born baby or one on the way, you’re in luck: Late-summer kids are vibrant and full of spark. Read on for some fun facts about August birthday babies and how to celebrate their dazzling personalities with pizzazz.
The August Zodiac signs are Leo and Virgo—the bold lion and the nurturing maiden. Does your August baby have Leo fierceness or Virgo thoughtfulness? Let’s find out.
Leo
Leo babies are born between July 23 and August 22, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. The Leo zodiac sign is a lion, representing the purported bold and vibrant personalities of Leos. “Leo’s ruled by the sun, so these children are naturally expressive, creative and courageous,” says Danielle Rothschild, an astrologer and owner of Little Mystic School, an astrology resource for parents. “They crave connection and attention. And like the sun, they shine brightest when they’re seen and celebrated.” My August-born Leo daughter has the Leo vibrance for sure—she’s bursting with light, humor and creativity (and sometimes a little bit of that lion roar).
Virgo
Virgo babies are born between August 23 and September 22, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Virgos, often represented by a maiden carrying a wheat shaft, are said to be meticulous and nurturing. “These kids are curious, thoughtful and tend to notice every little detail,” says Rothschild. “Virgo kids love routine, clear instructions and a calm environment. They feel safest when the world feels orderly and make great little helpers if you let them take the lead.”
The primary August birth flower is a gladiolus, and the month’s secondary birth flower is a poppy, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Gladioli are grouped on tall flower spikes and come in a variety of cheery, warm colors. They represent strength and integrity. Poppies are large flowers known for their vivid, red petals and a black center. They symbolize peace, hope and resilience.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, August-born babies have three birthstones to choose from: peridot, spinel and sardonyx. The peridot is an olive green gem from the mineral olivine, which comes either from lava or, more rarely, meteorites. Spinel gets its name from the Latin “spina” (thorn) and comes in many vibrant hues. Due to their dazzling appearance, red spinels have historically been mistaken for rubies. Finally, the sardonyx is the original August birthstone and is often striped and reddish-orange in appearance. Like June babies, August babies have a pick of birthstones!
According to an analysis of births in the US from 1994 to 2014, August is the second most popular birthday month (after September), with 11,712 average daily births. The most popular birthday in August is August 8, with 12,006 average daily births, and the least popular birthday in August is August 3, with 11,367 average daily births.

Studies have shown that there are some links between birth month and health outcomes. Check out a few interesting facts about August birthday babies below.
August babies may be more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD
Well, not exactly. But a 2018 study found that August-born kids are more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than their older classmates—especially in states where the school age cutoff for kindergarten is September 1. In these areas, August-born kids are nearly a full year younger than their September-born classmates. Scientists theorized that kids with August birthdays may receive ADHD diagnoses at a higher rate because age-appropriate behaviors in younger kids can be mistaken for symptoms of ADHD.
People born in August are less prone to asthma and allergies
According to a 2024 registry-based study analyzing over 74,000 Finnish people, summer-borns (including August babies) have the lowest risk for developing asthma and allergies than babies born in any other season. Scientists theorize that this is due to environmental factors during pregnancy and early life, like increased sunlight, pollen exposure and seasonal infections, which may influence immune system development.
August babies tend to be bigger at birth and taller later on
A 2015 study found that babies born in the summer months (June, July and August) tend to have a higher birth weight, hit puberty a little later and grow taller in adulthood than babies born in other seasons. Researchers think this could be due to higher vitamin D exposure in pregnancy (which supports healthy bone growth from the start).
August is a wonderful month for a “one last summer hurrah”-style get-together. “For my daughter’s August birthday celebrations, we always plan a big pool party. Everyone’s in town because it’s right before back-to-school for us, so we always get a great turnout—lots of friends, food and fun,” says Lauren L., a mom of three in Atlanta.
Late summer is perfect for pool parties or even classic throwback themes, like ice cream socials. “Think sprinkle stations, waffle cone garlands, and guests building their dream sundae (or soda float!),” says Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite. “If you’re looking for non-edible activities, add a ‘decorate your own cone’ craft table and serve scoops in colorful sand pails with tiny shovels.”
August birthday gatherings provide a sweet way to end the summer in style. “August birthdays are peak summer kid magic,” says Pollock. “It’s the perfect time to gather their crew, play outside ’til sunset, and celebrate with something sweet (or splashy).”
