In a nutshell:
Based on feedback from 20 independent product testers, a survey of over 300 members of The Bump community and advice from a baby gear expert and a pediatrician, we chose the Inglesina My Time High Chair as the overall best high chair. This product stood out because it was simple to adjust, encouraged baby to sit at an upright 90-degree position and can be used from birth in its near lie-flat mode. We also chose the Graco Table2Table Premier Fold 7-in-1 High Chair as the overall best convertible high chair due to its easy-to-use multiple configurations and relatively affordable price point.

The best high chairs offer baby a safe place to sit, play and graze as they progress from bottles to bite-sized snacks and, finally, to full meals. But some are more comfortable, stylish and easy to clean and adjust than others. So what qualities do you actually need in a high chair?

According to Rebekah Kimminau, a certified child passenger safety technician and baby gear expert, “the most important features in a high chair from a safety perspective is how supportive it is and what posture it holds the baby’s body in.” The “90-90-90” position is key for infants—in this position, baby’s hips are flexed at a 90-degree angle, knees are bent at a 90-degree angle and their feet rest on a flat surface with their ankles bent 90 degrees. Kimminau notes that good back support is vital for both safety and enjoyment: “A slouching position can make your baby not enjoy eating as much, or increase the likelihood of choking.”

And of course while safety is paramount, there are also practical day-to-day concerns that you have to consider when picking out the best baby high chair for your family. Many parents are on the hunt for a reliable, functional product that’s also easy to clean—I know from experience that babies are messy eaters! To help you find a high chair that ticks all the boxes and matches your personal style, we’ve spent the past three years putting the most popular options on the market to the ultimate test: mealtimes with 20 different families.

How We Tested and Chose the Best High Chairs

Image: Larissa P., Natalie M., Christina C.

The Bump editors conducted extensive research to identify the 38 leading high chairs on the market. We then created a shortlist of 20 to test. From there:

  • We enlisted the help of 20 families to use and review the baby high chairs in their homes with enthusiastic and fussy eaters through a host of messy meals. With the help of their infants and toddlers, these independent product testers assessed these high chairs for ease of use, positioning of child, safety, ease of cleaning, effectiveness and features, value for money and more.
  • We surveyed 300 members of The Bump community and asked them to rate the high chairs they’ve used with their own kids and comment on their overall experience.
  • We researched what was being said about high chairs in The Bump community forums to learn what parents liked and disliked about specific styles and brands.
  • We interviewed a pediatrician and baby gear consultant to better understand what features parents should look for in a high chair, and what safety features they should keep in mind when using one.
  • We read scientific research and recent law changes regarding high chair safety from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). We also followed advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on infant feeding to ensure the high chairs we’ve recommended meet the latest safety requirements.
  • Because every family’s experience is different, we scoured forums and message boards and read user reviews to find out how these high chairs performed for parents across the country.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

Best High Chairs

Overall best standard high chair

Inglesina My Time High Chair
Image: Pottery Barn Kids
What We Love
  • Easy to use and easy to store
  • Holds baby upright
  • Can be used from birth
  • Stands independently when folded
Things To Consider
  • Five-point harness can be stiff to buckle in, according to tester

Simple to adjust and fold, upright positioning and suitable for use from birth, the Inglesina My Time High Chair stood out for delivering those key features, earning it a Best of The Bump award for the overall best standard high chair. (See all of this year’s Best of The Bump winners.) From the get-go, the chair made our tester Larisa’s life a little easier by taking less than five minutes to assemble. Her family eats at a bar-height table, which would pose a problem for many high chairs. However, thanks to the Inglesina My Time’s four-position height adjustable feature, her 9-month-old was able to join them for meals without any hassle. “If you don’t have a traditional table height, this chair will allow you to still comfortably feed your baby and allow your baby to join you for meals,” Larisa tells us.

Larisa also praised the effective five-point harness and seat design, which helped to secure her little one in the 90-degree position and prevented him from slumping to the side or slouching while eating. “I absolutely love how my baby didn’t lean to the side in this highchair because he has that problem in another we have tried,” she shares. The adjustable foot rest further encouraged her infant to sit upright, which Larisa appreciated. And although the seat depth can’t be modified, which she had concerns about at first, it didn’t prove to be a problem during testing; her child was able to reach all of his food as normal. “The tray position is adjustable and it has two adjustments. We used the closest adjustment for our baby and it allowed for him to comfortably reach his food,” Larisa explains.

Image: Larissa P.

If you have a newborn or young infant, the Inglesina My Time’s seat can be adjusted to a near lie-flat position so baby can join you at the table even before they start on solid food. While most kids start eating solids around six months, Kimminau says it’s never too early to involve them in family meals. “I’m a huge fan of high chairs that have a from-birth option,” she says. “This is because I believe, the earlier you bring a child to the table and involve them in family meals, the more comfortable they will be in that setting in the future.”

Once mealtime is over, the chair is easy to clean. Made from an anti-bacterial, stain-resistant leatherette material, the Inglesina My Time can be wiped down with a sponge. “I didn’t need to clean the straps because the harness covers provided a lot of coverage for our 9-month-old baby. I placed the top tray cover in the dishwasher to clean and it came out like new,” Larisa explains. While this chair has a sleek, neutral design that blends easily with most homes, it’s also simple to fold and store in-between meals. “The overall size of the highchair when in use is comparable to most high chairs that I have used, but since it folds and can be put away it fits perfectly in our smaller city space,” she enthuses. “We have received many compliments from visitors in our home, saying that the highchair looks very comfortable and luxurious, and that our baby has the best seat in the house during dinner!”

Overall best convertible high chair

What We Love
  • Transitional and effective 7-in-1 design
  • Turns into a toddler table
  • Good level of adjustability
  • Good value for long-lasting chair
Things To Consider
  • Some parents say the tray is tricky to attach
  • Large size

While many high chairs promise to grow with your baby, Graco Table2Table Premier Fold 7-in-1 High Chair can offer your child different seating options for up to six years. The versatile design has seven unique settings, including a traditional high chair and booster seat, eventually becoming a toddler-sized table. Brands love to tout as many modes as possible these days, but we found the Table2Table offers truly distinct configurations that are useful and easy to use—no marketing ploys here. “It transforms into multiple configurations and it does so with ease and absolutely no tools needed,” says our tester Brooke. “Both my 10-month-old and my almost 4-year-old were able to use the seat comfortably.” For this reason and more, it won our Best of The Bump award for the overall best convertible high chair.

Image: Brooke E.

While a convertible high chair like this might sound complex, Brooke reported it took less than 10 minutes to assemble. Once it was up and running, she also found the high chair to be incredibly straightforward and safe. “The harness is both easy to use and very secure, giving me peace of mind when stepping away,” she told us. In high chair mode, it offers five seat height options, three footrest positions and three recline positions, so you can modify it as your child grows. Additionally, the tray can be removed with one hand and stored on the back or folded up with the rest of the chair, and then go straight into the dishwasher for simple cleaning. Speaking of cleanup, Brooke reported the Graco Table2Table was a breeze to wipe with a wet rag. “Keeping the tray clean is pretty easy,” she said, “there are some crevices that food finds its way to on the actual chair but they are easy to get to and clean!”

This convertible high chair runs on the larger side, so it may look a little clunky in some homes. However, it does fold easily for compact storage and Brooke noted the neutral colors would likely match most color schemes. According to her, “the high chair sits in our dining room at all times and fits right in.” Sporting a traditional padded style rather than the sleek lines of some contemporary models, the Table2Table Premier Fold 7-in-1 High Chair is a solid option, especially for homes with multiple kids. In Brooke’s words: “You will never have to buy another chair for your child (or an art/kiddie table); this literally has it all. The quality is fabulous and the durability is unmatched.”

Dimensions: 24" (L) x 27" (W) x 44" (H) | Weight: 25 lbs. | Age range: Infant to 6 years | Weight capacity: 40 to 60 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes

Our product tester says:
“The best part about the Graco Table2Table Premier Fold 7-in-1 High Chair is its never ending features. Not only is it a high chair but it also turns into a booster seat and toddler table and chair. For a home with multiple aged children, this high chair is perfect for accommodating all ages.”

IKEA Antilop High Chair
Image: IKEA
Buying Options
IKEA |$19.99
What We Love
  • Incredibly affordable
  • Easy assembly
  • Simple design is easy to clean
Things To Consider
  • No adjustable height
  • Doesn’t fold
  • No footrest

The IKEA’s Antilop high chair costs less than your most recent grocery run—but it’ll last a lot longer. The Swedish retailer is well-known for their affordable yet stylish furniture, and the Antilop, our Best of The Bump winner for best affordable high chair for the second year in a row, is no exception. Whereas most high chairs on the market hover around $200 and up, this pick rings in at a mere $20. And at a time where costs are rising across the board, this chair’s price has actually dropped in the past year.

This perennial favorite is a solid, no-frills high chair. You can’t adjust or fold this one, and it doesn’t convert into multiple modes. But if you’re looking for a basic option that’s easy to use (and easy on your wallet), the Antilop really shines. Unlike other IKEA pieces, this high chair requires very little assembly and no tools at all; everything just snaps together. “Setting up the chair was quite easy. It came in four parts and took about five minutes,” reports our tester Ariana. The chair boasts extra-large leg holes, which made it comfortable for her 9-month-old to sit in and easy for her to get him in and out of the chair. (And rest assured, that extra wiggle room won’t be a point of worry: “The three-point harness secured my baby very well,” she said, adding that the high chair felt “very stable.”)

Image: Ariana B.

When it comes time to clean up, the Antilop is a winner as well. “Unlike many other chairs, this high chair has a very simple design,” says Ariana. “No crevices, which makes it simple to wipe down.” Members of The Bump community forums agree that it’s a breeze to sanitize. One parent in The Bump forums, muppet.fan, even says, “We used to pull it outside and just hose it down after super messy meals!"

To top it all off, Ariana predicts the Antilop will continue saving her money, since it’ll accommodate her child well into toddlerhood despite its budget price. “The high chair is definitely suitable for older children,” she says. “The harness can be adjusted [and there’s a] large gap between the tray. My guess is the chair will last a while as my son gets older.” And should you decide to purchase extras for other children or visitors, you’ll quickly learn that these chairs stack easily, adding to their allure. It’s no wonder that the IKEA Antilop has been beloved by parents for years.

Dimensions: 22" (L) x 22" (W) x 33.4" (H) | Weight: 8 lbs. | Age range: 6 months to 3 years | Weight capacity: 33 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: No

Our product tester says:
“The IKEA high chair is worth the price, I believe the low price point is perfect because it makes it affordable for parents, great quality and does what it needs to do as a high chair.”

Our community says:

It’s under $30, is relatively small compared to other full-sized high chairs and is super easy to clean. The legs come apart, so it’s easy to store. – doraleigh35, The Bump forum member

I love the cost, style and ease of cleaning of the IKEA high chair. – Taylor, mom and The Bump survey respondent

Best easy-to-clean high chair

Mockingbird High Chair
Image: Mockingbird
Buying Options
Mockingbird|$249
What We Love
  • Incredibly easy to clean, according to our tester
  • Silicone-coated, machine-washable straps
  • Sleek design with minimal crevices
  • Clip to hold straps when putting child in
  • Transitions into a kids’ chair
Things To Consider
  • Some find it tricky to lift big babies out

Cleaning high chairs is among the biggest headaches for parents, myself included. Mealtime debris gets stuck on fast and rarely comes out easily, especially with soft, baby-friendly foods. If you’re looking to eliminate some of this hassle, Mockingbird, our Best of The Bump winner for the best easy-to-clean high chair, has you covered. Our tester Natalie called the Mockingbird High Chair “one of the easiest high chairs I’ve ever cleaned.” This is in part because the silicone-coated straps can be wiped absolutely clean after mealtime, while the chair’s sleek design leaves few nooks or crannies for crumbs to fall into, making it a piece of cake to wipe down with a wet rag. “There aren’t any hard-to-reach spots, which I really appreciate—I’ve been able to clean every area with no trouble at all,” enthuses Natalie, adding that “there’s been no sign of mold or any places where moisture could get trapped. Overall, it’s low-maintenance and stays looking fresh.” It also comes with a pop-off, dishwasher-safe tray.

Image: Natalie M.

Natalie found the Mockingbird enabled her baby to sit in a comfortable position, reporting that it “gave him a good sense of control during mealtime. The seating position really seemed to help him pick up food from the tray more easily, and he was able to guide a pre-filled spoon to his mouth with less effort.” The large, adjustable footrest also helped with positioning. “He could rest his feet flat on the footrest, which I think added to his stability and comfort.” There have been comments in forums that it can be difficult to lift larger babies out of the seat due to the design of the leg holes, and this was something that Natalie also experienced on occasion. However, one forum mom shared that if you stand behind the chair when lifting your child out, it’s much easier.

Once your child has moved past the high chair stage, the Mockingbird converts into a child’s chair and is designed to work for children up to 150 pounds. According to Natalie, “transforming [this high chair] was fairly simple—removing the baby seat was easy, and adjusting the seat by unlatching it and sliding it up or down was straightforward.” Her 5-year-old loved the climb-in feature, and Natalie found the adjustable foot rest great for the baby phase. Whether her family was using it as a high chair or a regular chair, she had no safety concerns. “The chair feels very sturdy, and they seemed comfortable and safe in it,” Natalie reports, adding that the magnetic harness was “impressively strong.”

While the chair height isn’t adjustable for the baby stage, there are four height options when it's set up as a regular chair for toddlers and kids. Despite this, the high chair fit perfectly at Natalie’s dining table height, so it didn’t cause any issues during testing and she appreciated the convertible design. “The adjustability is especially useful since every child is different, and it’s nice to have a product that can grow with them and serve multiple purposes,” she praises.

Dimensions: 24" (L) x 16.5" (W) x 35.5" (H) | Weight: 16.5 lbs. | Age range: 6+ months | Weight capacity: 35 lbs. (high chair); 150 lbs. (child chair) | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes

Our product tester says:
“The ease of cleaning is a big plus—it gives me peace of mind knowing I won’t be constantly finding hidden crumbs like I have with other highchairs. Despite lots of messy meals (including plenty of sweet potatoes!), there are no stains so far. It’s a practical, all-in-one solution that truly grows with your child.”

Best adjustable high chair

Momcozy DinerPal High Chair
Image: Momcozy
What We Love
  • Seven seat positions and two depths
  • Seven footrest heights
  • Converts to learning tower as well as kids’ chair
  • Dedicated carry handle
Things To Consider
  • Harness is stiff to lock and unlock, according to our tester

With an impressive seven seat heights, two seat depths and a seven-position footrest, the Momcozy DinerPal High Chair offers more effective flexibility than any other chair on our list, earning it our best adjustable high chair award. Our tester Christina, a mom of 13 kids, was a big fan of this. “I found this feature quite useful for adapting the chair to various situations, whether feeding at the dining table or sitting next to the kitchen island,” she shared. The tray depth can also be set in two different positions, so it’s easier for baby to reach their food at every stage. Christina appreciated this extra feature and even says it helped cut down on messes. “The tray can be moved forward or backward to give your baby more room as they grow, and it’s very easy to slide and lock into place. This has made it more comfortable for my baby and helped keep mealtimes mess-free,” she tells us.

Image: Christina C.

Christina tested the Momcozy DinerPal High Chair with her 9-month-old, her toddler and her preschooler, and appreciated all the convertible modes offered, from a standard high chair to a toddler and adult chair. In particular, she noted that the learning tower mode was a great addition to her family’s kitchen routine; “my toddler loves being up at counter height to help with simple tasks like stirring or washing veggies.” Christina also found Momcozy’s chair mode was great for “independent play and snack time.”

Image: Christina C.

Another design detail that stood out during testing was the seat’s footrest, which can be quickly repositioned to suit your child’s height, according to Christina. “This is especially helpful for promoting good posture and making the chair more comfortable for longer periods,” she says. (It’s also good for maintaining the 90-90-90 position!) Christina also found it easy to lift her 9-month-old in and out. “Getting my baby into the highchair is simple; the tray needs to be removed first, but it slides off smoothly with one hand, which is very convenient when holding a squirmy baby. The leg space is ample, so I had no trouble getting my baby’s legs into position without needing to twist or angle them awkwardly.” She reports that lifting her baby out was “just as easy”.

Conveniently, this model is also easy to clean. It has a flat, wipeable surface with few nooks and crannies to trap food debris and it comes with a machine-washable harness. The bottom line: “The height adjustability and comfortable seating make mealtime easier for both parents and children,” she praised.

Dimensions: 22.1" (L) x 28" (W) x 31.3" (H) | Weight: | Age range: 6 months to 3 years (high chair); 3+ years (child and adult chair) | Weight capacity: 308 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes

Our product tester says:
"The Momcozy highchair offers solid adjustability that really adds to its long-term usability. The height is adjustable to several levels, allowing it to work well at different tables or counters. It’s been very effective in supporting safe, comfortable, and successful mealtimes.”

Best slim high chair

Graco EveryStep Slim 6-in-1 Highchair
Image: Graco
What We Love
  • Slim frame
  • Compact self-standing fold
  • Converts to booster seat and step stool
  • 4 seat height positions
Things To Consider
  • Young babies may not be able to reach footrest

When you’re living in tight quarters, a bulky high chair that’s permanently planted in your kitchen isn’t going to work. But the Graco Everystep Slim 6-in-1 Highchair will. At 17 inches wide, it’s notably narrower than most other options on the market, letting you maneuver around it more easily. This foldable high chair can also be stored when not in use, freeing up your precious space. Our tester Stormie, a mom of two, loved the “sleek and not-bulky design” that doesn’t take up much room, securing its title as the Best of The Bump winner for the best slim high chair.

This versatile seat can be used in six different modes, depending on your child’s age and stage. So instead of filling your house with several products, you can get one multi-use high chair that saves on space without sacrificing function. In my opinion—as someone whose house is currently overflowing with baby products my daughter has outgrown—the more supplies you can reuse, the better. Over the months (and years), you can count on the Graco EveryStep to transition from a baby high chair to a toddler booster seat and, finally, into a step stool for bigger kids. (Pro tip: You can use the booster and step stools separately, which is a big plus for those with multiple young children.) “All six formats that this high chair has were comfortable, easy to use and quick to set up,” Stormie said. “I feel this could be used in different ways for all ages of young children. My 5-year-old loved the step stool."

Image: Stormie S.

Stormie also gave the Graco Everystep top marks for ease of use and cleaning. Between the dishwasher-safe tray and wipeable seat padding, Stormie found it “simple and easy to clean.” It took Stormie about five minutes to set up, and proved easy to get her baby in and out of the seat. “This highchair was very simple to use,” she enthuses. “It was very easy to put my baby in the chair. My baby sat comfortably and was smiling away! The height adjustment was also very easy to use, and I liked this feature a lot!”

Dimensions: 28" (L) x 17" (W) x 40" (H) | Weight: 18 lbs. | Age range: 6 months to 2 years (high chair) | Weight capacity: 40 lbs. (high chair); 60 lbs. (with the toddler booster seat) | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes

Our product tester says:
“It doesn’t take up much space. [] There are six different formats, and I could see myself using this until my oldest turns 7. I would definitely buy this product for myself and recommend it to other moms to put on their baby registries.”

Best folding high chair

Baby Jogger City Bistro High Chair
Image: Pottery Barn Kids
What We Love
  • Easy to fold up and store
  • Reduces footprint by 80% when folded
  • Tray clips onto the back for simple storage
  • Seat offers calf support for baby
Things To Consider
  • A bit tricky to clean, according to some
  • Tray can be hard to hook on

When folded, the Baby Jogger City Bistro Chair reduces its footprint by an impressive 80 percent. This leaves you with ample extra floor space, and a high chair that can fit into almost any storage space (or even in the trunk of your car) with ease. According to our tester Germany, mom of a 7-month-old, it’s “very compact and easy to store once it is folded up.” While some folding chairs can be tricky to use, Baby Jogger takes just two steps to fold up and, when folded, it stands independently. Even better, Germany says the chair took less than 2 minutes to set up. She also notes that she “barely used the instructions” during assembly and use and, when she did, they were straightforward.

Image: Germany O.

During testing, the Baby Jogger was easy to adjust to Germany’s preferred level, thanks to its four height positions. “I love that you can easily move the height of the chair according to [your] table height,” she says. “Since we can adjust the height of the chair, [our daughter] is able to be eye level with us at the dinner table.” Another feature she appreciated was the seat’s calf support, which helped her 7-month-old sit in a comfortable, upright position. “The foot rest is also adjustable according to baby’s height,” she confirms.

While this chair scored high overall, Germany mentioned it was a bit harder to clean than others due to the fabric covering. That said, the seat pad is machine-washable, and Germany notes that food didn’t stick to the material all that easily. In fact, she tells us that “it still looks brand new even after days of using it.” She also liked that the dishwasher-safe tray could be clipped onto the back of the chair when it’s folded down to make it even more compact when stored.

Dimensions: 25" (L) x 19.5" (W) x 42" (H) | Weight: 18 lbs. | Age range: | Weight capacity: 40 lbs. | Dishwasher-safe tray: Yes

Our product tester says:
“I would recommend this chair because it’s both practical and stylish. I especially love that it is able to fold down to a very compact design. It’s great for transporting around or just keeping it and storing it at home.”

What We Love
  • Made of durable European hardwood in a range of finishes
  • Minimal, Scandinavian-inspired style
  • Transitional design works for children and adults too
Things To Consider
  • Difficult to adjust
  • Strap buckle can be stiff to use

Becoming a parent doesn’t have to mean bringing a bunch of bright plastic baby gear into your home if that’s not your style. The Stokke Tripp Trapp high chair is made of European beech and oak wood and is beloved for its sleek, durable design. Notably, the seat was first launched in 1972, and some families say theirs has lasted for decades. “[It'll] last for years (my grandma bought one for her grandchildren 25 years ago and still has it!),” gushes stellablue96, a member of The Bump forums. Small wonder, then, that the Tripp Trapp is our Best of The Bump winner for best wooden high chair for a second year in a row.

Our tester Danae, a mom of three, was a fan of the Tripp Trapp’s Scandi-chic vibe and awarded it a 10 out of 10 score for style. As she says, it’s “very appealing on the eye.” But there’s more to this high chair than looks—the adjustable seat design conveniently grows with your child from infancy and beyond. If you want to start using the Tripp Trapp right away, a newborn attachment (sold separately) lifts baby up to table height while keeping them reclined and cozy. Once they’re old enough to sit upright (around 6 months), you can buckle them right into the seat for mealtime. Older children can forgo the straps and tray and use it as a regular seat that slides right up to the table. And this convertible high chair doesn’t stop there. Because the high chair has a weight capacity of 242.5 pounds, penguingrrl, another member of The Bump forums, says all their loved ones are able to use them when they come over. “[At parties, we] were able to set the high chairs up in 'adult chair' mode and have extra seating for our guests. I plan to keep these as playroom /[and] extra chairs for company long after the kids are done using them as everyday chairs,” she explained.

Image: Danae C.

Of course, no chair can look good if it's perpetually a mess—but that won’t be an issue with the Tripp Trapp. Danae gave the convertible high chair top marks for ease of cleaning. “It wipes very easily, and I like that the tray is detachable so I can just clean it over the sink or dump leftovers into the trash.” Danae also appreciated the tray’s versatility when it came to different mealtimes. “I like that the tray is detachable so my son is able to come right up to the table or I can put the tray on and he can have his own space.” Most importantly, Danae felt the chair offered secure positioning for her baby. “It held my son very well and doesn’t seem like it would be easy to tip. My son seems very comfortable in it and is very content.”

Our product tester says:
“Very aesthetically pleasing. I love that it has cover options so I could change out the colors to match seasonal decor. Very appealing to the eye.”

What to Consider When Shopping for a High Chair

When picking out a high chair, safety is obviously the top priority. According to Dina DiMaggio Walters, MD, a board-certified pediatrician and a spokesperson for the AAP, safety features like a sturdy, tip-proof base and effective straps should be your primary concern. And as the AAP itself notes, it’s best to use a high chair manufactured or imported after June 2019. That’s when updated CPSC safety standards took effect, including new standards for stability and restraint systems—all high chairs made after this date meet requirements for stability, have a crotch restraint and a three-point restraint system and include a warning label on how to prevent falls. If you’re buying a used high chair and you’re not sure how old it is, a label on the high chair will list the manufacture date.

With that taken care of, you can put some thought into your lifestyle—how and when you’ll be using your high chair. To streamline your search, keep the following in mind:

  • Ease of cleaning. Feeding a baby is a messy process, so finding a high chair that’s straightforward to clean is of the utmost importance to many parents. Kimminau says to look for a high chair with “easy-to-clean surfaces without fabric, notches or grooves.” This is sage advice, since some chairs with padded seats tend to trap crumbs in those hard-to-reach crevices. Conversely, sleeker designs tend to have fewer nooks and crannies.
  • Removable tray. To make cleaning less of a chore, Kimminau recommends purchasing a high chair with a removable tray. It should also be dishwasher-safe, small enough to actually fit inside your appliance and free from awkward parts that prevent you from setting it down on a kitchen counter or sink.
  • Adjustability. You’ll want a high chair that grows with your child’s changing needs. A seat with different height and recline levels is essential, and an adjustable footrest will make it easier for baby to sit in the 90-90-90 position. Equally important (but less obvious), it’s worth checking if the tray level and depth can be modified to create more space as your child grows.
  • Size and shape. Not all high chairs are foldable, so you’ll need decent kitchen space if you choose one that stays in place the whole time. Check the size of the base area–some high chairs are slimmer on top and flare out at the bottom for stability.
  • Convenience. What will make feeding time easier for your family? Perhaps it’s a really easy-to-clean high chair or, according to Kimminau, “many people are prioritizing a chair that is able to be pulled up to the table so that babies and toddlers can fully interact with their family at meal times.”
  • Longevity. Many of the best baby high chairs are pretty pricey, so you’ll want to get the most bang for your buck. Whether baby’s high chair is wooden or plastic, it should be built to last. If you’re looking for one chair to follow your child through toddlerhood and beyond, many top-rated high chairs have convertible, multifunctional designs that can be used for many years.

When Can Babies Sit in High Chairs?

“Babies can sit in a high chair once they have good head control and can sit with little support, which is generally around 6 months and also coincides with the age we are introducing solid foods,” explains DiMaggio Walters. This is in line with CDC advice, which states you shouldn’t introduce solid foods until baby can hold their own head up and are able to sit without much support, if any. That said, manufacturers provide specific age recommendations for their individual products. Some can be safely used with newborns, thanks to specific recline options and infant support features. These provide a safe space to place young babies, whether you’re looking to have a clear, elevated view of your baby or you want them to join the family at the table (even if they’re not eating solids yet).

How to Use a High Chair Safely

Whenever you decide to introduce a high chair to your little one’s mealtime routine, it’s important to use it safely. The AAP recommends the following guidelines:

  • Stability. Make sure the high chair has no chance of tipping. That means placing it far enough from the table or counter so baby can’t use their feet to push themselves back. Don’t let other children play or climb on the high chair either.
  • Supervision. Always supervise your child when they’re in their high chair and never let them stand. “Don’t leave baby alone in a high chair or place it too close to a table where they can reach for hot liquids or grab a piece of food that might not be developmentally appropriate,” DiMaggio Walters adds.
  • Straps. Use the high chair’s safety straps—they should always be buckled. Don’t ignore crotch straps; they prevent baby from sliding out.
  • Locking mechanism. When you unfold a collapsible high chair, make sure it’s locked into place so it can’t refold while in use.

Finally, always remember the 90-90-90 position. Kimminau states that not every high chair provides the right support. “For smaller babies (around 6 months) when they start eating, many highchairs don’t provide the proper back support needed, and you find your baby slouching,” she explains. When your baby is seated in their high chair, make sure they’re maintaining a 90-degree angle at their hips, knees and ankles.
