Well, if you’re not counting the countless little princesses born every day, there are actually 51 princesses of known and recognized royal families. Perhaps the most famous princesses in the world come from the British royal family. With Kate Middleton’s status as the Princess of Wales and her daughter’s as Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. But there are princesses from all over the world! With 26 monarchies spread around Europe, Africa, and Asia, there are still plenty of countries holding onto the dregs of historical politics. Some princesses hold the title for life, too, getting a front-row seat to history in the making; Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands is 85 years old, and even though she was Queen for 33 years, she returned to princess-hood after her son succeeded the throne.

The answer to this question is different depending on which continent you poll. In most of North America, Europe, Asia, and Oceania, Cinderella was the reigning champion. A whopping 76 countries rallied behind her, with Elsa and Rapunzel taking 28 each. Belle and Ariel took most of what countries were left, but if you’re looking for the new age gals—Moana, Merida, and Tiana—and Mulan, there are some countries that didn’t have princess data just yet. How many Disney princesses are there?
It might surprise you to know that there aren’t actually that many Disney-official princesses! There are only 13, and this small collection has grown slowly since 1937 with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Shortly after came Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, giving us the titular name and the beautiful Aurora both. But as the decades went on, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Mulan in their groundbreaking animations arrived, took on the task of giving the princesses a little more individuality. The newer era of Disney princesses went one step further though, with calls for unadulterated independence through Tian, a re-vamped Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya.
