Summer is more than just a season. She’s a happy, carefree girl who loves animals, the earth and her many girlfriends. She’s as casual and laid-back as the time period she was named for. Her name is a direct pickup from the season, which came out of the Old English word “sumor.” It has been used as a given name since the 1970s, when parents dismissed traditional names for words with a nature focus. Even pop culture likes it: Summer Roberts (played by Rachel Bilson) wore it on “The O.C.,” as did the title character (played by Zooey Deschanel) in the 2009 movie “500 Days of Summer.”
