In a nutshell
Based on hands-on product testing, we chose the Baby Trend Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS as the overall best wagon stroller for kids. This hybrid kids’ wagon is easy to push and pull over various terrains, folds quickly and is reasonably priced, making it a stand-out choice for families.

Wagon strollers are a relatively recent entry to the market—but their surge in popularity over the past few years comes as no surprise: The best wagon strollers combine the convenient maneuverability of a stroller with the extra capacity and ruggedness of a wagon to make family outings all the easier, wherever they might be.

I was admittedly skeptical when I first tried a friend’s wagon stroller, thinking it could never replace my go-to stroller that I’ve used for years—but I was so wrong. As a mom of four, wrangling them all out the door can be a struggle, especially since my youngest hates riding in her stroller. Thankfully, she loves cruising around in our wagon. I still use my everyday stroller for runs and long walks, when I know my kids may fall asleep. But my wagon stroller is what I consistently use on a daily basis, and my kids prefer it that way.

The best wagon strollers allow you to easily and comfortably transport multiple kids and all of their gear. And when your kids no longer need a ride, a wagon stroller can be repurposed as a convenient way to haul around sports gear, beach toys and groceries. But while some families need a wagon to roll down busy sidewalks and in and out of stores, others are after a heavy-duty model, able to take on the roughest domains or even handle sand (the toughest ask for most wagons, and more of that later). So we recruited small and large families with a range of different demands to thoroughly test 13 top-rated kids’ wagons to find the best for their needs.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Wagon Strollers

Image: Danielle R., Elise M., Jamie H.

The Bump editors did extensive research to identify 26 of the top wagon strollers on the market. They also did a deep-dive into exactly what parents need out of their wagon strollers, including considerations like type of terrain, number of kids and price points, and then used that criteria to narrow the field down to a shortlist of 13 products to test. From there:

  • We enlisted the help of 13 parents to road-test these wagon strollers with their own children. These independent product testers used each wagon in their local neighborhoods, at the beach, while running errands and everywhere in between.
  • Testers evaluated the wagons across several categories, including ease of pulling and pushing, ease of steering, ease of folding and unfolding, features, design and style, and value for money.
  • To understand how these wagon strollers have worked for other families, we scoured online forums and message boards and read customer reviews to find out what parents nationwide looked for in kids’ wagons.
  • As a mom of four, I also relied on my own hands-on experience with several popular wagon strollers.
  • When choosing which wagon strollers to feature in our roundup, we also considered factors such as the number of seats, size when folded and unfolded, car seat compatibility, whether it can be pushed and pulled and so much more.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

Best Wagon Strollers

Overall best wagon stroller

What We Love
  • Easy to push and steer
  • Simple to fold
  • Reasonable price point
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Seats convert to flat mat for sleeping
Things To Consider
  • Can’t fit both a car seat and a second child
  • Doesn’t have dedicated footwells

Baby Trend is known for its top-tier baby gear that strikes the balance between durability, quality and comfort—and the Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS is no exception. Out of all the wagon strollers we tested, this model stood out thanks to its ease of pushing and pulling—something that should be a key component in any wagon stroller, but not every model excels at both! Indeed, I’ve found that some wagons require a little extra muscle compared with standard strollers, even on smooth pavement. This top-rated kids’ wagon earned high scores across the board, making it a clear winner of our Best of The Bump award for overall best wagon stroller. (See all of this year’s Best of The Bump winners.)

“I was super impressed with how smooth it was to push and pull this wagon,” says our product tester Jamie, mom of four with one on the way. “On smooth terrain like the sidewalk, it took no effort.” While she notes that it “took a little effort” to maneuver on uneven terrain, “overall it was still very smooth and the tires did very well.” The mom of two tested it around her neighborhood, in the store and on a bumpy trail in the woods, and it could handle it all easily. “Even pulling uphill was a lot easier than other wagons we have tried,” Jamie reports.

Image: Jamie H.

This ease of pushing and pulling can be attributed to the wagon stroller’s two-handle design. Rather than using the same handle to push and pull, the Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS has one main push handle (that’s angled like a stroller handle for comfort) and a hidden straight pull handle on its base. Thanks to this clever feature, you can pull the wagon when needed and tuck the pull-handle away when using it as a stroller. “Steering was extremely easy on all sorts of terrain, especially in the store,” Jamie tells us, pointing out that short and wide turns were no issue. Moreover, she says it was simple for both her and her partner to use. Although the handlebar itself isn’t adjustable, Jamie and her partner found the grip worked well for both of them even though, as Jamie explains, “my husband is tall and I’m short.” The large push brake also makes it easy to park the wagon when needed—plus, folding it was a breeze. “My husband had zero trouble folding and unfolding the wagon. He could do it with one hand,” Jamie shares, adding that they could store it in their home and trunk when needed.

Image: Jamie H.

The couple tested the Expedition 2-in-1 Stroller Wagon PLUS with their one-year-old and 3-year-old, and both toddlers fit comfortably in the spacious interior. This wagon stroller has two built-in seats with three-point safety harness belts, which Jamie appreciated. “Buckling the kids safely was no problem. The [belts] were easier to operate than others I’ve tried,” she says. The brand’s special Seat2Mat cushion easily converts from a seat to a flat mat for naps too. That’s a very handy option, given that wagon strollers can be tough and even uncomfortable for little ones to try to snooze in.

In addition to space for your kiddos, this wagon stroller has ample room for anything you may need while out and about. The storage basket can be flipped so you can use it at the front or back of the wagon, depending on your needs. “The outside caddy was great for a small bag with diapers and wipes. All the storage compartments were very easy to access,” says Jamie. The center console with two cupholders and snack trays as well as space in the handlebar for your keys, phone and a drink were also highlighted during testing. All in all, this kids’ wagon impressed Jamie and her husband across all categories and they’d definitely recommend it to other parents. “It feels very durable and worth the investment,” Jamie shares.

Best budget-friendly wagon stroller

Radio Flyer, Discovery Stroll 'N Wagon with Canopies
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Lower price point
  • Separate push and pull handles
  • Easy to push on varied terrain
  • Relatively compact for a wagon stroller
Things To Consider
  • Our tester wished it had more foot space
  • No locking mechanism when closed
  • May not fit two large toddlers
  • Not car seat-compatiblea

Families who already have a primary stroller, or simply don’t want to spend a small fortune on baby gear, can count on this affordable wagon stroller to meet their needs at a reasonable price. In fact, the Radio Flyer Discovery Stroll 'N Wagon has the lowest price point out of the models we tested, while still offering a smooth experience for parents and kids, earning it the title of best budget-friendly wagon in our Best of The Bump awards.

Our tester Sarah and her family used this wagon stroller on several outings, ranging from a trip to Target to a local city playground. “It was really easy to maneuver the wagon on all types of terrain,” Sarah reports. As the slimmest, smallest wagon stroller on our list, it was also simple to steer and turn in tight spaces, like the aisles of a store. To allow others to get by, Sarah tells us that “it was pretty easy to ‘parallel park’ the wagon and get it really close to the side of the aisle.”

Image: Sarah A.

When using it around the city with her one-year-old and 2-year-old, Sarah appreciated that the Radio Flyer wagon was lightweight. She tells us that it “didn't feel too heavy to pull, even with two kids and playground gear (three sets of roller blades, jump ropes) in it.” The large, 12-inch rear wheels ensured that going up and down curbs wasn’t bumpy for her toddlers. And when it was time to put it away for the day, folding wasn’t an issue. “The wagon is very easy to fold, since all you have to do is lift a handle in the middle of the seat. It took me less than 10 seconds to learn to fold the wagon,” Sarah praises, adding that it was equally straightforward to unfold.

Image: Sarah A.

The Radio Flyer Discovery Stroll ‘N Wagon is also packed with plenty of convenient features to meet your family’s needs on the go. The children’s wagon’s zippered side entrance allows kids to get in and out independently, which Sarah and her toddlers loved. The family also appreciated the spacious cupholders, the large sun canopies (complete with magnetic peek-a-boo windows) and the separate push and pull handles.

If you’ve used other wagon strollers, you’ll notice that the Radio Flyer wagon feels a little less sturdy than pricier models. Kids also have to sit cross-legged in this wagon or with their legs out straight, since there is no designated spot for their feet. Most don’t seem to mind, though. And, because this is a smaller wagon, it will be harder to fit two kids inside as your little ones grow. Overall, this is still reliable and robust enough to haul kids around comfortably. You can count on this budget-friendly toddler wagon to get your little ones from point A to point B with ease, whether you’re walking through a park or navigating a busy sidewalk.

Our product tester says:
“We took the wagon around our neighborhood, on uneven sidewalks, into and around Target, to our local playground and to a park near us (onto the grass and dirt). It was really easy to maneuver the wagon on all types of terrain. [] Compared to other wagons, I would recommend this wagon as a budget option for other parents.”

Best everyday wagon stroller

WonderFold L2 Stroller Wagon

Albee Baby|$749
What We Love
  • Good maneuvrability
  • Easy to push and pull
  • Lots of storage space
  • Side door makes it simple to get kids in and out
Things To Consider
  • Heavy
  • Not a compact fold
  • Not car seat-compatible
  • High price point

Some wagon strollers are better suited for short trips to the park, while others can stand up to your family’s daily grind. If you need a workhorse wagon, look no further than the WonderFold L2, selected as the best everyday wagon stroller in our Best of The Bump awards. It’s the perfect everyday accessory, with enough room to comfortably seat two, plenty of storage for shopping bags, lockable swivel front wheels to ensure smooth navigation and adjustable handlebar.

Elizabeth, a mom of two, used the Wonderfold L2 at a toddler theme park as well as at a shopping outlet, and in both locations it was a dream to handle. “The wagon is easy to pull on flat surfaces such as sidewalks,” says Elizabeth, adding that even with both her children and shopping bags on board, she didn’t struggle to steer the wagon. “I used it inside a shopping store and it was easy to steer around the store while I was browsing and shopping around,” she shares. “I also pulled the wagon on a not-so-smooth surface like grass and it was also easy to maneuver.” Our tester did note that she preferred to push the wagon stroller than to pull it, as it felt smoother to maneuver in push mode and she likes to keep her kids in sight.

Image: Elizabeth M.

Part of the reason this wagon is so easy to steer is due to the four all-terrain wheels that can swivel 360 degrees, making it easy to turn on a dime. “The tires’ suspension felt great while maneuvering the wagon through sidewalks and on bumpy terrain like a grassy surface and going down a curb,” confirms Elizabeth. The other secret to its success is the adjustable handlebar, which has an easy-grip faux leather cover and a wrist-strap for added security. “The handlebar was easy to grip,” says Elizabeth, adding that she “loved that you can adjust to your height,” as she is 5'2" while her partner is 5'9". “We both found it so easy to steer the wagon around everywhere we went.”

Image: Elizabeth M.

The WonderFold L2 also received a 10 out of 10 score for features, with our tester praising many aspects of the design. “I loved the features on the wagon. For example, it has a storage box that’s covered and it’s a great size,” gushes Elizabeth. She says she fit a small purse, snacks and a sweater inside the storage compartment and still had room to spare. The fact that it’s covered is a huge plus as, in the event of a rain shower, your personal items will stay dry. Our tester also highlighted the overhead canopy as a standout feature. “The wagon also has a canopy that is easy to put on and remove as needed, and this helps to block the sun and provide shade,” she shares. Kids can climb in and out themselves thanks to the side door and Elizabeth notes that the safety harness is easy to buckle and adjust if needed. Reclining seats and a detachable cup holder add to the daily convenience of this wagon stroller.

This wagon folds up and even has a kick stand to keep it upright and save on space. “Folding the wagon is simple and just takes a few steps to completely fold,” says Elizabeth. She also points out that the wagon can be pushed on its wheels when it’s folded, making it seamless to move around if you need to say, store it in a corner at the grandparents. Keep in mind, though, that this is one of the heaviest wagons on our list. While that adds to its sturdy feel, it also means the L2 may be tough for some people to lift in and out of a trunk. Still, our tester found that this wagon is well made and feels high-quality—and she plans to use it for years to come.

Dimensions (open): 53.1" (L) x 26.4” (W) x 47.2" (H) | Dimensions (folded): 40.5" (L) x 26.4" (W) x 25.2" (H) | Product weight: 40.85 lbs. | Weight limit: 114.3 lbs. | Age rating: 6+ months | Car seat-compatible: No

Our product tester says:
“I was able to push the wagon very easily everywhere we went, with my 3-year-old and one-year-old plus a couple of shopping bags inside. It was also smooth and easy to push on grass and easy to move around and go up and down curbs.”

Best stroller for all terrain

Joey The Wagon
Image: Joey
What We Love
  • Good performance across different terrains
  • Most lightweight option on our list
  • Wide, overlapping sun canopies
  • Easy-to-clean, durable material
Things To Consider
  • Handlebar isn’t adjustable
  • Mixed reviews about its performance on sand

If you’re planning to frequently use your wagon over both smooth and rugged ground, a true all-terrain wagon is a must-have—and The Wagon from Joey definitely meets that requirement. From cross-country paths to sidewalks and paved roads, our tester Danielle pushed and pulled this toddler wagon across many different surfaces. Overall, she thought it was a breeze to maneuver in most scenarios. “If used in your neighborhood, this wagon is going to feel like a luxury vehicle. There is very little strain on the person pulling the wagon,” she shares. “We also took this wagon with us to the local farm to grab some groceries and then have lunch. The wagon can be easily pushed over hilly grass and uneven earth. I was able to easily push both children and snacks through the farm with its pitted ground.” Thanks to the Joey’s all-terrain tires, lightweight design and comfortably positioned handlebar, Danielle tells us, “I felt like I could pull or push it for hours causing me no physical tension or discomfort.”

The only place Danielle found it challenging to use this wagon stroller was at the beach—a spot where most wagons struggle. However, it was doable, which is still saying something.

Image: Danielle R.

Another high point for Danielle was the Joey’s super-simple folding technique. All you have to do is push down the seats so they lay flat, then unlock the handlebar and do the same. “It takes less than 20 seconds to fold or unfold this wagon,” she praises. “You can fold or unfold this wagon with one hand, which I did often because my other arm was holding my 8-month-old.” Danielle tells us she was also able to pick this wagon up and load it into the trunk of her car with one hand, partly due to its relatively light weight (30.7 pounds).

When it comes to additional features, the Joey is anything but lacking. It has six cupholders, a center console with snack trays and an extendable footwell to keep your kiddos comfy. Whether it’s a sunny fall morning or a drizzly spring afternoon, you can count on the wide canopies to protect your little ones from the elements. Danielle says the shades expanded to overlap in the middle, so they completely covered her kids—a great feature for outdoor country strolls. “The look of the canopies are also high-end and aesthetically pleasing. My daughter even liked having it up due to the wind,” she shares. And after all your outdoor adventures, the fabric and wheels are easy to clean. Danielle liked this option so much, she says, “this wagon may be a better alternative than a double stroller.”

Dimensions (open): 59.3" (L) x 34.9" (W) x 25" (H) | Dimensions (folded): 38.2" (L) x 25" (W) x 18.1" (H) | Product weight: 30.7 lbs. | Weight limit: 110 lbs. | Age rating: Up to 5 years | Car seat-compatible: Yes

Our product tester says:
“I was very happy with the way the wagon handled in most terrains and situations. I felt my children were very safe while I either pulled or pushed the wagon due to the 5-point safety harness and the suspension. I also really appreciated how far the canopies extended and shielded my children from the sun.”

Best wagon stroller for the beach

Veer Cruiser Beach Essentials
Image: Veer
Buying Options
Veer|$998
What We Love
  • Provides good ride over sand
  • Can be used on and off the beach
  • Sturdy, smart design
  • Easy to fold
Things To Consider
  • Very expensive
  • Have to swap out wheels for use off sand
  • Accessories like sun shade and storage basket cost extra

Like traditional strollers, most wagon strollers are noticeably hard to push or pull across sand. Some options claim to be good on sand, but in the course of our strict and extensive testing, we did not find even one wagon that, out of the box, lived up to our expectations for beach performance. The best solution we found was to use the Veer All-Terrain Cruiser with the brand's Beach Wheel Kit accessory, which can be purchased together in the Cruiser Beach Essentials bundle. Adding these specialized beach wheels to the All-Terrain Cruiser made the process of moving kids and beach gear over sand relatively easy, earning this combo a Best of The Bump award for best wagon stroller for the beach.

We’ve had two testers use the Veer All-Terrain Cruiser (including me!). Michelle, a mom of a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, praises the wagon's performance across different types of ground, telling us, “One of my favorite things about the Veer is how easy it is to maneuver. [] Even with two toddlers in it, it’s still super easy to push. It does great on just about any terrain.” However, Michelle points out that while "it's not impossible" to use the standard All-Terrain Cruiser wheels on sand, it is a struggle. The key is to use Veer's beach wheels, which can be swapped in for the standard tires with the push of a button.

Image: Korin M.

The big, broad wheel accessories of the Beach Essentials Kit are a winner. I live in a beach town and pull my kids across the sand several times a week. While any beach wagon you use over hilly dunes is always going to take a little muscle, I found that this wagon moves easier than my usual beach wagon—and that one was specifically designed for sand! The Veer also sits relatively low to the ground, which I find creates a better balance. I've had issues in the past with my beach wagon tipping over on the sand with kids and stuff inside—that's not a problem with this one.

The Veer All-Terrain Cruiser is a very sturdy wagon with a high-quality feel and smart design. The handlebar, which is comfortable to grip, can be lowered to pull the wagon or raised and locked into place when you prefer to push. (Although take it from me, pulling is best on sand.) This wagon has plenty of internal pouch pockets, along with a removable drink and snack tray. Unlike some wagon strollers, the Veer Cruiser has actual seats with a three-point harness, so kids have plenty of leg room. (If you want more space, the brand also offers the four-seater Veer Cruiser XL Beach Essentials bundle.) The wagon folds easily, and the wheels can be removed for a better fit if your trunk space is tight. If you plan to use the wagon on and off the sand, you’ll need to keep swapping the standard wheels for beach wheels, as well as change out the wheel protectors. The process isn’t hard and can be done in three to five minutes. It’s just something to consider.

Image: Michelle K.

While it’s an incredibly robust and versatile wagon, the full Beach Essentials bundle isn’t cheap. Thankfully, if you already have the Cruiser or the Cruiser XL, you can just buy the beach wheels separately, which lowers the price significantly. If you want additional accessories, like a storage basket and canopy, you’ll need to purchase these separately. But the Veer Cruiser Beach Essentials kit can be used for years and for all types of families. I was even approached by a woman the last time I was at the beach, who (after seeing it in action) was interested in buying one not to use with children, but for hauling her beach gear over the dunes.

I live on the beach and I use my Veer All-Terrain Cruiser on and off the sand on a daily basis—getting the beach wheels made sense for my family. The investment won’t be worth it for everyone, but if you’re a beach regular like me, it makes the whole experience much smoother.

Our product tester says:
“Steering is a breeze compared to a traditional beach wagon, since the wagon sits low to the ground and has better balance, plus the wheels are specifically designed for sand. While it's harder to pull up and down steep dunes, it travels pretty easily across flat sand and wet sand, while maintaining Veer's impressive suspension. My kids were very comfortable while we cruised along.”

Best wagon stroller for 3 or more kids

What We Love
  • Ample room and foot space for four kids
  • Raised, reclining seats
  • Plenty of storage options
  • Can be stored upright
Things To Consider
  • Heavy (as it’s a 4-seater)
  • Can be tough to maneuver over rough terrain

Transporting multiple kiddos isn’t easy, but a four-seater wagon stroller can make the process more seamless, fun and comfortable for everyone. Our favorite is the Best of The Bump-winning WonderFold W4 Elite Stroller Wagon, which impressed our tester Elise across almost all categories. As the mom of a one-year-old and 3-year-old triplets, her family needs a go-to set of wheels to keep everyone content and secure, and this wagon checks both of those boxes and then some. “Compared to a double stroller, the wagon offers more space and versatility,” Elise tells us.

The wagon stroller has four raised seats, each with a five-point safety harness, that can recline to accommodate naptime and changing needs throughout the day. Because the seats are raised, the wagon’s interior has ample foot space for your little ones (read: they won’t be kicking each other as much on the go). Getting in and out is easy—kiddos can be lifted or climb in themselves via the front zippered entrance. And while it doesn’t have a snack tray or kids’ cupholders like some other wagons on the market, it does have an adjustable sun canopy and a roll-out wind shade to keep them comfortable, no matter the weather. For added convenience, this wagon is also equipped with plenty of storage space; it has pockets on all four sides and a removable zippered rear basket to hold extra essentials.

Image: Elise D.

Pushing and pulling the WonderFold W4 Elite Stroller Wagon was generally straightforward for Elise and her partner, especially on smooth ground, although it did struggle a little when the ground got less even. “The wagon stroller was manageable to push with all four of my children on board, but it did feel notably heavy on inclines and rough terrain,” Elise reports. “Pulling it was relatively easy as well, although the wagon's size could make it slightly cumbersome in tight spaces.” That said, she found that the wagon stroller’s all-terrain tires with suspension performed well overall and could manage most scenarios. Plus, she appreciated that, despite its large size, this wagon was relatively simple to store at home. “I love that the wagon can be stored upright, which definitely saves space in our garage,” Elise shares.

This premium four-seater wagon stroller has a high price tag, but Elise says it’s a worthwhile investment, especially if you have multiples. “While not the cheapest option on the market, its quality, upscale features and versatility justify the cost,” she explains. “As parents of four small children, including a set of triplets, the Wonderfold is an essential investment that we’ve been using nearly daily for over three years.”

Our product tester says:
“As parents of triplets and a younger singleton sibling, all under 4, the Wonderfold is our go-to stroller and we use it for just about everything.”

Best wagon stroller for car travel

Veer Cruiser City
Image: Veer
Buying Options
Veer|$699Amazon|$699
What We Love
  • Veer wagons have the most compact folds on our list
  • Lightweight for a wagon
  • Designed to push easily, but pulls well too
  • Easy setup
Things To Consider
  • Expensive
  • Accessories sold separately

One of the main advantages wagon strollers have over traditional strollers is size; there's tons of room to put children and store belongings. Of course, the obvious trade-off is that wagons tend to be bulky and heavy, making them tough to put in the back of your car for trips. The Veer Cruiser City offers the relatively compact fold and lighter weight you get from Veer wagons, along with a handle position that makes it easier to push through urban environments, making it a great option for parents who are loading the wagon in and out of their trunk on a regular basis. That was a big plus for our tester Chelsea, who is mom to a 2-year-old and 4-year-old. “The wagon fit perfectly in the trunk of my SUV,” she shares.

While no wagon is ever going to be truly lightweight, the Veer models are among the lightest options on our list, making the Cruiser City easy to lift in and out of your car as needed. The Cruiser City folds and unfolds quickly too. “It took less than 20 seconds to fold and unfold the wagon,” Chelsea says. Just be aware that the included snack tray doesn’t fold inside the wagon—it needs to be removed first.

Image: Chelsea G.

Once you get to your destination, this wagon rides well across a range of terrains. “The Veer Cruiser City wagon was very smooth to pull over mulch and soft sand,” Chelsea says. “It wasn't heavy or hard to pull, but felt lightweight.” Chelsea even describes the feeling of pulling the wagon up a grassy hill as “pulling air—that's how lightweight it felt.” She also shares that this wagon moves as easily as a standard stroller, and steers seamlessly over smooth and bumpy ground. It’s worth noting that the Cruiser City has the same wagon frame and wheels as the Veer All-Terrain; it’s just the handle is positioned on the opposite side. This makes it a little easier to push and steer the wagon when it’s in front of you, rather than when you’re pulling it behind you, and another reason why it’s particularly suitable for urban living.

While the Cruiser City is a sturdy and highly portable option, it’s expensive. Veer also sells accessories like a canopy and storage bag separately, which will bump up the cost even more. But it handles nearly every kind of terrain you throw at it, and hits the rare combination of solid and lightweight that works so well for travel. If you’re looking for a wagon that performs like a premium stroller and folds up small for road trips, this is the one for you.

Dimensions (open): 37" (L) x 20" (W) x 23" (H) | Dimensions (folded): 37" (L) x 20" (W) x 14" (H) | Product weight: 32.6 lbs. | Weight limit: 110 lbs. | Age rating: 0-5 years | Car seat-compatible: Yes

Our product tester says:
“This wagon is superb and will last our family a very long time for all our fun adventures. You could easily fold the Veer Cruiser City wagon with one hand and when the wagon is folded, it fit like a glove in the trunk of our 3 row SUV.”

Best wagon stroller for use with a car seat

Gladly Family Anthem2 2-Seater All-Terrain Wagon Stroller
Image: Gladly Family
What We Love
  • Ample space for infant car seat and toddler
  • Great on all terrains, according to our tester
  • Adjustable handlebar
  • Extendable footwell
  • Folds with car seat adaptors in place
Things To Consider
  • Car seat attachment can obstruct view of the tires

Through our research, it was clear that for parents who use their wagons with infants and toddlers, infant car seat compatibility was a major concern. And even though many wagon strollers offer car seat adaptors, one issue that came up in our testing is that once a car seat is installed, there often isn’t enough room for a second child! But that wasn’t the case with the Anthem2, earning the Anthem2 a Best of The Bump award for best wagon stroller for use with a car seat. The wagon boasts a spacious interior that measures 41 inches long and nearly 26 inches wide, offering ample space for an infant in a car seat and their older sibling. “I thought this wagon was the perfect size for my kids,” says Savannah, our product tester and mom of a 6-month-old and a 3-year-old. “With the car seat attached, my toddler’s view was a little obstructed, but honestly he didn’t notice or seem to care.”

Image: Savannah D.

Savannah and her family tested the Gladly Family Anthem2 on sidewalks at their local park and grass and gravel trails in their neighborhood. Thanks to its large, rugged wheels and sturdy suspension, this children’s wagon excelled in both situations. “With other strollers we have, I sometimes struggle to push them over the rough paths behind our house or if we’re in public and there are no concrete paths. I couldn’t believe how easily this wagon rode over rougher terrain. This wagon was surprisingly lightweight to pull and push,” Savannah shares. She and her husband appreciated that the handlebar could be moved up or down to accommodate both of their heights comfortably, and Savannah notes that the fold was simple, despite requiring two hands. Even better, she tells us, “You don’t have to remove the [car seat] adapter to fold it up.”

This wagon offers a lot of storage space, which Savannah was a fan of. She loved the extra compartment that was attached to the front, and says she was able to fit her large diaper bag in it. (Some brands require you to pay extra for this kind of storage space, making the compartment an excellent included bonus.) The handlebar storage was great for everyday essentials—with a lid to keep belongings secure—and the sun canopies for each seat were an appreciated feature. Savannah tells us she couldn’t wait to bring this kids’ wagon stroller on more family outings. “I honestly think this will last years with both of them, and my 3-year-old is in the 90th percentile for height,” she says.

Our product tester says:
“My 3-year-old can get in and out of the wagon himself easily, and I loved how easy it was to add my infant’s carrier car seat. I also loved that adding the car seat didn’t affect how easy the wagon was to push.”

What to Look for in a Wagon Stroller

Whether you have a big outing on the horizon or need something new to get your little ones (literally) on board, a wagon stroller is a great option for most families. I’m so obsessed with them that I own three models, plus a special set of beach wheels. As you shop, keep the following in mind to streamline your search:

  • Size. Kids’ wagons are meant to hold a lot without sacrificing mobility—whether that’s a lot of toys, a lot of children or a lot of pounds in general. As a result, most are larger than your average stroller, so you’ll want to think about dimensions (and where you’ll be storing it) before purchasing. Aim to get something a little bigger than what you think you’ll need since your kids will grow. Likewise, consider the product’s weight limits, age rating and safety instructions.
  • Car seat compatibility. Many parents use kids’ wagons as an alternative to full-size or double strollers, which makes car seat compatibility a top priority for some. If you already have an infant car seat, you’ll want to ensure the wagon will work with your model. Most brands offer car seat adaptors separate from the wagon stroller, which will likely be an additional cost. Moreover, if you plan to use your wagon with your infant and toddler at the same time, double-check its dimensions. Some wagon strollers may not leave much room for a second child once the car seat is installed, which was flagged as an issue by our product testers.
  • Folding ability. Families who plan to use their wagon in lieu of a traditional stroller will also want to consider folding. This will be important if you frequently put it in the trunk of your car or need something compact when storing it at home. I’ve found that some wagons also have wheels that easily come off, allowing you to maximize trunk and storage space.
  • Foot space. A common complaint during our testing process was that some wagon strollers lack dedicated footwells for kiddos. As a result, siblings don’t have their own room, which isn’t ideal. If you want to avoid this, go with a wagon that offers ample foot space for each child.
  • All-terrain wheels. For families planning to use their wagon strollers at the beach, on woodsy walks or anywhere else with uneven ground, all-terrain wheels are a must. These tires are designed with treads to provide traction on different surfaces.
  • Additional features. These days, fun colorways barely scratch the surface when it comes to wagon add-ons. Some are outfitted with UV-protective canopies, removable storage caddies, parent consoles and even cupholders for kids and adults. Not all wagon strollers come with every additional feature, so consider which ones are important to you to help identify the best option for your family. With a few (or all!) of these accessories, both you and your kiddos are sure to be comfortable on your next adventure.

Types of wagon strollers

There are two main types of children’s wagons on the market: Standard kids’ wagons and hybrid options. Here are the key differences:

  • Standard kids’ wagons. This type of wagon is designed with a handle just for pulling.
  • Hybrid kids’ wagons: Conversely, this type of wagon has a handle—or sometimes two handles—that allows parents to push it like a stroller and pull it like a classic wagon when needed. These are the most popular and common types of wagon strollers today.
