Many new fathers eagerly await that first “dada” from baby—it’s a title they’re especially proud to hold. And while he might make all the lame jokes, for some, the label “dad” just doesn’t feel spot on. If you’re looking for a dad nickname that feels more authentic to you and your family, read on for inspiration.

What to Consider When Choosing a Dad Nickname

You may want a dad nickname for several reasons. For starters, a gendered term like “dad” might not feel right for your identity, in which case a non-binary option might fit the bill. Or, perhaps you have a blended family structure that calls for thinking outside the box when it comes to what the kids call each parental figure.

Some men might have a complicated history with their own father, and prefer being called by their first name or another so-called pet name. Or perhaps you’d like to be called a version of the word “dad,” but with a special nod to your culture, heritage and first language. It’s also entirely possible that your dad nickname will come about organically as your kids get older and learn more about your personality and hobbies.
