Fun Facts About September Birthday Babies
Whether they’re curious and thoughtful Virgos or harmonious Libras, September babies are pleasant to be around—and their September birthdays come at a highly pleasant time. “[Parents-to-be] don’t have to worry about snowy drives to the hospital like my winter clients do, and fall weather makes pediatrician visits easier and safer than in icy or hot conditions,” says Kristin Revere, CED, a certified birth, postpartum and infant care doula, and the founder of Gold Coast Doulas in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “It’s also before flu and RSV season, which gives some peace of mind around visitors.”
There are even more advantages to being a September baby: They tend to excel in school and live longer lives, according to research—and they share a birth month with Beyoncé! Need we say more? Read on for more interesting facts about September birthday babies and ideas for celebrating them.
The September Zodiac signs are Virgo and Libra—the maiden and the scales. Does your September baby have Virgo thoughtfulness or Libra balance? Read on to decide for yourself.
Virgo
Virgo babies are born between August 23 and September 22. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says Virgos, who are usually represented by a maiden carrying a wheat shaft, are said to be meticulous and nurturing. “These kids are curious, thoughtful and tend to notice every little detail,” says Danielle Rothschild, an astrologer and owner of Little Mystic School, an astrology resource for parents. “Virgo kids love routine, clear instructions and a calm environment. They feel safest when the world feels orderly and make great little helpers if you let them take the lead.”
Libra
Babies born between September 23 and October 22 are Libras. The Old Farmer’s Almanac says Libras, symbolized by balanced scales, are drawn to harmony, justice and aesthetic beauty. “Libra children are naturally tuned into the energy around them. They thrive in calm, aesthetically pleasing environments and can become easily unsettled by tension or conflict,” says Rothschild. “Offer them choices, invite them into conversations, and watch them light up through connection and kindness.”
September’s primary birth flower is the aster, and its secondary birth flower is the morning glory, according to The Old Farmer’s Almanac. Asters are daisy-like flowers, known for their vibrant purple petals and yellow centers. They represent wisdom and love. Morning glories are violet, trumpet-shaped flowers that grow on climbing vines, and they symbolize love and resilience.
According to the Gemological Institute of America, the September birthstone is the sapphire, a deep-blue gem that exudes peace and tranquility. While sapphires come in a rainbow of other colors, the blue is the most classic and popular version. Sapphires are one of the most popular colored stones, and they have long represented romance, royalty and wisdom.
If you think September babies are everywhere, you’re not wrong. According to an analysis of births in the US from 1994 to 2014, September is the most common birthday month, with 11,811 average daily births. The most popular September birthday (and thus, the most popular birthday overall) is September 9, with 12,344 average daily births, and the least popular birthday in September is September 1, with 10,963.

September is a pretty fortunate month to be born—September babies are more likely to have health, longevity and academic success on their side. Read on to find out more.
September-born babies are more likely to live to 100
Long live September babies! A large sibling-based study found that babies born in the fall—September through November—were more likely to live to 100 compared to those born in other months. Researchers looked at over 1,500 US centenarians and found the longevity link held up even when controlling for family background and environment. Scientists think early-life exposure to seasonal infections, nutrition and sunlight may all play a role.
People born in September may have an academic advantage
A new study found that kids born earlier in the school year, like in September, tend to do better academically and feel more confident in the classroom. Researchers say it mostly comes down to relative age: Due to school entry cutoff dates, these kids are usually a little older when they start school and take tests, which gives them a leg up in classroom performance and self-esteem. So if your baby’s a September-born, they may walk into kindergarten with a built-in advantage.
September birthdays are linked to lower disease risk
A massive study using decades of health records found that your birth month may shape lifelong health outcomes. People with September birthdays showed a lower risk for several serious conditions, including certain heart diseases, compared to those born in other months. Researchers think seasonal factors like sunlight, vitamin D and early exposure to infections may play a small but important role.
During their celebration month, September birthday babies can enjoy the mild fall weather and back-to-school reunions with friends. “People have a lot to juggle in September, but my son’s birthday parties are always well-loved,” says Emily C., a mom of two in Minneapolis. “The temperatures are finally perfect here, so we make sure to take the party outside.”
“September marks back-to-school, a new season, and new ideas full of fresh energy and fall charm,” says Olivia Pollock, etiquette and hosting expert at Evite. “While a beach bash may not be on the table, the outdoors are still fun with gardens, apple picking and backyard BBQs. Whether your kiddo is the creative type, an animal lover or just here for the frosting (like my daughter), there’s a theme for everyone.”
For fall-themed September birthdays, Pollock recommends an apple-themed “Bushel of Fun” or an “Artsy Autumn” painting party. Or, keep it simple with a “Grill and Chill” theme to savor the last days of summer. “If your kiddo is still trying to soak up summer or ready for the school year ahead, September’s the perfect time to celebrate them exactly how they want,” she says.
September babies have the coziness of early autumn on their side when celebrating their birthdays—and their parents can enjoy some major perks in those early newborn days. Plus, science says they have health, longevity and academic success on their side. Let’s just say September babies are pretty charmed, and these delightful kids deserve all the birthday magic they inspire.
