Baby jumpers come in a few different forms. Baby door jumpers hang from doorways or feature accompanying stands, while baby jumper activity centers sit on the floor, and offer little ones loads of attached toys to interact with. In both, the seat is suspended by straps that allow your child to bounce up and down. The motion is fun and stimulating for baby, and the secure design means you can actually have your hands free for a bit. But what’s the best baby jumper for your needs? And when can baby actually use a jumper, anyway? Read on for the answers to all your questions.

When Can Baby Use a Jumper?

Before purchasing a jumper for baby, you’ll want to ensure that your pick is age-appropriate. Dina DiMaggio Walters, MD, a board-certified pediatrician, recommends that little ones should only use a jumper when they have “good neck control,” which typically occurs after or around the six-month mark. When baby is using a jumper, you’ll also want to make sure the height is adjusted so that their feet touch the ground and their hips are in a stable position.

How to Safely Use a Baby Jumper

Using a baby jumper at home can be lots of fun for little movers, but it’s always a good idea to keep some important safety tips in mind:

  • Jumpers are for playtime only. First and foremost, Natasha Burgert, MD, a pediatrician and a spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reminds parents that a jumper is not suitable for sleeping. If baby falls asleep in their jumper (it happens!), gently move them to a safe sleep space.
  • Be aware of height. Make sure the jumper is on the right height setting, so that baby’s full foot touches the ground (no tip-toes!).
  • Limit jumper time. Burgert suggests that baby jumpers be used for no more than 20 minutes a day. This way, baby has ample time to explore other developmental activities, including floor time and interactive play.
  • Keep an eye on baby. “Parents should always be supervising baby in the jumper,” says Walters. Make sure the baby jumper is always in your line of vision.

What to Look for in a Baby Jumper

Whether you’re on the hunt for a baby activity jumper or a space-saving design, there are a few standard features you should look for before purchasing any pick. Burgert recommends that parents shop for a jumper that can easily be adjusted to your desired height, with plenty of room to grow. If you’re opting for a baby jumper activity center, make sure it has interactive toys to engage your little one.
