Carving out time for a daily fitness routine can be difficult—but add a baby (or two) to the mix and it can feel virtually impossible. Fortunately, there are ways to get your sweat on while caring for kids. Mommy-and-me fitness classes, yoga or even a brisk walk with baby in a carrier, are all good options for new parents. But if you’re expecting twins—or already have a toddler in tow—things can get a little more complicated. That’s where a double jogging stroller can come in handy.

According to Loretta Cody, MD, a board-certified pediatrician based out of Connecticut, you can start using a double jogging stroller with your little ones around the 6- to 8-month mark. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or a total beginner, jogging strollers allow you to get out in the fresh air and exercise with your babies. Designed for two children, the best double jogging strollers are lightweight, durable and easy to steer. Want to learn more? When Can You Start Running with Baby?

Eager to get started? Slow your roll. It’s not safe to run with infants until they are at least 6 to 8 months old and able to sit upright. “The child should be able to comfortably be in a sitting position with full head and neck control,” Cody states. She advises parents to double-check with their infant’s pediatrician and to read the stroller’s label before using one. Moreover, most jogging strollers have an infant car seat attachment so you can use them from birth—just stick to walking for the first six months.

Do You Need a Double Jogging Stroller?

The right equipment is key for a stress-free exercise regimen. So if you plan to run with both of your kids strapped in, you’ll need a double jogging stroller. Think about it: You wouldn’t run a marathon in the same pair of sneakers you wear to shop for groceries! Regular double strollers are great for day-to-day use, but they can be big, bulky and heavy. Alternatively, jogging strollers are designed for speed and safety, whether you’re running along city streets or bumpy country paths. Granted, jogging strollers are expensive, but if you don’t have time to get to the gym, they can be well worth the investment.

What to Look for in a Double Jogging Stroller

Here are several important features to look for if you decide to buy a double jogging stroller:

  • Five-point safety harness. Ensuring your kids are safely strapped in is vital, especially if you’re running downhill or over rough terrain. A five-point harness safely restrains your child at the shoulders and hips.
  • Weight. Before you invest in a double jogging stroller, consider how much it weighs and if possible take it for a test spin. A lightweight stroller is best as you’ll be pushing the stroller, plus the added weight of your two children.
  • Weight capacity. In addition to the weight of the stroller itself, you’ll want to consider the weight capacity. “Make sure to check height and weight requirements,” reminds Cody. This way, you can ensure your kiddo is comfortable and safe as you stroll.
  • Wheel type. Jogging strollers typically have three large wheels (one lockable wheel at the front and two larger wheels at the back). The best options have pneumatic wheels—similar to bike tires—with built-in suspension. This type of wheel glides over rough terrain, absorbs shocks for a smoother ride and offers the least resistance while running.
  • Wrist strap. A wrist strap tethers you to the stroller, so it won’t roll away from you even if you’re traveling at speed.
  • Sun shades. The warmer months are ideal for outdoor exercise, but it’s important to protect your little ones from those UV rays. An adjustable sun visor offers shade and protects them from the glare of the sun. Just don’t forget to apply sunscreen too!
  • Easy fold and storage options. A jogging stroller is specifically designed for exercise and may not be suitable for everyday use. With this in mind, it’s best to buy a model that has a compact fold for easy storage.

Last but not least, Cody encourages parents to “check with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) before purchasing a double jogging stroller to make sure there aren’t any recalls or safety concerns.” And, of course, make sure to read all the instructions and safety manual before use.
