Fetal Viability?

I've heard that 24 weeks = viability. What does this really mean?

Generally, 24 weeks is the earliest that most OBs think your baby has a chance of surviving in the outside world. This means that if you were to go into preterm labor that couldn’t be stopped — or if baby were otherwise in serious trouble and had to be delivered — after you’ve hit week 24, your baby would have a shot at making it. But, baby would definitely be in for a long stay in intensive care, and would be at high risk for serious problems down the road.
