Halloween is a wicked time of the year for naming a new arrival. Ghastly ghouls, gothic literature, frightful characters from your favorite slasher films—there are so many places you can conjure up creepy-cute inspiration if you’re looking for a total treat (or trick!) of a moniker. But when Jack, Carrie and Casper seem to haunt the Halloween baby-name charts year after year, where do you turn for real magic? To the source, of course—wonderful witch names inspired by history, pop culture and the gothic aesthetic.

Before you break out the pitchforks, not all witches wore pointy hats and shadowy cloaks, or sailed through the night sky on a broomstick. Not all of them were sleuthing in the dark with their deathly potions, either. In fact, some of them were good. In ancient Egypt, they healed the sick through their spells and incantations. In ancient Greece, they were revered for their mystical knowledge and beguiling charm. It wasn’t until later history that the accusations spread, leading to centuries of witch hunts—and eventually, the famous Salem Witch Trials of 1692.

Now, witches are the inspiration behind some of the world’s most beloved fictional characters from pop culture (“It’s Levi-O-sa, not Levio-SA!”). And we’re here to prove their names serve as killer inspiration for October babies, too. So if you’re ready for charm and enchantment, read on to see what we’ve got bubbling in our cauldron of witchy name ideas for girls and boys. After all, a little dark magic might just be what your search needs.

Fun Facts About Witch Names

  • A very “Oz” invention: When Gregory Maguire wrote the novel Wicked, he created Elphaba’s name by taking Baum’s initials and speaking them out loud (L-F-B!).

  • A botanical backstory: Long before botanical monikers like Hazel, Rowan, and Briar became trendy baby names, early modern herbalists and “cunning women” used these exact plants in protective charms and traditional remedies.

  • Agatha Harkness is inspired by the real-life witch trials: Marvel’s Agatha Harkness (from WandaVision) is a combination of classic fiction and real-life lore. Her first name nods to writer Agatha Christie, while her character history in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is directly connected to the 1692 New England witch trials.

  • Real historical witches used secret names: During the European witch hunts, many folk healers and practitioners went by two names: their legal first name for public life and a secret “Craft Name” or “Cunning Name” (think Mother Shipton or Old Demdike). Using a secret name helped protect their families from prosecution.

  • Witch names are ironically Puritan: Monikers like Prudence, Mercy, and Charity were created by 17th-century Puritans to represent purity and obedience. These names are said to be all over the 1692 Salem Witch Trial records—one of the reasons we now associate them with spooky historical lore.
