In a nutshell
Based on hands-on testing with my own kids, feedback from nine other independent parent testers and expert guidance from pediatricians and a child development specialist, the Comfycubs Playpen is The Bump’s pick for overall best baby playpen. With its reconfigurable push-button panels, gorgeous natural wood styling and rock-solid build, it’s the playpen I’d easily recommend to a friend.

If you’ve ever tried to make a cup of coffee with a very active baby determined to climb into the dishwasher, you already understand the appeal of a playpen. As a mom of two and a longtime baby gear tester, I can confirm: A good baby playpen is one of the most under-appreciated pieces of equipment in your home.

To help you find the best baby playpen for your curious kiddo, I personally tested five playpens (three of which made it on this list!) with my son, who’s 17 months old and very, very mobile. We also enlisted an additional nine parent testers to put the other choices through their paces, from aesthetic wooden beauties to lightweight pop-ups you can use in the backyard.

What to Know Before Shopping for Playpens

Playpens provide a safe, enclosed space where your little one can crawl, cruise and explore while you handle adult life on the other side of the pen. As Dr. Amanda Gummer, PhD, a child development expert and founder of the Good Play Guide, tells us, “a playpen can be a safe ‘yes-space’—a tool that supports both child safety and caregiver functioning, as long as it doesn’t replace free movement and responsive interaction.”

If you’re looking for a space baby can sleep in, a playpen isn’t the right piece of gear for you. The products listed below are not suitable for sleep—just supervised play—and they’re not a substitute for plenty of free-roaming floor time. But when used thoughtfully, they’re a sanity-saver.

For play areas that also offer sleep-safe enclosures, we’ve reviewed the best pack and plays and playards. For safe-sleep spaces designed for travel, see our reviews of the best travel cribs.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Playpens for Babies and Toddlers

Image: Jennifer W., Dani W.

We performed extensive market research to pinpoint a range of common needs and pain points of families who use playpens. Then, to identify which products are best suited to solve those problems, we took the following steps:

  • We carefully reviewed product features, specifications and customer reviews to identify not just the overall top products on the market, but which of those might be well-designed to address specific parental needs.
  • We interviewed pediatricians and a child development expert to understand the essential features to look for in a baby playpen and the safety advice to keep in mind when using one at home.
  • We surveyed over 650 parents in The Bump community for additional insight into what they liked and didn’t like about specific playpens.

The Bump editors used this information to build a shortlist of 17 standout playpens to try. Then, to thoroughly test each product and decide which were deserving of The Bump’s recommendation:

  • The Bump sent every playpen to a parent product tester who had the right aged kids and lifestyle to be able to accurately assess how well that item met a specific need. All of our playpen testers are real parents who used the products at home with their young kids ranging in age from 2 months to 5 years old.
  • I tested five playpens with my 17-month-old son in our kitchen, dining room, living room and backyard—where most of our “real life” happens (working from home, cooking, chasing a 4-year-old around). We enlisted nine other parent testers to try out the rest.
  • We used playpens in different rooms in our homes and outdoor settings, evaluating how easy these were to put up and down, move around the house and store, how robust and escape-proof they felt, how well any entry gate locked and how the playpens held up to pushing, pulling and the occasional sibling pile-on. Playpens designed for outdoor use were tested both indoors and outdoors.
  • To understand how these top-rated baby playpens have worked for a variety of families, we scoured forums and message boards on The Bump and other sites, and read user reviews to discover what parents nationwide looked for in playpens for babies.
  • The Bump editors then combined all of this information—product features and functions, product testing results, guidance from expert interviews, customer reviews and survey feedback—to select which outstanding playpens to feature in this article.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

Things To Consider

  • Gate needs two hands to open
  • No carry bag included

The Bump takeaway: The Comfycubs Playpen for Toddler and Babies is the Best of The Bump winner for overall best playpen, thanks to its smooth, tool-free configurability, beautiful natural wood design and durable construction that's built to last through every stage of toddlerhood.

Every parent I know wants a playpen that hits these markers: spacious enough for a baby to move in, sturdy enough to trust, easy enough to set up that you'll actually use it and stylish enough that you won’t dread leaving it up in your living room. The Comfycubs is one of the rare playpens that delivers on all four.

Assembly
This is one of the easiest playpens I've set up. It truly is as simple as shaping the playpen, pressing the button that moves the hinge and boom, done. Thank you from moms everywhere! The push-button hinges let you reshape the playpen into an octagon, L-shape, square, rectangle or straight room divider in under a minute—no tools, no headaches.

The folding hinges are, in a word, awesome. They’re super easy to push down and swing whichever way you want. I personally tried the square, rectangle, octagon and straight-line configurations, and they all snapped into place easily.

The door to allow grown-up access has a double-locking mechanism with locks on the top and bottom, which scored high safety scores in my book. And once your child has outgrown a playpen, it can convert into a mountable baby gate (a feature I didn't personally test, but think is a great idea) so you can use it for even longer with your toddler.

Storage
The easy push-button design also makes the Comfycubs one of the easier playpens to store, since it folds down to one pretty compact piece. At almost 28 pounds it's not exactly lightweight, but it's manageable. Think of carrying a heavier wooden dining room chair around.

Style
I could chat with you all day about the Comfycubs’ style and design. This playpen is everything I'd hope for in cute-but-functional baby gear. The natural pine wood made the playpen look more like intentional furniture—it truly feels like it belongs in my home.

As for the clean test, wiping off snacks only took a wet washcloth. And while I’m personally not overly worried about the playpen looking dingy (hello fellow wranglers of rough kiddos!), the color of the wood does a great job hiding scuffs and scratches.

Yes, this one is a higher price point, but let me tell you: It's worth it. With a durable construction and second use as a baby gate or room divider, it's the kind of investment that will last your entire motherhood journey and does exactly what you need a playpen to do without looking like a sore thumb.

“I'd recommend this playpen to any parent looking for something that will last years, work great, fold up nicely and keep their home stylish. This playpen really hits all the markers in my book.”

Best baby playpen for portability

Bright Starts Pop n Play Portable Playard
Image: Amazon
Buying Options
Target|$72.99
What We Love
  • Easy to set up and take down
  • Lightweight and foldable
  • Includes carry bag
  • Budget-friendly
Things To Consider
  • Floor isn’t padded
  • Canopy sold separately
  • Smaller footprint than full-size playpens

The Bump takeaway: The Bright Starts Pop n Play Portable Playard is the Best of The Bump winner for best playpen for portability, thanks to its lightweight pop-up design, included carry bag and compact travel size that leaves plenty of room in the trunk.

If you're looking for a playpen that's easy to move from room to room, pack up for a trip to a friend's house or set up and take down as the day decides (with little notice), the Bright Starts Pop n Play is a great choice. Honestly, this is the easiest playpen to set up of all five I tested; it's my go-to if I’m in a pinch and need a playpen ASAP.

Setup and ease of use
After using it with my 17-month-old, I can say that portability is this playpen’s clear strength. True to its name, it features a one-piece, foldable star-like design that pops up in seconds—no loose parts, no complicated instructions.

At 12 pounds, it’s also pretty lightweight; when you carry it, it's essentially like carrying an outdoor camping chair all folded up. My fellow parent tester Kristina M. agreed, calling it “much lighter than expected.”

Image: Dani W.

When you combine the light weight and the easy fold, you wind up with a playpen that I could use inside, in a different room, lugged upstairs and even outside when yardwork called. It comes with a convenient carry bag, and also slid easily into the back of my car with so much room still left over.

Size and sturdiness
The portability does come at the cost of some square footage, but the 14 square feet of contained playing space was more than enough for Kristina's 10-month-old (and also for my son).

Where the playpen doesn’t compromise is on sturdiness. My 4-year-old daughter even climbed up the side and into it without it tipping at all. It's portable and solid—the best of both worlds!

Image: Dani W.; Kristina M.

Indoor and outdoor use
The mesh sides offer visibility and ventilation, and the water-resistant canvas floor means it works on a variety of surfaces. Just note that the floor isn't padded, and the canopy is a separate purchase if you'll be using it outdoors.

Style
While it won’t win prizes for being easy on the eyes (Comfycubs is your playpen if that's your priority), the shape is great and works well in so many different rooms, corners and spaces. It didn't create dead space at all.

Tester assembly time: 1.5 minutes | Dimensions: 46.5" (L) x 53.9" (W) x 26.4" (H) | Weight: 12 lbs. | Age rating: 6 to 24 months

Our product tester says:
“Many times, pop-up and travel baby gear can get cheap-y. But this playpen's foldable mechanisms are really high quality. I can see it withstanding thousands of ‘pop opens.’”

Best outdoor baby playpen

California Beach Co. Pop N’ Go Playpen
Image: Amazon
Buying Options
Amazon|$139.99
What We Love
  • Detachable UPF 50+ sun shade included
  • Built-in floor mat
  • Ground stakes for outdoor stability
  • Easy to set up, take down and carry
Things To Consider
  • Floor isn't padded (mat sold separately)
  • Higher price point

The Bump takeaway: The California Beach Co. Pop N' Go Playpen is the Best of The Bump winner for best outdoor playpen, thanks to its UPF 50+ canopy, ground stakes for grass stability and ultralight 7.2-pound design.

According to our parent community survey, 36 percent of families look for a baby playpen that can be used outdoors. While the Bright Starts Pop n Play is great for casual backyard use, the California Beach Co. Pop N' Go Playpen is built for the greater outdoors—and you can tell.

Outdoor features
The detachable UPF 50+ sun shade protects against harmful rays, ground stakes hold the playpen securely on uneven terrain and breathable mesh walls keep insects out while allowing 360-degree visibility from any angle.

Moreover, this playpen’s integrated tent-like floor keeps kiddos off the ground. This particularly pleased our tester Jennifer W., who tells us, "There was no need to lay down blankets to keep kids from having to sit on the ground unless you need cushion."

Size
The Pop N' Go offers a generous amount of play space. Jennifer found it big enough to fit her 2-month-old, 3-year-old and 5-year-old all at once. “My 5-year-old and 3-year-old had enough room that they could both lay down at the same time or have their own space to play with a toy,” she tells us. “The tent-like feel also was exciting and fun for them—they pretended they were camping while we were outside.”

Image: Jennifer W.

Portability:
At just 7.2 pounds, the Pop N’ Go playpen is no heavier than a laptop, and remarkably portable. The large footprint doesn’t make it ideal for room-to-room use, but carrying it out of the house for outdoor adventures is simple. In Jennifer’s experience, it really is as easy as folding the 48-inch-high playpen into a compact cylinder and popping it into the carrying case, which she found comfortable enough to wear over her shoulder.

Setup and ease of use
Setup took the mom of three under a minute on her first try! “Once it's out of the carry bag, the legs unfold and it takes shape (or 'pops up') on its own,” she tells us. “Then you push down the center mechanism to secure the playpen, and you’re all set.”

Cleaning was equally straightforward. “On several occasions I needed to shake out the grass and dirt that my kids brought in,” shares Jennifer. “The playpen was light enough that I could easily do this in just seconds.” Plus, the brand says the lightweight material can be hosed off as needed—which, realistically, you'll need with this much outdoor use.

Tester assembly time: 1 minute | Dimensions (open): 59" (L) x 59" (W) x 48" (H) | Weight: 7.2 lbs. | Age rating: 0+ months

Our product tester says:
“I would highly recommend this, especially to those who spend time at sporting events for older siblings, go camping, etc. Its lightweight design, comfortable carry bag and fast setup/teardown make this product a perfect addition for parents looking for a way to contain their little ones and/or provide sun and bug protection.”

Best budget-friendly full-size playpen

Evenflo Versatile Play Space
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Affordable price point
  • Adjustable panel configuration
  • Spacious footprint
Things To Consider
  • Though easy to fold, quite bulky to store

The Bump takeaway: The Evenflo Versatile Play Space is the Best of The Bump winner for best budget-friendly full-size playpen, offering adjustable panels and a spacious play area at a wallet-friendly price.

Most of the playpens we looked at fell into two camps: lightweight pop-ups at the affordable end, and sturdy wooden playpens north of $200. But the Evenflo Versatile Play Space carves out a third lane that’s all its own: A full-size, adjustable playpen that rings up for under $80.

The six interlocking, UV-weather-resistant panels give you 18.5 square feet of contained space, and reversible legs let you swap between non-scratch indoor pads and outdoor stakes for lawn stability. It doesn't come with as many panels as the Comfycubs (more can be purchased separately), and it doesn't work as a room divider or a baby gate, but you can absolutely add, remove or rearrange panels to suit different rooms or outdoor setups—not a feature you normally see at this price point.

Image: Firdausi Y.

Setup and ease of use
Our tester Firdausi set it up in under a minute and praised the customizable sizing, saying, “I’m able to make it bigger with more spaces, and when in a smaller space I can make it smaller by removing some pieces.”

At 27.75 inches tall, the walls are high enough to keep a determined toddler contained, but light enough to fold and stash when not in use. “It’s very easy to fold up and store when not in use because all the pieces stack on top of each other,” explains Firdausi.

Stability
Don’t let the plastic build fool you; those sides can more than stand their ground. “My baby loves grabbing onto walls and surfaces to pull herself up, and the playpen was sturdy enough to withstand her weight,” shares Firdausi—something 57 percent of the parents we surveyed equally value in a playpen.

Just note there's no padded floor, so you may want to layer a play mat underneath, especially over hard surfaces.

Tester assembly time: <1 minute | Dimensions: 28" (H) x up to 72" (diameter) | Weight: 16.9 lbs. | Age rating: 6+ months

Our product tester says:
“I would definitely buy this for myself because it fits my current lifestyle.”

Our community says:

This playpen is very sturdy, and I like how you can easily see your child through the gate. It does fold up easily, which is helpful for storage, and is easy to set up and take down. – Kenzie, mom of a 10-month-old and The Bump survey respondent

Best playpen with integrated play features

Avenlur Wooden Baby Playpen with Sensory Activity Panels
Image: Avenlur
Buying Options
Avenlur|$299
What We Love
  • Montessori-inspired activity panels
  • Sturdy, premium wood construction
  • Spacious footprint
  • Double-locking gate
Things To Consider
  • Heavier and harder to fold flat
  • Higher price point

The Bump takeaway: The Avenlur Wooden Baby Playpen with Sensory Activity Panels is the Best of The Bump winner for best playpen with integrated play features, thanks to its Montessori-style activity panels that earned real, repeated play in my home.

If you want a playpen that pulls double duty as an activity space, the Avenlur is genuinely impressive. The integrated play features are subtle—spinners, safe beads, gears and no flashing lights or overwhelming music—which lines up with what our child development expert recommends.

“If panels are loud and flashy or dominate the space, they can reduce the amount of self-directed exploration,” Dr. Gummer, a child development specialist, tells us, noting that “one low-stimulation panel” paired with an open floor and a small rotation of loose toys is the most developmentally helpful setup. That's pretty much the Avenlur in a nutshell.

Image: Dani W.

Toy performance
When I tested this playpen with my 17-month-old son, the play toys were the one thing on this playpen that got real, repeated use—he was occupied by them for 20-minute stretches, which, if you have a busy toddler, you know is no small thing. And for the 43 percent of the moms we surveyed who want a playpen designed for play, it’s no small thing either.

This playpen is also very easy to clean, even with the built-in play toys. They are thoughtfully designed to be easy to wipe down, which I love. All it takes is a wet washcloth.

Size
The 63 by 63-inch footprint is more than roomy enough for two kids. Honestly, I could see it fitting three or four small toddlers because my son and my 4-year-old could play in here with tons of space still around them. Even their dad or I could (and did) join in with room to spare.

Image: Dani W.

The double-locked gate kept my 17-month-old safely inside, and the natural wood looks seriously beautiful in a main living space. The only real trade-off is that it's heavier and doesn't fold down compactly—it's definitely a stay-put playpen, not a travel one, or even one you'll take down and put back up too often.

Tester assembly time: 10 minutes | Dimensions: 63" (L) x 63" (L) x 24" (H) | Weight: 22 lbs. | Age rating: 6+ months

Our product tester says:
“The play toys on this playpen got real, repeated use. They were genuinely useful in my eyes.”

Baby Playpen Safety Tips

Safety is always an important factor to consider when shopping for and using a baby playpen. First and foremost, parents should “never leave a child unattended in a playpen,” says Dr. Loretta Cody, MD, a board-certified pediatrician based out of Connecticut.

Keep pillows, blankets, stuffed animals and string toys out of playpens to reduce the risk of suffocation and other accidents during playtime.

As you shop, keep the following in mind to find an option that’s equal parts fun and safe:

  • Open/Close features. Before you buy, consider closure features (such as zippers, snaps or a gate) and how easily they might be opened by tiny hands. For rigid playpens, Dr. Cody recommends opting for a design that has well-protected hinges.
  • Visibility. Eighty-six percent of the parents we surveyed value the ability to easily watch their child. This might be achieved by bars or mesh walls, but if you go with mesh, Dr. Cody recommends regularly checking for tears in the sides.
  • Gaps and spaces. “The recommended gap between bars in a playpen is no more than 6 centimeters,” advises Dr. Jennifer Orosco, MD, a pediatrician at Ocean Pediatrics in Orange County, California. “This spacing helps prevent a child’s head from becoming trapped between the bars, reducing the risk of injury or suffocation,” she explains. Dr. Alexis Phillips-Walker, DO, a pediatrician at Memorial Hermann Medical Group Pediatrics in Atascocita, Texas, adds that “if the playpen has mesh sides, the holes in the mesh should be no larger than a quarter-inch to prevent small fingers and small buttons on clothes from getting caught.”
  • Climbability. Over 70 percent of parents who answered our survey told us that having an escape-proof baby playpen was paramount to them. To ensure your toddler can’t climb out, Dr. Gummer says that “height, panel rigidity and footholds matter.” Avoid playpens with horizontal cross-bars at toddler-foot height, and check that mesh sides stay taut—saggy mesh can quickly become a climbing assist.
  • Age and size limitations. Check if the playpen has any age, height or weight limitations, says Dr. Cody. While most designs are flush with the ground (meaning they have no weight limit), others are better suited to infants or younger tots. Regardless of these limitations, Dr. Phillips-Walker advises that the sides of the playpen should be at least 20 inches high from the floor of the playpen.
  • Stability. It’s no surprise that 57 percent of our survey respondents told us sturdiness was a priority when they searched for a baby playpen. With that in mind, take note of how secure the playpen is once set up and if it poses any risk of being pushed over by little escape artists. Dr. Gummer notes that across both wood and mesh designs, correct assembly, a stable footprint, adherence to height/weight limits and ongoing inspection (especially of joints/latches/mesh) are more important than the material itself.
  • Padding. Many baby playpens don’t come with a mat or a padded floor. If that’s the case, Dr. Phillips-Walker recommends lining the bottom with a one-inch firm mattress or pad. Moreover, she suggests you look for padding on the tops of the rails to protect your baby from bumps.
  • Recalls. Lastly, double-check that the brand and model haven’t been recalled on the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) website before purchasing, advises Dr. Cody.

Choosing the right size playpen

One of the main concerns you’re going to have when shopping for a baby playpen is size. And according to Dr. Grummer, it’s worth going for something bigger than you might expect, particularly when it comes to floor space. Her rule of thumb: Choose the largest footprint you can safely accommodate, and keep the interior relatively uncluttered.

  • For crawling: Babies need enough room to take multiple consecutive crawling sequences, not just a shuffle or two.
  • For cruising: Babies need a continuous perimeter they can hold and a clear interior they can turn around in.

A playpen that’s too small or too packed with toys (built-in or loose) ends up as a holding area rather than a movement space.

What else should I look for in a baby playpen?

In addition to a playpen’s size, survey respondents from The Bump community highlighted the ability to easily see and watch their child and escape-proof designs as the top elements they considered when choosing a baby playpen for their household.

Image: The Bump

Playpens vs. Playards: What’s the Difference?

Playpens and playards both offer secure spaces for children, but they serve different purposes. The main difference is that playards are rated for overnight sleep, while playpens are solely designed as play areas.

Practically speaking, that means playpens prioritize floor space—room to crawl, cruise and play—while playards prioritize versatility, often serving as a portable space where children can both play and sleep. They tend to be smaller in size than playpens, but their dual-purpose design adds convenience and flexibility, catering to a variety of parenting needs.

Thinking a playard is more your speed? See the five rigorously tested playards that made the cut for easy side access, newborn support and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much space do babies need in a playpen?

There isn't a single evidence-based magic number, but the basic answer? Aim for bigger than you'd think. “If a baby can only do one or two movements before bumping into a side, the space is doing less for gross motor practice,” Dr. Gummer, a child development expert, explains. For crawling, you want enough room for multiple consecutive crawling sequences. For cruising, you want a continuous perimeter to hold and enough interior space to turn, squat and re-orient without constant collisions. Choose the largest footprint you can safely accommodate and keep the interior relatively uncluttered, with just a small rotation of toys.

Is one type of playpen safer than another?

Not really—Dr. Gummer says the differences between wooden panel playpens and mesh or fabric ones are mostly about stability, visibility and specific hazard profiles, not overall safety.

Wooden playpens tend to feel sturdier, but you'll want to watch for gaps, pinch points and latch integrity. Mesh designs offer better airflow and visibility but can develop sagging sides over time that become a climbing assist for older babies.

Across both types, Dr. Gummer says correct assembly, a stable footprint, adherence to height/weight limits and ongoing inspection are more important than the material itself.

Can I put my newborn in a playpen?

Yes, with the right setup, a playpen can be appropriate for supervised awake time with a newborn, Dr. Gummer says. The most important thing is a firm, flat surface—no soft padding, pillows, loose blankets or bulky positioning aids. Keep the space clear of loose items and dangling toys at face level. And always remember, playpens are not safe for sleep.

How long can my baby be in a playpen?

There's no universal time limit, but the test is more about how it fits into your child's broader day than how many minutes are on the clock. Dr. Gummer recommends thinking of the playpen as a tool for “short, purposeful periods (e.g., when a caregiver needs both hands for cooking, toileting another child or answering the door),” while still making time for plenty of free floor exploration outside it. If baby is consistently protesting, trying to escape or seems dysregulated, that's usually a sign to stretch them out and reset.
