In a nutshell:
Based on first-hand testing from nine different families and advice from two pediatricians, we chose UPPAbaby’s Mamaroo Smart Swing as the overall best baby swing. Its unusually wide range of motions, smart features and whisper-quiet operation genuinely soothed our tester’s colicky baby—the ultimate test of a swing’s effectiveness.

As a mom of two, I’ll be honest—baby swings are one of those baby gear items that can feel like a total gamble. I remember scrolling through Amazon with my first, overwhelmed by the options and terrified I’d drop hundreds of dollars on something my baby would hate. But here’s what I’ve learned after using a baby swing countless times over the past four years with two babies: a good swing can be an absolute lifesaver. When I just really needed a moment and two hands, the right swing gave me that precious time to give my arms a break, unload the dishwasher or even take my newly potty-trained toddler to the bathroom. It’s not a magic solution—no baby product is—but when it works, it really works.

Keep in mind that every baby responds to motion differently. “Most I find like side to side or up and down, but there is no one ‘it’ motion,” explains Dina DiMaggio Walters, MD, a board-certified pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics. That’s exactly why having options matters—and why we made sure to test swings with a variety of motion settings and features in this roundup.

This article covers baby swings, which are used for soothing and calming babies. If you’re looking for a bouncer, which is used primarily to give an alert and engaged baby a place to sit, check out our roundup of the best baby bouncers.

How We Tested and Chose the Best Baby Swings

Image: Katelyn T., Amber W., Aubrey A.

To find the best baby swings for parents across a wide variety of lifestyles:

  • We tested nine baby swings with nine different parent testers, all with babies ranging from newborn to 5 months old. Each tester used their swing in their everyday routine—while getting chores done, traveling and when baby needed soothing.
  • We intentionally sourced parent testers with specific real-life needs, including families with pets, older toddlers and limited space. Swings were tested in apartments, smaller homes and busy households where pets and siblings were present during everyday use, and carefully matched the right families to right products based on their needs.
  • We evaluated each swing across eight key criteria: ease of use, portability and storage, motion quality, additional features, baby’s reaction, design and quality, ease of cleaning and value for money.
  • We used a 1–10 scoring system to rate each category, then calculated overall scores to create our shortlist of the top five products.
  • We selected our final picks based on overall performance, prioritizing swings that consistently scored well across testing criteria, had features that address distinct family needs and delivered the best value for parents.
  • We conducted expert interviews with two board-certified pediatricians, to understand safety considerations and what features truly matter when choosing a swing.
  • We performed extensive market research, scouring parent forums, social media and community reviews to see how these swings performed for families across the country in real-world conditions.

Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.

The Best Baby Swings to Shop

Overall best baby swing

UPPAbaby Mamaroo Smart Swing
Image: Pottery Barn Kids
What We Love
  • Five unique, parent-mimicking motions
  • Whisper-quiet operation
  • Smart features with lock function
  • Recline from 25° to 45°
Things To Consider
  • Higher price point
  • Not foldable for storage

When I first heard about the Mamaroo—which you may know as the 4moms Mamaroo, the company was acquired by UPPAbaby in 2025—it seemed like every parent forum was buzzing about it—most loved it, some were skeptical. So when we had the chance to test it, I was curious to see if it lived up to the hype—and for our tester Katelyn, mom of an 11-week-old, it absolutely did.

First, what sets the Mamaroo apart from other baby swings is its five distinct motions—cruise, bounce, sway, rock and wave—that are designed to mimic the natural movements parents make when soothing their babies. Most swings we saw in our research and testing have a much more limited range of movement. “I like how it seems to mimic the 'Mom bounce' more than a lot of swings or bouncers will,” Katelyn shares. Her baby has been on the colicky side, so finding something that actually worked was huge. “There were some times that we set her in the swing and she didn’t tolerate it well, but other times when she wasn’t as fussy, she really liked it,” she explains. During one session, Katelyn set her fussy baby in the swing while making a bottle, expecting crying the whole time. Instead? Her little one settled and happily sat for 20 minutes. That’s a major win in our book!

Image: Katelyn T.

Beyond the motion options, the Mamaroo is loaded with thoughtful features. Katelyn was particularly impressed with the lock feature on the swing, which prevents older siblings from constantly changing the settings. (If you have a curious toddler, you know exactly why this matters!) The swing connects via Bluetooth to the UPPAbaby app, Alexa or Google Home, so you can even adjust settings with voice commands or without getting up—something I definitely could have used for my first two in the haze of newborn stages.

In terms of comfort and quality, this swing fully delivers. The seat includes a newborn insert and offers a deep recline from 25 to 45 degrees, which is especially helpful for babies dealing with reflux. Plus, the fabric is easy to wipe down after spit-ups, and the whole thing zips off for machine washing. Katelyn also praised how quiet the swing is, saying, “I could hardly hear any noises at all unless I was sitting directly next to the Mamaroo.”

The one thing to note? This is a premium product with a premium price tag. But our tester felt it was worth every penny. “The sturdiness, the aesthetics, the variety of seat positions, motions, speeds, sounds and functions really justifies the pricing,” she tells us. If you’re looking for a swing that offers the most soothing options and genuinely effective features, the Mamaroo earns its spot as our overall best.

Type: Floor-based swing | Dimensions: 24" (L) x 21" (W) x 27" (H) | Weight: 15 lbs. | Weight Capacity: 25 lbs. | Foldable?: No | Power Source: Plug-in | Smart Features?: Yes

Our product tester says:
“I would absolutely recommend this baby swing to other parents—The Mamaroo offers a lot of different positions and settings to where I could find things even my fussy baby liked. It is sturdy and high quality, so it is likely to last through multiple children.”

Best budget-friendly baby swing

Ingenuity Comfort 2 Go Portable Swing
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Lowest price of any swing we tested
  • Relatively lightweight
  • Folds flat for easy storage
  • Machine-washable seat pad
Things To Consider
  • Basic front-to-back motion only
  • Battery-powered only

Let’s be real—baby gear adds up fast, and not everyone has a couple of hundred dollars to drop on a swing that their baby might outgrow in a few months. That’s where the Ingenuity Comfort 2 Go comes in. At under $75, it’s the most affordable swing we tested—and it still delivers where it counts.

Our product tester Terriannah, mom of a 2-month-old, was impressed with how much this budget-friendly swing offered. She says this Ingenuity baby swing is an “overall great swing for what it’s used for.” Assembly was a breeze, taking just six minutes without any tools— the seven included pieces snap together easily, and Terriannah was set up and swinging quickly. But the standout feature here is the motion quality. Despite its lower price, the Comfort 2 Go offers smooth, consistent front-to-back swinging with six speed settings. “I love how smooth it is in its rocking motion,” Terriannah says. Her 12-pound daughter settled in nicely at speed three, which mimicked the gentle rocking motion she was used to. Although, it’s worth noting that for heavier babies, you might need to bump up the speed to compensate for more weight.

Image: Terriannah D.

Portability is another area where this swing really shines. Weighing in at under 7 pounds, it’s one of the lightest swings we tested. And the A-frame design folds flat with just two button presses, making it easy to stash in a closet or take to grandma’s house. Terriannah loved being able to use it anywhere in her home and when visiting family.

Of course, as with any budget-friendly baby swing, there are some tradeoffs due to price point. The Comfort 2 Go is a straightforward A-frame design, which means you’re limited to front-to-back motion—no side-to-side or multi-directional options here. It also runs exclusively on batteries (nope, no plug-in), and the timer settings are fairly basic. But if you need a reliable, no-frills swing that won’t break the bank, this is a solid choice.

Type: A-frame | Dimensions: 26.8" (L) x 29.1" (W) x 22.8" (H) | Weight: 6.7 lbs. | Weight Capacity: 6 to 20 lbs. | Foldable?: Yes | Power Source: Battery | Smart Features?: No

Our product tester says:
“The price is perfect and I would buy it.”

Best baby swing for families with toddlers and pets

Bright Starts Disney Winnie The Pooh Classic Pals Milestone Swing
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Elevated seat height keeps baby away from pets & siblings
  • Easy on your back for putting baby in and out
  • Stable frame, but not too heavy
  • Adorable vintage Winnie the Pooh theme
Things To Consider
  • Battery-only
  • Front-to-back-only
  • No seat lock when swing is off
  • Lap toy bar doesn’t pivot

If you’ve got a curious toddler or pets who just have to investigate everything, you know the struggle of finding a safe spot for baby. I personally had two large dogs to account for when my daughter was in the swinging stage, and they would lick her face uncontrollably anytime she was down at their height. The Bright Starts Milestone Swing stands out because of its elevated seat height, creating a buffer between your newborn and their loving—but sometimes overly enthusiastic—siblings and furry friends.

Our tester Lauren, mom of a 5-month-old, two dogs, and a curious 2-and-a-half-year-old, found this feature to be the swing’s biggest advantage. “The height of the seat kept baby out of their direct paths, and therefore she was able to sit quietly on her own without them being totally in her face,” she explains. The elevated design also saved her back—a huge plus for any parent dealing with the constant bending that comes with baby gear. “When I put baby in the swing and found that I could be seated on the floor and still sit up straight, I was delighted!” Lauren shares. She also found the height convenient in the kitchen, where she could make eye contact with her baby even over the countertops.

The A-frame design keeps baby securely contained within the footprint of the base, and the legs extend the full length of the swing’s movement, so there’s no wobbling at any speed setting. “For how light the swing is, my husband and I were both surprised at how sturdy the base is,” she noted. Another plus? It’s virtually silent while in motion.

Image: Lauren D.

The swing offers six speed settings with traditional front-to-back motion, controlled by a simple button panel that’s easy enough for sleep-deprived parents to figure out. Lauren appreciated that even her toddler could safely press the buttons without causing any harm—all speed levels felt safe and controlled the entire time. The vintage Winnie the Pooh theme is a sweet touch that works for any nursery style, and the two toy bars (one overhead for looking, one at lap level for touching) kept her baby entertained.

There are a few small drawbacks worth mentioning. The swing runs on C batteries only—no plug-in option. Lauren also wished for a seat lock mechanism to keep the swing stable when not turned on, and a lap toy bar that could pivot instead of needing to be removed entirely to get baby in and out. But overall, if pet and sibling safety is your top concern, this swing strikes the right balance between height, stability and functionality.

Type: A-frame | Dimensions: 23.8" (L) x 36.6" (W) x 37" (H) | Weight: 9.6 lbs. | Weight Capacity: 20 lbs. | Foldable?: Yes | Power Source: 4 C batteries (not included) | Smart Features?: No

Our product tester says:
“I would recommend this swing to any parents who want an option of a higher-seated swing for their infant. For all those parents who feel their backs breaking with every bend, this seat provides such a welcome relief! For parents who have curious pets and/or determined siblings, this chair provides an extra safety buffer for baby.”

Best baby swing for moving room-to-room

What We Love
  • Built-in wheels for easy room-to-room mobility
  • Color-changing light show and mirror
  • Remote control included
  • Machine-washable seat and infant insert
Things To Consider
  • Large footprint even when folded
  • Harness straps may max out for bigger babies

Picture this—You put your baby down in the living room swing, just to realize you need to be in the kitchen. Do you take baby out with one hand and move the swing with the other? Or just give up entirely to keep baby cozy and content? With built-in wheels on both legs that make it effortless to roll from room to room, the Ingenuity Inlighten is your solution—no lifting or disturbing baby required. You'd think this would be a more common feature—it appears on baby gear like playards and bassinets all the time—but it was actually unique among swings we tested.

Our tester Amber, mom of a 9-week-old, found this feature to be a game-changer. “Moving it from room to room was very easy,” she tells us. At 9 pounds, it's about average weight for a swing, but they're not generally considered lightweight products. Amber adds, “The swing is heavy to lift and tall, so it makes it awkward to carry—the wheels were very handy.” She used the swing in her living room, bedroom and family room, pushing it wherever she needed to be throughout the day. I can relate-–I specifically remember awkwardly dragging my sturdy, non-rollable baby swing around my home.

Image: Amber W.

Beyond mobility, this swing is also packed with entertaining features. The overhead mobile includes a mirror (which Amber’s baby absolutely loved), color-changing lights and two hanging toys. “The first time I put my baby in the swing she instantly looked up at the mirror,” Amber shares. “She really enjoys looking at herself!” The combination of lights and mirror kept her baby’s attention longer than other swings they’d tried. There’s also a vibration mode for extra soothing, which Amber’s baby enjoyed while swinging.

The Ingenuity Inlighten operates with smooth side-to-side motion across five speed settings, all controllable via the included remote—yep, you can adjust everything from across the room without disturbing your baby. Our tester found speed three to be the sweet spot, and noted that the motion was excellent at soothing her baby to sleep. “Whenever we used it, she was soothed to the point of falling asleep,” Amber reports.

She did note that this swing has a larger footprint, and even when folded, it takes up considerable space. So this option might not be ideal for travel or smaller apartments. But if room-to-room mobility with a newborn is your priority and you have the space, this feature-packed swing delivers.

Type: Hangs from top | Dimensions: 35.8" (L) x 34.25” (W) x 38.6" (H) | Weight: 9 lbs. | Weight Capacity: 20 lbs. | Foldable?: Yes | Power Source: Plug-in (USB cord included) - battery needed for vibration | Smart Features?: No

Our product tester says:
“I really like that this swing has wheels on both legs so moving it from room to room was very easy.”

Best baby swing for travel

What We Love
  • Breaks down into two flat pieces in under a minute
  • Lighter than average weight
  • Whisper-quiet operation
  • Bluetooth speaker for streaming
Things To Consider
  • Mobile sold separately
  • Lower to the ground

If you’re a family on the go—whether you're visiting grandparents, taking weekend trips or just need to move your setup between homes—the Munchkin Swing was designed with you in mind. With a below-average weight and a design that breaks down into two flat pieces when not in use, this is the most travel-friendly swing we tested.

Our tester Aubrey, mom of a 2-month-old, was genuinely shocked at how easy this swing was to set up and take apart. “When I received the package, I almost didn’t open it until my husband came home since I’m not very handy when it comes to putting things together,” she admits, adding, “OH MY GOSH, was I in legit shock how easy it was to put together—Literally only two pieces and attaches so easily!” No tools required with this one—just snap it together in about two minutes and you’re good to go. And when it was time to take it apart for transport, it was just as simple. “I’ve already taken it with me to a family member's house, and it fit great inside my car,” Aubrey shares. The swing’s compact breakdown makes it genuinely packable, unlike other swings that technically “fold down” but still take up half your trunk. There’s even a locking switch on the back that keeps the seat from swinging if you need to move it from room to room, so you can easily carry the entire swing with one hand. “I think this swing is so portable. I will 100% be taking this swing with us when traveling,” Aubrey says.

Image: Aubrey A.

The Munchkin Swing features a gentle side-to-side sway motion with five speed settings, and Aubrey’s baby loved the lowest setting the best—slowly moving but still providing that soothing motion babies crave. What impressed Aubrey most, though? “It is SILENT! Can’t get over how good this swing is,” she raves.

Image: Aubrey A.

Design-wise, this swing is sleek and modern, with a soft, comfortable seat that kept her baby content and even made the occasional diaper blowout easier to clean up. “I’ve had to take the inserts out and wash them, and I had absolutely no problem taking anything apart and putting it back together.”

The included Bluetooth speaker also lets you stream music from your phone if your baby prefers something other than those typical ambient background noises. One thing to note is that the hanging mobile is sold separately, and the lower-to-the-ground design might not be ideal if you have pets. But for travel-focused families, this is the swing to beat.

Type: Floor-based swing | Dimensions: 23.6” (L) x 23.6” (W) x 15” (H) | Weight: 8.6 lbs. | Weight Capacity: 5 to 20 lbs. | Foldable?: Yes (breaks down into two pieces) | Power Source: Plug-in | Smart Features?: No

Our product tester says:
“Being able to take this swing apart in literally less than one minute is crazy amazing to me. Once dismantled it’s even lighter and two pieces that lay completely flat.”

What to Consider When Shopping for a Baby Swing

There are tons of great swings to choose from on the market—from high-tech Bluetooth-enabled designs that sway in multiple motions to basic models that get the job done with less flair. You might be tempted to buy the first one you come across, especially if you’re not sure what baby will like yet. But before you make a decision, keep these factors in mind:

  • Safety features. This should always be your top priority. “The swing should be sturdy and not tip over or fold up easily,” advises DiMaggio. Look for a swing with a stable base and a secure three- or five-point safety harness. If the seat can move to more than a 50-degree angle, it should have shoulder straps to keep baby secure and prevent falls, adds DiMaggio. Also, make sure any included toys are securely attached and don’t have removable parts that could be choking hazards. Another important step: Check if the model you’re considering has been recently recalled before purchasing.
  • Cost. For a non-essential item, baby swings can be surprisingly expensive—ranging from around $75 for a basic swing to over $300 for a model with all the bells and whistles. Remember that your little one may only use it for a short window. Check the height and weight limits to determine how long you’ll actually get use out of it before investing in a high-end option.
  • Comfort. You can spend a small fortune on a swing, but if baby doesn’t like the seat they’re sitting in, their swing time will be short-lived. That’s the thing with swings: babies either love them or they don’t, and there’s really no way to know until you try. Make sure the materials are soft and breathable, the straps are secure but not uncomfortable, and there are no itchy, irritating seams or tags.
  • Portability. Baby should never be left unattended in a swing, so unless you want to be confined to one room, portability matters. The best baby swings are lightweight and easy to move around the house—whether that means wheels, a fold-flat design or a compact footprint.
  • Motion options. Different babies respond to different types of movement. “It simply depends on the baby and what the baby finds comforting,” explains DiMaggio. Swings with multiple motion options give you more chances to find what works for your little one.

How to Use a Baby Swing Safely

It’s true that baby swings can be lifesavers. But they do need to be used properly. Keep these safety tips in mind when assembling and using your baby swing:

  • Setup. First, read the instruction manual carefully before assembly. Make sure to securely attach any toys that come with the swing, and never add your own toys, as these can pose a safety hazard. “Toys shouldn’t be able to be removed easily or have any removable parts that can be a choking hazard,” notes DiMaggio.
  • Placement. Place your baby swing on a flat area of the floor, away from reachable windows, blind cords, electrical outlets, power cords and heavy furniture. Also keep it out of foot traffic areas and never place it on an elevated surface like a table or countertop. And DiMaggio reiterates, “the baby should always be monitored in it.”
  • Recline setting. The ability to adjust the incline of the seat is an important safety feature. Infants under 4 months old should be in a more reclined position because they haven’t yet developed the head and neck muscles to sit up, says Loretta Cody, MD, a board-certified pediatrician based out of Greenwich, Connecticut. “You always want to make sure a baby’s neck is stable and not bending forward at all in one of these devices, which can lead to the airway being compromised,” DiMaggio adds.
  • Time limits. “Short sessions are better, and a baby should never sleep in one,” advises DiMaggio. Cody also suggests keeping swing time to less than an hour a day, which can be split into shorter sessions throughout the day.

Can babies sleep in a swing?

The short answer: No. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises parents against using infant swings for sleeping babies. “If the baby falls asleep in a swing, the baby should be moved to a firm sleep surface as soon as possible,” DiMaggio says.

This is especially important for infants under 4 months old. The AAP cautions that babies this age should be seated in the swing’s most reclined position to avoid slumping over and suffocating. And even in a reclined position, swings are not safe sleep environments. If baby dozes off while swinging, transfer them to their crib or another appropriate flat surface as soon as it’s safe and practical. And remember: always supervise baby when they’re in a swing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if baby doesn't take to a swing?

The truth is, sometimes a swing can be perfectly fine, and baby just won’t like it. “Kids have different tastes, just like adults—my daughter couldn't stand swings, she fussed the whole time she was in them,” shares Daniel C., dad of one and associate director of e-commerce content for The Bump.

And if your baby doesn’t seem to enjoy the swing either, don’t stress. DiMaggio reassures parents that a swing can be expensive and is not a needed item, so don’t worry if baby doesn’t take to it. Not every baby is a swing baby, and that’s completely okay.

What are the risks of over-using a swing?

While swings can be helpful for giving parents a break and soothing a fussy baby, it’s important not to rely on them too much. The AAP cautions that a baby’s head can become flat if they stay in one position for too long on a consistent basis. They also remind parents that babies should be doing tummy time during waking hours—you don’t want to skip important developmental opportunities by keeping baby in the swing for extended periods.
