Does the Toniebox 2 Live Up to the Hype? One Mom’s Honest Review
In a nutshell:
The Toniebox 2 is a fun, screen-free audio player built to inspire independent play. The use of adorable tonies toys for audio play impressed me and my preschooler during testing, and the new model’s interactive games and smart bedtime features offer real upgrades over the original.
As a mom of two young children, I know the struggle of finding screen-free entertainment that actually holds my kids’ attention. When I first tested the original Toniebox with my 3-year-old daughter, we were instantly hooked—yes, both of us. Now, six months later, we’ve had the chance to put the new Toniebox 2 through a full trial, and I’m here to let you know if its new features are worth your time and money.
About the Toniebox 2
- Easy-to-play design
- Toddler-proof padded bumper outside
- Tonies double as fun toys
- Helpful bedtime features
- Needs a hard whack to change stories
- Limited content for older kids
The Toniebox 2 is an interactive audio player, designed to give kids hours of entertainment that doesn't involve staring at a screen. All you do is set a special tonies toy on top of the player, and children can immediately listen to their favorite stories and songs. The controls on the Toniebox are simple enough for younger kids to use all on their own, with cute ears to pinch for volume control and tapping the side of the box to change playlists. It's also ultra-padded, huggable and durable for rough toddler life.
How do Tonies work?
Tonies, which are sold separately, are hard plastic figurines that perfectly fit in the palm of a toddler's hand. Each tonie quickly snaps on top of the Toniebox when it's near the player's pad, like a magnet. As soon as your Tonie connects with the player, the audio will play. When you lift a tonie off the player, the audio stops. The Toniebox 2 starter kit comes with a free playtime puppy tonie, which has 45 minutes of popular kids’ songs, and additional tonies—including classic kids’ movies and shows, songs, bedtime stories and some educational content, designed for ages 1 to 8—can be purchased as add-on content.
With a special type of tonie called “creative tonies,” you can record your own audio. Creative tonies are essentially blank tonie toys on which you can record up to 90 minutes of your personal recordings. They’re great for capturing bedtime stories from grandparents, parents saying sweet messages or your kid’s favorite songs. You can control this recording seamlessly through the Toniebox parent app. Just open up the app, click record and send the final recording to your creative tonie, all in minutes.
What new features were added to the Toniebox 2?
The recently-released Toniebox 2 brings several game-changing updates, transforming it from a simple audio player into an interactive entertainment hub. The standout addition is the new Tonieplay feature—interactive games that use special discs and a controller to create screen-free gaming experiences.
Beyond that major update, there's a new colorful light ring that displays battery life and volume level while also creating ambient lighting, a sleep timer with sunset simulation, a sunrise alarm clock, expanded storage (a whopping 32GB vs the old 8GB), Bluetooth connectivity and perhaps most exciting for parents—USB-C charging that ditches the big bulky charging base of the original Toniebox.
My daughter and I tested both versions of the Toniebox, roughly six months apart—we really wanted to get the full picture! This meant:
- My 3-year-old and I first used the original Toniebox several times, mixing it into our daily routine. We used the audio players during the day while my daughter played, and at night before bed, to test it across different scenarios.
- Six months later, we repeated the process with the Toniebox 2, paying special attention to the new features like Tonieplay.
- We tested with multiple tonies, including classic characters like Spiderman and Chase from Paw Patrol, plus the new Tonieplay games like Disney Quiz Kingdom and Winnie the Pooh: Tigger’s Mix-Up Fix-Up. My daughter and I also tested the creative tonie feature by recording our family’s voices.
- I rated both Tonieboxes across multiple categories—including ease of use, play and entertainment, quality of content, durability, my child’s reaction, value and overall experience—on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the worst possible score and 10 being the best. We then combined my ratings with extensive research by our in-house editorial team to share this full-scale product review.

Getting started
Right out of the box, the Toniebox 2 impressed me with its streamlined setup. A QR code sat right on top of the packaging—no digging through instruction manuals required. Following the prompts to connect to Wi-Fi and download the parent app, I had the entire player up and running in about three minutes flat, which was crucial since my daughter was hovering impatiently the entire time. The moment the setup finished, she started playing with it immediately by simply placing a tonie on top.
I really appreciated one particular thoughtful safety feature on the Toniebox 2: during setup, it asks your child’s age. If they’re three or older, the device can play audio while charging. For younger children, it won’t play while plugged in—a smart safety precaution I appreciate as a mom of littles who like to play with cords.
As my daughter played, the parent app walked me through all the controls: pinch the ears for volume, whack the side to change stories and tilt to fast-forward or rewind. My 3-year-old caught on quickly and now operates it completely independently. I’ll be honest though, the firm “whack” you need to change stories on the tonies is tricky. It requires some force—sometimes my daughter needs a few tries, and occasionally the tonies go flying. For kids 4 and older, this probably won’t be an issue, but it’s something to keep in mind for younger players. This was the case on the original Toniebox, and it carries over to the Toniebox 2.
The creative tonie voice recorder feature was surprisingly simple—you record using your phone directly in the parent app, and it sends the audio straight to the tonie. My daughter absolutely melted when she heard her own voice playing through the speaker. Thankfully, you get 90 whole minutes on the creative tonie to record whatever her heart desires! (And you can delete old content through the app if you want to clear up space.)
All in all, my daughter was so excited to use the Toniebox. When she first opened it, she immediately started playing with all the tonies toys. She brought them to her toybox, joined them with her other toys and played with them all together. The funny part is, this was all before she even knew there were actual stories on them. And she literally screeched when she saw the Tonie figurines of her favorite characters. I can still hear her yell, “It’s Spider-Man!” as clear as day in my head. We listen to the creative tonie recordings we made all the time, and add family messages to them. Seriously—whenever someone new comes over, they’re added to the creative tonie playlist. Plus, my daughter even had me help record her favorite Moana song on the creative tonie. It’s neat to see her grasp how this all works and start doing it independently.
Tucking into the play features
From the moment she opened her Toniebox, my toddler has been obsessed with it. The fact that she can put her favorite character toys on top of the player so easily to listen to their stories is the best. She loves turning it on in the background while playing during the day—there’s constant popping on and off of tonies as she shuffles through her favorite audio clips. My daughter also physically plays with the tonies, too—to the point where they are now mixed in with all the other toybox toys.
The audio content selection on Toniebox’s website is mainly popular kids’ movies and shows from Disney, Pixar and DreamWorks. But some tonies also have lullabies, interactive audio games and popular songs. There are a handful of educational tonies that teach kids about different animals, but the options for education are kind of slim. The tonies selection seems to be geared toward younger kids, which is perfect for us right now. But I do think she would only use her Toniebox for a couple more years and possibly grow out of it before 7 years old, unless more educational and older kid content is added.
But for the age she’s at, the Toniebox stories are truly top-tier quality. They’re a mixture of narrated stories and actual voices from TV shows and movies. Our Nemo tonie, for example, talks us through the story of the movie Finding Nemo and adds in actual voice clips from the film. It’s really neat! I will note that some tonies—like the Finding Nemo one—come with music on them, too. Which isn’t bad, there are just more music tracks on the playlist than I’d like to see. I personally think kids crave more of the story content, since they can listen to music elsewhere. Although that may just be my daughter—she just skips through all the songs and goes straight to the stories. But the good news is there’s a lot of options, you can gauge your kid’s preference, and pick your tonies based on whether they’re story- or music-based. And what’s more, the tonies are retro-compatible—our entire collection of tonies we got for the original Toniebox works seamlessly with the Toniebox 2. Every character, every story, every recording transfers over without any extra steps. Just place them on the player, and they work like normal.
But this upgraded audio player also adds something mind-blowing: Tonieplay functionality, screen-free games your child can play through the Toniebox 2. This genius addition allows you to purchase special discs that slide right over the box’s ears, creating an interactive board, while a Tonieplay controller sits on top as a toggle for making game choices. You do need to buy the controller separately, but it’s a one-time purchase that can be used with any of the game discs. And the controller and games are worth the investment—this single feature alone has extended my daughter’s independent playtime by at least 30 minutes at a time over the original version of the Toniebox. Just the other day, she spent an hour playing the Disney quiz game entirely on her own—this mom was thrilled!
The Tonieplay games really work beautifully for both solo and collaborative play. When friends visit or when she wants to include her ol’ mom and dad, these games transform into family game night activities. My husband and I have already played through all the games with her, and it genuinely feels like quality family time—what a bonus!
What else does the Toniebox 2 offer?
The new features on the Toniebox 2 transform this audio player from a fun toy into an all-day companion. When my daughter first saw the new light ring on the Toniebox 2, her eyes went wide. She loves watching it change colors. But this new light ring isn’t just decorative—it displays battery life and volume levels, works with Tonieplay game boards and creates ambient lighting for a peaceful bedtime routine.
When it’s time to wind down and turn on the Toniebox 2’s new sleep timer, the light ring glows a deep sunset orange that slowly fades as bedtime hits. And if a story is playing, the volume gently decreases until the bedtime timer expires and everything powers down peacefully. My daughter now loves falling asleep to her Toniebox 2.
Surprisingly, the sunrise alarm has also become a hit. Setting her daily wake-up time through the app takes seconds, and unexpectedly, she springs out of bed happy when her gentle morning song plays. For a 3-year-old who’s never had her own alarm clock, this felt like a major milestone. She actually gets excited about bedtime now because she loves waking up to her special big girl alarm.
The parent app itself makes using these features simple. Beyond basic controls, it lets me manage multiple Tonieboxes—we still have our original for baby brother—adjust individual settings for each player—like maximum volume and brightness for the light ring—and record creative tonie content super easily. And on top of that, the Toniebox 2’s newly expanded 32GB storage means we never worry about running out of space—it’s a massive upgrade from the original 8GB.
The best part of it all is that my almost-one-year-old son is already starting to engage with the Toniebox thanks to the new My First Tonies launch—soft, squeezable characters designed for tiny hands. Watching him realize that placing them on the player produces sounds is magical. The lower age rating (now 1+ instead of 3+) feels appropriate given these gentler, baby-friendly options.
How well does the Toniebox 2 hold up?
Here’s the great news: The Toniebox 2 is extremely durable. The player itself has a built-in padded cover around it, so you don’t need to buy an extra case. It’s like a big bumper pad around the entire box. I can even see it being dropped from kitchen counter height many times and still surviving as new. In my eyes, this thoughtfulness surrounding durability makes it perfect for toddlers.
Even the volume-control ears that stick up on top of the player are tough rubber quality. They feel like they won’t get damaged, ever. I’m confident this toy will last through childhood until your kids eventually grow out of it. Not to mention, while the Toniebox itself is not waterproof, the tonies characters are, which is fantastic. I’d be lying if I said my daughter’s tonies haven’t already taken a swim in the bath. Update—they still work!
Is the Toniebox 2 worth it?
For parents wondering if the Toniebox 2 justifies its roughly $120 price tag, my answer is absolutely yes. It proved to be an amazing screen-free player for my preschooler. It has all the trendy Disney movies, popular kids’ TV shows, classic songs and a handful of educational content. Plus, the tonies characters themselves are so cute and fun for kids. And now with the upgraded Toniebox 2, it takes that same foundation and adds features that genuinely enhance daily life—from interactive games that extend playtime to bedtime routines that make evenings much smoother.
But the real question is, should you upgrade to the Toniebox 2 if you already have the original Toniebox? Well, the great news is, if you’re transitioning from the original version of Toniebox, your existing tonies will work perfectly with the new version. And personally, all the new features that come with Toniebox 2 seem to match up great with my daughter’s growing interests as she gets older—too fast, I might add. So I say yes, it’s worth it to upgrade. However, if you’re perfectly happy with your original Toniebox and your child is engaged with it, you might wait until they’re ready for the slightly older-kid interactive games or when they could benefit from the alarm features.
Here’s the bottom line: My daughter’s initial reaction to the Toniebox 2 was priceless, I’d gift it again to her in a heartbeat. Seeing her face light up when she plays with her Toniebox 2 makes it worth every penny. The combination of familiar character toys, quality audio content, extended independent play through Tonieplay games, and helpful daily routine features creates something truly special. The Toniebox 2 doesn’t just live up to the hype—it exceeds it!
