The Ultimate Second Baby Registry, According to Experts (and a Mom)

Here’s exactly what you need for your second baby registry—according to a pediatrician, a baby gear consultant and a mom of two.

As a mom of two boys, I’ve been down the registry road twice now, and I know just how overwhelming it can be. A close friend of mine who was recently pregnant with her first child asked me, “Where do I start?” and I was glad to share some recommendations and the products that truly support new moms. But honestly, putting together a baby registry for a second child can feel even more challenging. What do I actually need that I don’t already have? Which items can I safely reuse, and which have to be replaced?

Rebekah Kimminau, CPST, a babywearing educator and baby gear consultant, notes that the first registry is usually filled with must-haves, while “the second registry is often ‘nice to have’ or more convenience items that you’ve discovered might be helpful. I also find that second registry items are more curated toward the parents’ parenting style, since they now know for the most part what works for them.” She also reminds parents, “The most common mistake I see is parents not making a registry for their second child… every baby deserves to be celebrated, and friends and family genuinely want to surround you with love and gift you things!”

To help answer the biggest questions around what truly needs replacing and what’s worth adding the second time around, I spoke with a pediatrician about safety and expiration dates and a baby gear expert about the essentials that make life easier with two kids. Drawing on years of product testing, in-depth gear knowledge, and plenty of real-life trial and error, I’ve also highlighted some of my favorite second baby registry ideas as a seasoned mom of two.

Second Baby Registry Sleep Essentials

Sleep setups change a lot when you add a second baby to the family, especially if your older child is still using their crib or their crib converted into a toddler bed. Some sleep items can be reused, but others should be replaced entirely for safety reasons. If you used a standard crib with your first child and it’s been sitting in the attic since they graduated to a big kid bed, good news: as long as it’s in good shape, it’s safe to reuse. Kimminau assures us, “if you have a larger age gap [between your children], you most likely will be able to reuse the crib from your first.” But if you used a convertible crib, then that crib is now a toddler bed and already has someone sleeping in it! So you’re going to need a new sleep space for baby number two.

Another item has less wiggle room: Alexis Phillips-Walker, DO, a pediatrician in Atascocita, Texas, notes that crib mattresses can become less firm over time and should be replaced if they’re more than five years old or show signs of wear. She says that crib mattresses “can break down and become soft over time, which increases SIDS risk.” She advises replacing one that’s more than five years old, has sagging or indentations, shows any mold or mildew, or was exposed to smoke. She further adds, “It is safest to replace a mattress even if the old one appears to be fine.”

Phillips-Walker further advises that, “for a second baby, anything that has been soiled by a previous child should be replaced.” Newborn skin is delicate, so any sleepwear that didn’t survive without a blowout is a must-replace—you can probably bank on needing new swaddles, at a minimum.

Lastly, there’s some new tech you’ll want to buy. Phillips-Walker says, “If your children are in two separate rooms, it might be worth considering getting a monitor with multiple cameras instead of two different monitors. A split screen monitor is one of the cycles between cameras and let you see both kids at once.” If you purchased a WiFi monitor, it can be as simple as buying a second device and pairing it to the same app. But if you’re the kind of parent who prefers a non-WiFi monitor, there are good two-camera options available. And speaking from my own experience, a portable sound machine is a must-have. You’re going to need to get baby’s naps in where you can, which might mean on the go, or while your toddler is being rambunctious nearby, and a small white noise machine you can take from place to place can be a life saver.

Convertible crib

Newton Galileo Convertible Crib

What We Love
  • Durable, solid design
  • Comes with a FREE mattress
  • Made of sustainable beechwood
Things To Consider
  • Assembly was easy for me, but some parents found it difficult

For my second child, I needed a new crib since my first convertible crib now lives at his dad’s house. I chose the Newton Baby Galileo Convertible Crib and was genuinely impressed not only by its sleek design but also by how easy it was to assemble. My dad and I put this together in no time! The quality feels premium and solid, giving me confidence that it will last through the toddler years and beyond. And the convertible design means it can grow with your child, transitioning from crib to toddler bed and beyond—I intend to convert it into a toddler bed once he turns three. This crib is a practical, long-term investment for a second baby registry.

Crib mattress

Newton Baby Crib Mattress

What We Love
  • Soft, quilted, removable cover
  • Fully washable
  • Very breathable
Things To Consider
  • Mattress may need to air out first

A new crib mattress wasn’t on my registry for my second child, but looking back, I wish I’d added it. My oldest spent most nights in my bed, and I assumed my newborn would mostly sleep in his brother's old bassinet—but I wound up needing a second mattress after all, and had to buy it myself. I chose this option from Newton, and I’m very pleased how breathable and comfortable it is. The removable, washable cover is a lifesaver, and the fact that the entire mattress is washable would have been a dream during my first child’s reflux phase.

Swaddles

What We Love
  • Womb-like four-way stretch
  • Durable fabric to hand down
  • Quality fits price point
Things To Consider
  • Only allows arms-up sleeping position
  • Does not grow with baby
  • Thin fabric not ideal for cold nights

My older child had bad reflux, and his swaddles were in no condition to be passed on to his little brother—they were one of the first things I replaced. The Love to Dream Swaddle Up is designed to allow babies to sleep with their arms up, promoting natural movement while maintaining a snug, secure fit. Made from breathable cotton with a 1.0 TOG rating, it’s suitable for most room temperatures and keeps babies comfortably warm without overheating. Product tester Nathalia R., a mom of two, used it with both her children and loved that it accommodated their natural sleep positions. “It has a very snug fit and because it doesn’t wrap, it doesn’t loosen during the night. Both of my children slept soundly and securely all night in these swaddles,” she reports.

Portable sound machine

Yogasleep Hushh 2
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Portable, sleek design
  • Easy to use one-handed
Things To Consider
  • Smaller range of sounds than other devices

Never did I need a portable sound machine more than I did during the early days with my second child. I loved using one at home when baby fell asleep on me, in the bassinet on our main level to drown out the noise of big brother playing and even during bassinet stroller naps on the go. This option from Yogasleep is an excellent option for your second baby registry. Our product tester Diana S. praised it for its portability: “Shaped and sized like a hockey puck, this machine was incredibly light and sleek.” She also noted that she could use the clip with just one hand. “This was super helpful to me as I’m usually juggling one thing or another (or kid).”

What We Love
  • Two high-res cameras
  • Easy-to-use split screen functionatliy
  • Remote pan, tilt and zoom
Things To Consider
  • Parent unit requires a five-hour charge to last 12 hours

For second-time parents, upgrading your baby monitor setup to support two rooms is essential, and as Kimminau explains, “For a monitor, ideally choose one that allows a second camera to connect to the same parent unit so you don't have to have two different parent units at all times.”

The Babysense Max View baby monitor comes with two cameras—which is not usual for a baby monitor—and has split screen capabilities that keep both children on screen at all times while switching the audio back and forth every 15 seconds. This monitor also happens to be a Best of The Bump winner for overall best non-WiFi baby monitor, and our product tester Janelle found the two-camera functionality easy to use. She tells us, "I never had to open the manual to switch to split-screen or adjust things like volume or the temperature display. With both cameras, I could monitor my nursery as well as the playroom, which was helpful since our nanny moves between the two during the day."

Second Registry Baby Travel Gear Essentials

Car seats are one of the most essential pieces of gear for any baby. Phillips-Walker says, “Car seats expire in 6 to 10 years from the manufacturer. Safety standards can also change." When deciding whether to reuse a car seat, determine whether the seat is still safe to use—the expiration date is printed directly on the seat or base, so it’s easy to find. But Phillips-Walker adds, "It is particularly important to discontinue use if it was involved in any crash, if it has expired, straps are frayed or missing any parts or labels.” Make sure your seat meets current safety standards, and inspect all straps, buckles, and labels before strapping baby in! If any of the above are a problem, you need a new car seat. And of course, if your first child used a convertible car seat that lasts through toddler years (or even converts to a booster seat that they’ll use until they’re a tween) you’ll need a new one no matter what, as the original is still in use.

When deciding whether to invest in a double stroller—and they’re not cheap, so it’s not a frivolous choice—Kimminau notes, “The factors that guide that decision are mainly the age and ability of the older child. Most children aren’t ready for a stroller board until 2 to 3 years of age, so if your first child is younger, you’ll likely need a double stroller. It also depends on your lifestyle and how often the older child still naps in the stroller.”

Kimminau also identifies one unexpected item that parents might not know they need for a second child: A baby carrier. “Baby carriers are the item that I find most second-time parents using and loving (even if they didn’t love them with their first child!). Usually this is due to necessity, chasing an older child or toddler around is so much easier with your baby close and your hands free.” Speaking from experience with my second child, I agree.

Convertible car seat

Car Seat Cybex Callisto Convertible Car Seat
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • 360-degree rotation
  • Extended rear-facing capability
  • Reinforced steel frame
  • SafeLock System with seat belt installation
Things To Consider
  • Heavier than some models
  • Installation tight in smaller cars

The Cybex Callisto G 360 Select Rotating All‑in‑One Car Seat is a top pick for parents who want a seat that grows with their child. Offering 360° rotation, it makes getting your baby in and out of the car much easier, especially when juggling two kids. With reinforced steel construction, an anti-rebound base and side-impact protection, it prioritizes safety at every stage.

Baby gear expert Kimminau recommends this seat, noting it as a great product that grows well with baby. And our product tester Christine B., mom of an 11-month-old, notes that “both of my children fit well in the Cybex Callisto G 360, and there was plenty of room for each of them based on their age and size.” She appreciates how the seat easily adapts for her “11-month-old and tall 3-year-old, adjusting smoothly to fit each child securely and comfortably.”

Double stroller

Bugaboo Donkey 5 Duo
Image: Bugaboo
What We Love
  • Narrow width (for what it is)
  • Easy and fast conversion from single to double mode
Things To Consider
  • Very pricey
  • Assembly can be time-consuming

Kimminau recommends “An easy-to-fold double stroller, that you can lift into your trunk [with] no issues,” and suggests the Bugaboo Donkey 5 Duo as a reliable option for second‑time parents. (It’s also a 2025 Best of The Bump winner, so we agree!) This versatile double stroller is a dream for parents expanding their families. It starts as a single stroller and converts to a side‑by‑side duo in just three quick clicks (trust us, you do not need to be fiddling with overcomplicated gear while juggling two kids!).

The Donkey 5 Duo glides easily with its all-wheel design, handles narrow doorways and offers plenty of adjustable storage features mom can appreciate, making it a must-have when your toddler is still riding, but your newborn still needs a seat. Our product tester, Sierra M., a mom of three, praised the Donkey's ease of folding, even though it required two hands to fold and unfold. “I love that you are [able] to fold the stroller up with seats still attached or take them off,” she says.

Baby carrier

Ergobaby Omni Deluxe All-in-One Baby Carrier
Image: Target
What We Love
  • Highly adjustable
  • Positioning lines on the straps and waistband for easy switching between caregivers
  • Six integrated storage pockets
Things To Consider
  • Not as many colors or patterns as other brands

Soft-structured carriers specifically were a lifesaver with my second child–they allowed me to manage contact naps and stay hands-free on busy outings, all while caring for my toddler. The Ergobaby Omni Deluxe is a top pick for second-time parents who want comfort, versatility and ease while babywearing. Our product tester, Tija A., says, “I love that it grows with baby and can be worn in multiple ways,” and we agree. With four carry positions (front inward, front outward, hip and back), the carrier grows with your child from newborn to toddler.

Cushioned shoulder straps, a sturdy waistband, and mesh fabric provide excellent lumbar support and breathability, making long walks and daily errands effortless. Adjustable straps with color-coded markings ensure a secure, ergonomic fit for multiple caregivers, while extra pockets for phone, keys and wallet simplify outings.

Second Baby Registry Feeding Essentials

When preparing a second baby registry, it’s important to take a close look at the feeding essentials you used every day with your first. Bottles are a great place to start. While glass bottles may only need new nipples, plastic bottles wear down faster. In fact, bottles made from polypropylene (the most common type of baby bottle plastic) should be replaced every three months, and even the longest-lasting type of plastic baby bottles, those made from polyphenylsulfone (PPSU) need to be replaced once a year. If you used plastic bottles with your first child, you’re definitely going to need a new set for your second.

Phillips-Walker elaborates, “Replace these if they are scratched on the inside, as a compromised surface can hold bacteria.” The same applies to breast pump parts—while the pump itself can be reused across multiple children, the tubing, valves and membranes can break down or even develop mold over time and should always be replaced for each baby. Starting fresh with these essentials helps ensure safe, clean feeding for your new little one.

Baby bottles

What We Love
  • Easier to clean than some vent systems
  • Ergonomic shape is easy to hold
Things To Consider
  • Known for its very slow flow

Baby bottles are an essential second registry item, and I personally loved this Anti-Colic option for my little one. And it's not just me—Philips Avent Anti-Colic Bottles are Best of The Bump winners for two consecutive years. The innovative design draws air away from the nipple, keeping it full of milk even when the bottle is held horizontally. This allows babies to feed in a more upright position, which can help reduce gas, reflux and fussiness. With minimal parts and easy cleaning, it’s a practical choice for busy second-time parents.

Replacement breast pump parts

Lansinoh Breast Pump Parts Bundle for Signature Pro and Smartpump
Image: Lansinoh
Buying Options
Lansinoh|$16
What We Love
  • Contains typically worn-out parts
  • Cost-effective
Things To Consider
  • Only compatible with Signature Pro and Smartpump

When you're preparing for baby number two, replacement pump parts are an easy item to overlook, but they’re essential. Even if your breast pump motor still works, the parts that actually contact milk (tubing, flanges, membranes, valves) naturally wear down, lose suction, or can harbor moisture. This all-in-one Lansinoh bundle gives you fresh, hygienic components that are second-baby-ready. Of course, if you don’t have a Lansinoh breast pump, you’ll have to choose a set that’s compatible with your pump brand. Even though I intended to breastfeed, I was sure to have an extra set of pump parts on hand when baby number two arrived.

Second Baby Registry Diapering Essentials

Your diapering needs look a little different the second time around. The big-ticket items, like a changing table, can be reused without hesitation (provided they’re in good shape). But anything disposable is going to be repurchased, and that means diapers, and plenty of 'em. (And diaper rash cream while you’re at it!) Fortunately, with a toddler underfoot and a newborn in the mix, parents quickly learn which products actually make diaper changes easier, cleaner and less stressful, so you may find yourself choosing different brands than you did for your first baby.

Our recommendation here is for disposable diapers, but even if you’re using cloth diapers, they’re a no-go for reuse—remember, Phillips-Walker cautions against reusing anything that’s been soiled, and nothing gets more soiled than diapers.

Diapers

Rascals Premium Diapers

Buying Options
Walmart|$19.97
What We Love
  • Very affordable, but absorbent
  • Wide range of sizes
Things To Consider
  • Could have been stretchier, according to our tester

When baby number two arrived, I ditched the pricey diapers and switched to Rascals, and I was genuinely shocked by how much better they performed. These diapers are incredibly absorbent, soft and gentle on sensitive skin, with no chlorine, latex or fragrance. But what really stood out is how well they fit. Two different brands of diapers can suit the same baby very differently. The brand I used for my first worked great for his petite frame, but my second was much chunkier, and Rascal + Friends provided a far more secure, leak-proof fit. Affordable, reliable and impressively absorbent, they quickly became (and still are!) what I use for my son. Product tester Jacyln G, mom of a 5-month-old, agrees, stating, “I had no leaks or beyond-the-diaper blowouts even when worn overnight.”

Diaper rash cream

What We Love
  • Highly effective at treating diaper rash
  • NEA Seal of Acceptance
Things To Consider
  • Better for treatment than prevention
  • Relatively high price point

Triple Paste has been my go-to recommendation for years. I still remember when the little girl next door had a painful diaper rash that wasn’t improving with the cream her parents were using. I handed them a tube of Triple Paste and by morning, her rash was gone. Her mom and dad couldn’t believe the difference. It’s a thick, fragrance-free, maximum-strength formula that creates a reliably protective barrier on delicate skin. Our product tester, Amelia R., mom of an 8-month-old, agrees: “While it took a couple [of] minutes to fully absorb, in doing so I thought it proved to be a strong barrier between a diaper and baby's delicate skin.” It's a product I pick up time and time again (I still use it on my five-year-old for irritation) and recommend to every parent. Diaper rash creams expire, so even if you have some lying around the house from your first child it's a must-have item for a second baby registry.

Second Baby Registry Health Essentials

With a second baby, certain safety and health items have to be replaced. Anything that goes in your baby’s nose, mouth or bottom should be replaced for hygiene reasons—products like rectal thermometers and aspirators simply “cannot be properly sanitized” according to Phillips-Walker. Plus, having fresh, reliable tools on hand becomes even more critical when you’re juggling two little ones—kids are regularly passing each other colds and flus.

Rectal thermometer

Vicks Baby Rectal Thermometer
Image: Walmart
What We Love
  • Quick readings
  • Short tip for gentle use
Things To Consider
  • Mixed reviews on durability

A reliable rectal thermometer is a must for newborn care, and it’s one item you obviously shouldn’t reuse the second time around. This was the first item I put on my second baby registry, and I had this one from Vicks for both my boys. This model’s short, flexible tip makes gentle, accurate rectal readings easy, and the large LCD screen delivers fast, clear results when you’re trying to determine whether baby has a fever.

As Phillips-Walker explains, “Any thermometer that is used for an orifice without a cover should be replaced. This cannot be thoroughly sanitized so it is just best to replace it.” Adding a fresh thermometer to your second baby registry ensures safe, hygienic temperature checks from day one.

Nasal aspirator

Playhouse MD Booger Buddy Nasal Aspirator
Image: Playhouse MD
What We Love
  • -Built-in LED light for nighttime use
  • Cute design distracts baby
  • Easy to clean
Things To Consider
  • Replacement filters sold separately

A nasal aspirator is one of those small-but-mighty essentials you’ll be grateful to have on hand, especially with two kids in the house. And it’s also something you shouldn’t reuse from your first baby. As Phillips-Walker explains, “If anything contacts the child directly it should be replaced to avoid cross-contamination.” The Playhouse MD Booger Buddy is a gentle, doctor-designed nasal aspirator that helps clear congestion quickly, with a light-up mode to help you see what’s going on even during nighttime wake-ups, and disposable filters that make cleaning simple. Adding a fresh nasal aspirator to your second baby registry ensures safe, hygienic sick-day care from day one.

What Else Do I Need?

Not everything you need for a second child goes on a registry. There are a few essentials worth mentioning that you’ll likely pick up on your own:

Small items and disposable needs

According to Phillips-Walkers, any small hygiene tool like a pair of nail clippers will need to be replaced. She also cautions that medicines like baby Tylenol, gas drops or saline mist all expire, so that container you’ve had sitting in the medicine cabinet for emergencies isn’t going to get the job done.

Big sibling gifts

In the excitement of preparing for your second baby, it’s important to not forget about their soon-to-be big sibling. A few thoughtful items just for them can make the transition smoother and help them feel included in all the excitement. When my second child was born, we gifted him a special toy “from the baby,” and it made the moment so sweet. Kimminau suggests "toys or things they want, snacks they like that you want to stock up on, or big sibling books and clothing. The bigger child getting presents too is such a helpful way to include them in the process!”

Personalized big sibling book

Wonderbly A New Sibling Book
Image: Wonderbly
What We Love
  • Thick, quality binding
  • Vibrant colors
  • Dedication page for additional personalization
Things To Consider
  • Personalization doesn’t appear on every page

Want your older child to feel truly celebrated when their baby sibling arrives? The Wonderbly personalized big sibling book puts them at the center of the story, letting you add their name and choose a character that represents them throughout the book. You can also include a heartfelt, personalized dedication. Korin M., a mom of four, says that Wonderbly's personalization is “smart and thorough, without being too over-the-top.” This thoughtful gift helps your firstborn feel proud of their new role while making storytime extra special with a keepsake to be cherished forever.

Made from soft, high-quality cotton, it’s comfy enough for everyday wear and cute enough for those first sibling photos. A small gift like this helps older kids feel proud and involved during a big transition. As Martina G., senior e-commerce editor for The Bump, shares, “A couple of years ago, I bought this ‘big bro’ t-shirt for a family friend who was welcoming their second child. It went down a treat!”
