What months make up the spring season?
Springtime can look a little different depending on where you are in the world. In the northern hemisphere, spring occurs during the months of March, April, and May. That means North America, northern South America, Europe, most of Africa, and most of Asia experience spring during these months. But in the southern hemisphere—which includes southern South America, a third of Africa, Australia, and some of Asia’s islands—the spring occurs in September, October, and November. Though the territories of the southern hemisphere aren’t quite the number of its counterpart, a whopping 800 million people still call it home.
What happens in spring?
Spring is the re-emergence of sunshine and daylight equilibrium! The winter comprises long nights, but the spring is based on the vernal equinox, where day and night are of equal length. But not only is the planetary alignment a key factor of the spring, the sweet array of baby animals born is enough to make anyone’s heart swell! The critters habitually born during spring are often forest dwellers; deer, wolves, coyotes, bears, raccoons, skunks, foxes, and birds are just a few! But on farms and ranches, March through May marks the beginning of life for calves, lambs, and foals. This cycle of births lines up with the freshness of spring plant growth, giving the newest additions to the family more nutrient-rich food to start life with.

Spring is a time for gorgeous flowers to sprout, including daffodils, hyacinths, lilacs, lilies, primrose, pansies, tulips, iris, and snowdrops, just to name a few. Their Latin names are narcissus, hyacinthus, syringa, lilium, primula vulgaris, viola tricolor var. hortensis, tulipa, iris, galanthus, respectively. Who knew you were getting so close to speaking such an ancient tongue?
