I’m a mom of four who has set up baby rooms in three different homes. I’ve done so while living in tiny city apartments as well as roomier suburban houses—each experience felt different, but the nursery essentials stayed the same.

Whether you’re buying everything yourself or putting together a registry, planning baby’s nursery can be overwhelming, and it can feel like you need more stuff than you actually do. But it’s manageable if you prioritize the must-haves and don’t try to reinvent your living space. “A nursery should feel like a soft extension of your home, not a themed outlier,” says Kelsey Matyas, an interior designer based in New York City. “Choose colors and furniture that can transition as your baby grows, and focus on comfort for you just as much as for baby. You’ll be spending countless hours in this space—feeding, changing, reading.”

With that in mind, we tapped a pediatrician, three interior designers and several regular parents who’ve been through the process themselves for feedback on what they consider to be the true nursery essentials. We also leaned on three years of product testing and reader surveys (and my own experience as a mom!) to make sure we only recommend products that we’d feel comfortable using with our own families. You can always add more to your nursery as you go, but the products here will cover your basic needs for sleep, storage, changing and more, in a cozy and well-organized space for your growing family.

Baby Nursery Sleep Essentials

New babies spend a lot of time sleeping, and Danielle Fisher, MD, a pediatrician in Santa Monica, California, says the first thing you have to do is make sure you’ve got a safe space for all those snoozes. “Cribs need to be bare—no bumpers,” she says, adding that even if a bumper is advertised as breathable, it still poses a suffocation risk. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has further guidance for safe sleep, but as far as your nursery is concerned, your needs are clear and simple: “You need to have a tight, fitted crib sheet and a mattress that is firm,” says Fisher.

Once that’s settled, you have a lot of leeway to pick the crib that’s best for your space. “If the room is small, look for a mini crib,” says Jennifer Press, a New York-based designer. “Otherwise a standard crib is great.” Matyas, however, particularly likes convertible cribs with conversion kits. “They allow your little one to transition from baby to toddler seamlessly, extending the life of the piece and maintaining visual consistency in the room,” she says.

Beyond the crib, Matyas recommends using blackout shades to control the light and support consistent sleep schedules. “They add a tailored, elevated look to the space while keeping the room dark for naps and early bedtimes,” she says. Daniel C., a dad of one and associate director of e-commerce content for The Bump, agrees. “Blackout curtains aren’t just a nice-to-have. I don’t know how we ever would have gotten my daughter to sleep without them.”

Convertible crib

What We Love
  • Easy conversion at an affordable price
  • Chic, modern design with a large color range
  • Sturdy build
Things To Consider
  • Large warning labels at the head and footrest

The crib is the focal point of baby’s room—Matyas calls it the “visual anchor”—so it’s a great first piece of furniture to choose. And Press is a big fan of Babyletto cribs. “They're stylish without breaking the bank,” she says. And I can vouch for it—my family has used the Babyletto Hudson 3-in-1 for years, converting it into a toddler bed and back with each child. It’s held up beautifully over seven years, with only a few scratches and dings. The crib has four adjustable mattress heights, which is handy for getting baby in and out without wrecking your back. It’s also GreenGuard Gold certified to support good indoor air quality, and comes in a slew of colors and finishes, so you can really build the look of your room around it.

Firm crib mattress

Newton Baby Crib Mattress
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • More breathable than a standard mattress
  • Entire mattress is washable
Things To Consider
  • Mattress may need to air out first

A firm mattress is a must for safe sleep. Parents in our research rave about the Newton Baby mattress, which has a firm-but-airy core that’s designed to support airflow to lower the risk of suffocation. (Of course, as Fisher stresses, you still need to follow safe sleep practices—no mattress core is a substitute for keeping the crib free of other objects.)

And while firmness is important, it’s not the only thing you have to worry about. Babies have a tendency to make a mess in their sleep—the dreaded nighttime blowout is going to happen—so you want a mattress that’s easy to clean. Like a lot of crib mattresses, the Newton Baby has a removable, machine washable cover. But unlike other mattresses, the Newton Baby is 100% washable. The inner cover can be spot cleaned, and even the core can be washed in the shower or with a hose.

Crib sheets

What We Love
  • Soft and comfortable
  • Holds up well over regular use
  • Sweet designs
Things To Consider
  • Has an initial smell that goes away after washing

I have a stack of crib sheets in my linen closet, but this Burt’s Bees option is the one I consistently reach for. It’s soft, GOTS-certified and made from 100 percent organic cotton. It also works well against my daughter’s sensitive skin—a fact I’ve seen other parents mention several times in the parent groups. The elastic is strong, and does a nice job of hugging the corners of my daughter’s mattress. Once it’s on, the surface is nice and smooth—I’ve never felt like the corners would pop up or the fabric would get bunched. We’ve had these sheets for over a year, and they’ve held up beautifully under near-weekly use.

What We Love
  • Tailored look
  • Hidden blackout lining
Things To Consider
  • Spot or wipe clean only

The right blackout shades can make all the difference between baby taking a much-needed nap and an over-tired afternoon tantrum. “Opt for blackout roman shades to control natural light and help support consistent sleep schedules,” Matyas says. “They add a tailored, elevated look to the space while keeping the room dark for naps and early bedtimes.” These curtains from Target’s Pillowfort line offer the elegant pleats of a roman shade at a relatively affordable price.

Baby Nursery Feeding Essentials

Whether you’re planning to bottle-feed or nurse your little one, there aren’t a lot of feeding essentials that are specifically tied to the nursery—it’s the kind of activity you’ll be doing in every room in the house. But you’re still going to need a dedicated feeding space in baby’s room, and Matyas says to invest in a good glider or rocker. “You’ll thank me during those 2 a.m. feeds,” she jokes. “A glider with good back support and a small side table for bottles, pacifiers and water is worth every penny.”

Comfortable glider

DaVinci Suzy Recliner and Swivel Glider
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Quiet gliding mechanism
  • Easy to clean
  • Good value
Things To Consider
  • Recline may be a little stiff at first

Blanka, a first-time mom in Texas, also recommends having a glider, "especially if you are planning to nurse.” But one of the problems parents run into when they shop for a recliner is that they can be so expensive. And while this type of furniture is never going to be cheap, the DaVinci Suzy Recliner and Swivel Glider rings up for notably less expensive than many of its competitors. Our product tester Audrey found that the upholstery is soft and stain-resistant—spilled formula wiped-up easily and didn’t leave a mark. This chair has a quiet gliding motion and swivels 270 degrees, giving you plenty of options for gentle movement to lull baby to sleep.

What We Love
  • Soft, rounded exterior is baby- and toddler-friendly
  • Hard, flat top is perfect for bottles
  • Hidden storage
Things To Consider
  • Expensive

A side table can seem like an afterthought, but you’ll be glad you made the investment when you need someplace to stash your stuff while tending to your little one. I like this Lumi side table for its soft, kid-friendly design (no sharp edges here!) and hidden storage that little ones can’t easily access. While your newborn is unlikely to try to open drawers, they tend to be toddler magnets. As your child becomes mobile, your appreciation for this table and its smart design will only grow.

Baby Nursery Diapering Essentials

When you’re expecting a baby, one thing about your future is absolutely certain: You’re going to be changing a ton of diapers. Obviously you’ll need a place for diaper changes, but our experts agreed that a dedicated changing table was unnecessary—they feel (and we agree!) that it’s best to look for a dresser that pulls double duty as a changing table. However, that does mean you’re going to need a changing pad that will keep baby comfy and secure on top of the dresser.

What’s more, any changing station uses a lot of supplies like wipes, diapers and cream, so your nursery is going to need a place to put those things. What’s more, that place has to be within easy reach of where you plan to change baby. “You don’t want your diapers and wipes to be across the room,” Fisher says. “You don’t want to have to move baby mid-change or be tempted to take a chance to run across the room to grab something.” She adds that for safety reasons, “Everything should be in arm’s reach.” You never want to leave baby unattended on top of a changing table or dresser, even for a quick dash. A small caddy that can sit on the dresser alongside the changing pad will make sure you always have what you need right at hand.

And of course, when all is said and done, you’re going to need to throw those messy diapers away! And a normal wastebin’s not going to cut it—you’l want to pick up a diaper pail that keeps smells in the trash where they belong.

Diaper caddy

OXO Tot Diaper Caddy
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Easy to wipe clean
  • Included portable changing mat
Things To Consider
  • Small size means you need to refill it every few days

Price recommends looking for a diaper caddy made from a hard material like acrylic, for one simple reason: It cleans easily. If your caddy happens to get messy (and they almost always do at some point), simply wipe it down with all-purpose cleaner or scrub it in the sink.

This option from OXO Tot has plenty of storage space to keep you well organized, and can be easily toted from room to room thanks to the moveable handle. The included changing mat is a nice bonus too (a mat you can roll up and stick in your diaper bag is great for on-the-go changes), although you’ll probably want something more secure for your dedicated diaper station.

Changing pad

Munchkin Secure Grip Changing Pad with Cover

What We Love
  • Contoured design
  • Rubber grips on bottom
  • Easy-to-clean cover
Things To Consider
  • May not fit some changing tables

The Secure Grip Changing Pad from Munchkin is designed with safety in mind, from the non-slip rubber grips on all four corners, to the contoured edges to block accidental roll-offs, to the buckled safety strap that keeps your little one in place. What’s more, our product tester Erin loved this changing pad—she had high praise for the removable, machine-washable cover (which she described as “super soft”) as well as the safety features. Erin tells us, “[It] stayed put while we changed our daughter, so our hands were free to focus on her and not a wiggling changing pad.”

Diaper pail

Ubbi Steel Diaper Pail
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Stylish design
  • Narrow footprint
  • Compatible with standard trash bags
Things To Consider
  • Steel doesn’t absorb odors like some other materials

A good diaper pail is a must for keeping odors at bay. Ubbi’s steel diaper pail is a Bump favorite for its ability to balance function and fashion while keeping diapers out of view. It also comes recommended by Matyas, who calls it a “design-minded choice” thanks to its neutral finishes. I’ve used my Ubbi for years and appreciate its sleek look and space-saving construction. But one of my favorite perks is that you can use regular trash bags inside this, ultimately saving you money that you would have spent on specialized bags.

Baby Nursery Storage Essentials

“Storage is gold,” says Coco Greenblum, an interior designer in Los Angeles. And if you didn’t know that before you had a child, you’ll definitely learn it after! Baby’s going to have all sorts of new belongings that have to go somewhere—not just diaper supplies, but also clothing, books and toys. (Remember, it’s never too early to read to baby!)

Greenblum’s advice is to looks for furniture that also works as storage. She says, “I love incorporating pieces that are both beautiful and practical—dressers that double as changing tables, side tables with drawers, or decorative chests that conceal toys. Thoughtful storage keeps the space feeling calm and organized.” Functional storage is always a great way to save space and money—and it looks good too!

Combination dresser and changing table

Storkcraft Casablanca 6-Drawer Dresser

What We Love
  • Chic but fun design
  • Sturdy construction
  • Plenty of organizational space
Things To Consider
  • Need to purchase changing mat separately

As you’ve probably noticed, our experts are big on dual-purpose furniture. But which one to choose? Meaghan, a first-time mom in New Jersey, raves about the Storkcraft dresser that she chose for her child’s nursery (with a Keekaroo Baby Changer mat on top). “It’s the perfect length for the wall I placed it against and has six large, deep drawers with plenty of storage,” she says. “I actually still have two drawers I haven’t filled yet, so it’s been such a great pick for maximizing space.” The scalloped base creates a fun vibe too, and it comes in five different finishes.

If you wind up with extra space like Meaghan did, Maytas suggests using a drawer for overflow of your diapering essentials like diapers, wipes and creams. You can keep a few of each on top of the dresser in your caddy, and the rest within easy reach if you forget to refill.

What We Love
  • Sleek, stylish look
  • Thoughtful design lets you tuck some toys out of view
  • Low enough for little ones to access
Things To Consider
  • Pricey

The Lovevery Montessori Playshelf has been a buzzy accessory in the parenting groups for years. Alyssa, a mom of two, acknowledges that when she bought this shelf it was a bit of a splurge. “And honestly,” she says, “it’s been worth it. I wanted something that looked nice but was still super functional.” She especially liked the hidden storage in the back—she tells us, “I can tuck toys away and rotate them every so often.” Made from 100 percent birchwood, this shelf is sturdy enough to last for years. Even better: It’s not an obvious piece of “baby” furniture, so you can repurpose it later.

Baby Nursery Play Essentials

Playtime is an important part of baby’s development, and trust us: You’re going to accumulate quite a few toys over time. But it can also be helpful to have a few on-hand when your little one is born—to decorate as much as to prepare for play. “I see toys as part of the decor,” says Greenblum. “They bring shape, color and texture to the palette in an organic way,” If you want to maintain a certain aesthetic in your baby nursery, Matyas suggests that you “incorporate toys intentionally, rather than letting them take over.”

Once you’ve got toys, you’re also going to need a place for baby to play. Tummy time can start as soon as baby is born, and a soft rug or play mat is essential so you’re not just laying baby down on a hard floor. You’ll get a lot of use out of that soft space as baby grows—as Press points out, “there will be some tumbling as they learn to sit up, pull up and walk, and you want a soft landing spot.”

Versatile play mat

House of Noa Little Nomad Play Mat
Image: House of Noa
What We Love
  • Pretty designs
  • Soft, interlocking pieces
  • Easy to move
Things To Consider
  • Firmer than some options
  • Not pet-friendly

Meaghan included a House of Noa play mat in her daughter’s nursery “to make the room feel inviting and functional at her level.” And we can vouch for the performance—our product tester Niki found this mat to be very heavy-duty and high quality. She said it was firm, but well-cushioned, with a versatile, rug-like design that can be used nearly anywhere in your home. Interlocking tiles make it easy to fit the mat to your space, and when I’ve used this mat, I’ve found it to have a nice, comfortable feel for babies and adults alike. And it’s perfect for tummy time, too.

Wooden toys

Melissa & Doug Stacking Train
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Durable toy that can be used for years
  • Multiple ways to play
  • Can be displayed on a shelf until baby's ready
Things To Consider
  • Bright colors aren’t for everyone

Of course there’s no one toy you should buy for your child—in fact, you’ll be buying plenty of them over the course of the coming year. And newborn babies aren’t exactly interactive for the first couple months, so your first toys will be as much about decorating the room as anything else. That being said, the Melissa & Doug Stacking Train is practically an institution, thanks to its classic design and durable build. I have one that we got when my oldest child was born, and it’s held up beautifully through three more kids. The train offers different blocks kids can stack and play with separately, and it can be pushed or pulled. When play time is over, you can simply display it on a shelf or tuck it away.

Baby Nursery Safety Essentials

Of course, no matter how nice a room looks or how useful the furniture is, none of it matters if it’s not a safe space for baby. Make sure there are no cords your little one can easily grab or potential choking hazards laying around, Fisher says. And it may seem early to put in outlet covers—baby won’t be exploring with their fingers for a while—but Fisher recommends doing this now so you don’t forget later. “It never hurts to prepare in advance,” she says. “I like [installing] outlet covers from the beginning. It’s a good habit to get into.”

For safety reasons, Fisher recommends keeping an eye on the temperature in baby’s room—she says 68 to 74 degrees Fahrenheit is the sweet spot. And you’re going to need a way to keep an eye on baby when you’re not in the room. Whether it’s nap time or overnight, a good baby monitor will give you peace of mind—or let you respond immediately to emergencies. But this is another opportunity to double up with multipurpose products, as a good monitor will have a built-in room thermometer.

Outlet covers

Babepai Outlet Covers
Image: Amazon
What We Love
  • Unique design
  • Hard for babies and toddlers to pull out
  • Inexpensive
Things To Consider
  • Small enough to lose when you pull them out

My husband and I got these after my oldest child discovered he loved pulling out the outlet covers we used to use. Thankfully these models have a unique design with a hidden pull-tab that’s tricky for kids to figure out, keeping them firmly in place. The covers also blend in well with existing outlets, so they don’t create an eyesore. I have these all over my house and love them. The bargain price is a nice perk, too.

Smart baby monitor

What We Love
  • Packed with impressive features
  • Very clear picture
  • Strong security and encryption
Things To Consider
  • No pan or tilt features

The Nanit Pro is a massively popular baby monitor—when we surveyed our readership and asked about their monitor of choice, a full 20 percent of parents said they rely on it to keep tabs on their little one. What’s more, our product tester Janelle used the Nanit Pro over the course of seven months, and found that it has top-tier video and audio performance. “The camera and audio quality are excellent,” she says. “It picks up background sounds from other rooms and even the sound machine. We can clearly hear and see our baby day or night, including details like her eyes.” This performance, coupled with impressive sleep tracking and smart insights, earned the Nanit Pro a Best of The Bump award for best WiFi baby monitor two years in a row.

As an added bonus: Fisher recommends keeping tabs on the temperature in your baby’s room to make sure it’s not too hot or cold, and the Nanit monitor has a built-in thermometer to make this easy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need blackout curtains in baby’s nursery?

It’s a good idea to have blackout curtains or at least some kind of window covering, according to Fisher. “When your baby is a few months old, they will be affected by light and dark cues,” she says. If you want to keep your child on a schedule, blackout curtains can be helpful for signaling when it’s time to sleep.

What else should I include in baby’s room?

While it’s not strictly necessary, Matyas reminds us to add a personal touch to your nursery through decorations and wall hangings. She suggests, “Frame meaningful art or your baby’s initials rather than heavily themed prints; it creates a timeless space.” She also stresses the importance of proper lighting. “Layered lighting is key,” she says. “A mix of soft overhead, dimmable sconce or lamp lighting and a nightlight for feeds.”

What are good baby nursery colors?

Press recommends picking colors that your little one can grow into. “Opt for softer or deeper colors on the walls—mint green as opposed to lime green, or indigo blue as opposed to sky blue—and then bring in the punchy, saturated colors in the art, which can easily be changed,” she says.

That being said, Greenblum reminds us, “Have fun with it! Children’s spaces are truly limitless—they’re the perfect opportunity to explore color, pattern and a sense of play that might not feel as appropriate in a great room or more formal space.”
