5 Best Pregnancy-Safe Sunscreens, Tested by Moms-to-Be
In a nutshell
Based on feedback from independent product testers and two dermatologists, we’ve selected Solara Skincare Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen Milk as the overall best pregnancy-safe facial sunscreen, while Badger Active Mineral Sunscreen Cream was chosen as the overall best pregnancy-safe body sunscreen. Both products have a high level of SPF protection and high ratings in the Environmental Working Group (EWG)'s 2026 report.
Sun’s out, bump’s out! Just don’t forget to lather up your face and body with good old SPF. If you’re wondering whether sunscreen is safe during pregnancy, the short answer is yes, absolutely, but finding the right sunscreen during pregnancy can be an uphill battle. Trust me, I would know: I’m currently pregnant with twins, which has created a whole new set of skin issues. Not only am I extra cautious about finding pregnancy-safe ingredients, my skin turned on me in the third trimester. I’ve been more prone to issues like acne breakouts and dryness and my skin has become hypersensitive. My go-to products apparently don’t mix with my pregnant self. I am suddenly coping with both bad physical reactions and cosmetic issues like white cast and piling under makeup.
There are two main types of sunscreen: physical sunblock (also known as mineral) and chemical formulas. According to Dr. Nava Greenfield, MD, a dermatologist at Schweiger Dermatology Group in Brooklyn, New York, the best sunscreen for pregnancy uses a physical blocker instead of a chemical one. “Chemical blockers absorb the sun rays, while physical ones bounce the sun rays off the skin,” she explains.
Dr. Greenfield advises expectant parents to look for ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide on the label rather than chemicals like oxybenzone, avobenzone or octinoxate. Beyond that, she recommends choosing a fragrance-free option (although scent-sensitive moms-to-be may not need that advice!).
So you’ve picked an option with the right ingredients, avoided unpleasant smells—all set, right? Well, not so fast. In May of 2026, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) published a major overhaul of their safety recommendations for sunscreens. And out of the almost 2,800 sunscreens they looked at, less than 20 percent made the grade. In fact, some products that cleared their standards in past years no longer do. So we’ve taken their recommendations into account and, combined with our rigorous product testing, put together a list of the best and safest products on the market.
We took the following steps to find the best pregnancy-safe sunscreen on the market:
- We conducted extensive market research to shortlist 17 face and body sunscreens for testing, and then enlisted the help of four pregnant product testers, myself included. We tried the products on our own skin and rated each based on ease of use, scent, texture, color, skincare features effectiveness, ingredients and value for money. From there we reviewed the testing results and selected the six top-rated products for inclusion in this article.
- I, along with the other moms-to-be, applied various sunblocks and sunscreens in the morning (although, given I’m in my third trimester and sleeping like a housecat, morning is subjective here) and went about my usual day, errands and all. I tested products both with and without makeup to ensure they hold up in both personal and professional settings.
- We surveyed over 400 parents in The Bump community and asked about their favorite pregnancy-safe sunscreen, as well as what they did and didn’t like about it.
- We interviewed two board-certified dermatologists to get the lowdown on what to look for (and what to avoid) when buying a pregnancy-safe sunscreen. Following their advice, we avoided any products that contained ingredients they advised expectant mothers not to use.
- Every option on this list has received a high safety and efficacy rating from the EWG (either EWG verified or a score of 1 or 2).
- To see how these products worked for a variety of expectant moms, we scoured forums and message boards and read user reviews to find out what parents across the country looked for in pregnancy-safe sunblock.
Editorial integrity is at the heart of everything we publish. Read more about how The Bump develops our product reviews.
Overall best pregnancy-safe facial sunscreen
- Felt like skin care
- SPF 50 protection
- No white cast
- Expensive
The Bump takeaway: Solara Skincare Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen Milk is a high-performing facial sunscreen with an easy application that wears comfortably on hot days.
Wearing facial sunscreen daily is the best way to preserve your skin health and also helps to reduce the risk of melasma, which is linked to sun or heat exposure. With this in mind, we tested a range of pregnancy-safe facial sunscreens—and the Solara Skincare Guardian Angel Super Peptide Sunscreen Milk emerged as a clear winner in this category.
Texture
Our product tester Logan used this sunscreen during her third trimester, and it earned high scores across the board. She said it was easy to dispense the sunscreen with the dropper and she loved the lightweight, liquid texture. “It felt smooth on application and never felt greasy. It also dried down very quickly, allowing me to move on without it feeling heavy on my skin,” she remarked, adding that it felt “cool and hydrating” (always a plus if you’re feeling overheated due to pregnancy) and sat well underneath her makeup.
While it’s free from artificial fragrances, Logan noted that the sunscreen did have a mild scent. “It was not unpleasant, if anything it just smells ‘clean’ and sunscreen-y,” she explained.
One of the biggest issues with mineral sunscreens is that they can leave you looking as pale as Casper the ghost. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Solara Skincare. Although the sunscreen is white in color when dispensed, it quickly turns translucent as you rub it in. “It did not leave any white cast, nor did it leave my skin looking pale or as if it had any sunscreen on,” says Logan happily.
Effectiveness
In terms of effectiveness, this product earned a top score. “I was very happy with the 50 SPF that this sunscreen offered,” says Logan, who noted that she reapplied it every three to four hours and “did not suffer any sunburn, even after using [it for] three days in full-sun at the beach.” Logan felt that this sunscreen would last for several months, and while she felt the price was a little high, she said she would consider repurchasing it as “the application made it worth it.”
SPF: 50 | Key ingredient: Zinc oxide 12% | EWG rating: EWG verified | Quantity: 1 fl. oz.
Our product tester says:
“I loved the way this felt on my skin. It performed most like a skin care product, like a serum that easily melted into the skin.”
Overall best pregnancy-safe sunscreen for body
- Minimal ingredients
- Water-resistant
- Unscented
- May leave a white cast on darker skin tones
The Bump takeaway: Badger Active Mineral Sunscreen Cream is made from natural ingredients, but doesn't come with a scent or sacrifice performance.
The safest sunscreens for pregnancy are natural formulas that physically block UV rays. And this organic sunscreen by Badger does just that. Pregnant product tester Whisper used the sunscreen on her body and gave it a 10 out of 10 score for effectiveness. “It does what it was created to do,” says Whisper, who confirmed that “it’s water resistant for about 40 minutes just like it claims.” But what really sets this product apart is the fact that it’s made with only five ingredients: Zinc oxide, sunflower oil, beeswax, sunflower vitamin E and seabuckthorn extract. That's it.
Scent
“Considering your skin is the largest organ your body has what you put on it matters,” says Whisper, who was happy to discover that “all [of the] ingredients are plant-based or beeswax.” And while some natural sunblocks have an earthy scent, our product tester reported that this sunscreen “doesn’t have much of a smell at all, which is fine when you're pregnant [as] smells can make you sick.”
Texture
It's worth noting that Whisper tells us this is a very thick sunscreen. “I mean like I had to really squeeze the tube to get some out,” she says. This dense texture is due to the fact that it's a water-free formula. To make it more pliable, the brand advises users to knead the tube before each use.
Despite the fact that it is a thick, mineral sunscreen our product tester said there was “no white cast.” In fact, she said it was “moisturizing” and that it left her “a little oily looking.” Overall, she felt it was worth the money and said “this sunscreen is gonna last me awhile because it goes a long way.”
SPF: 30 | Key ingredient: Zinc oxide 18.75% | EWG rating: 1 | Quantity: 2.9 fl. oz.
Our product tester says:
“I would recommend this to pregnant people. It gets the job done and it is a low-smelling sunscreen. It contains six natural ingredients, which is phenomenal.”
Best pregnancy-safe sunscreen for darker skin tones
- 14 shades including options for darker skin tones
- Vegan and cruelty-free
- Sheer yet buildable coverage
- Natural scent
- Some customers said they had issues with color matching
The Bump takeaway: With 14 different shades to choose from, Well People Bio Tint is a high-performing option for a wide variety of skin tones.
Like a product that does it all—and for a broad range of skin tones? This three-in-one skin tint moisturizes, blurs imperfections and shields your face from harmful UV rays. Better yet, it’s available in 14 different shades that range from fair to deep. Whisper used the Well People Bio Tint in shade 7N, and said “the color match is pretty spot on.” She gave it a 10 out of 10 score for color and said: “I found my shade and it is very close to my natural shade. No white cast from this product.”
Texture
Aside from the great color match, our product tester was a fan of the “creamy texture,” which reportedly “feels just like your everyday foundation.” According to Whisper, one or two pumps is all you need for sheer coverage. But she went on to say that “it’s buildable, meaning you can replace your foundation with it.” She liked that it “absorbed very easily” and feels “like you’re wearing nothing” as there's no greasy residue.
Ingredients
Our product tester applied the tinted sunscreen once in the morning and it was very effective. It “works great” she said, noting that it’s sweat- and water-resistant and that she experienced “no sunburn.” She was also happy to discover that this product was vegan and cruelty-free. “It is a plant-based product and the ingredients show that to be true. A longer list but things like aloe, shea butter, broccoli seed oil, raspberry seed oil and tons of other great plant products,” says Whisper.
Scent
As it is a plant-based formula it does have “a very natural smell,” which some people may not like. However, Whisper noted that “the smell fades once it’s dried down.” As she concluded her review, our product tester said this sunscreen was “a great buy” and added that she believes it “will probably last the rest of the year.”
SPF: 30 | Key ingredient: Zinc oxide 20% | EWG rating: EWG verified | Quantity: 1.2 fl. oz.
Our product tester says:
“Great tinted moisturizer. Gave my face a natural glow without it looking like I’m oily since I’m naturally a combination skin type.”
Best pregnancy-safe sunscreen that’s easy to reapply on the go
- Easy to apply
- Suitable for face and body
- No white cast
- Water-resistant for 80 minutes
- Waxy scent
The Bump takeaway: The stick design on Babo Botanicals Super Shield Mineral Sports Stick makes for quick reapplication, while not skimping on a high SPF rating.
A sunscreen stick is a great travel-friendly option you can throw in your purse for top-ups on the go. I first tested this product back in 2024 while pregnant with my now-toddler, and gave it a 10 out of 10 score for texture, color and value for money. And it was such a hit, I still use it today.
Application
It was very easy to just rub all over my face and hands, and it dried immediately. The feeling is very natural, like you’re not wearing sunscreen at all. Worried about the stick breaking or crumbling? Don’t sweat it. The stick stays intact as you apply.
While it can be used on your body, the brand states that this sunscreen is primarily designed for your face and high points of the body, like your shoulders. I mainly use it on my face and find this sunscreen leaves zero color on my skin.
Ingredients
As for the formula, this sunscreen contains a high percentage of zinc oxide blended with plant-based ingredients, many of which are organic. My regular, non-pregnancy sunscreen also uses zinc oxide and it's generally really great for improving my skin tone, preventing acne outbreaks and leaving my skin feeling smoother overall.
The ingredients in Babo Botanicals Super Shield Mineral Sports Stick are very similar to the product I typically use, but the cost is significantly less. I definitely think it's a great value for being only a little over $10, and I’ve recommended this product to other pregnant moms ever since I first tried it.
SPF: 50 | Key ingredient: Zinc oxide 20% | EWG rating: EWG verified | Quantity: 3 fl. oz.
Our product tester says:
“It blended in so quickly—it felt very natural, like I wasn't wearing sunscreen at all. The stick stayed intact as I applied it to my skin, and I easily got enough sunscreen on that I felt protected.”
Best pregnancy-safe facial sunscreen for dry, hormonal skin
- Hydrating formula
- Feels like skincare
- Cruelty-free and vegan
- Strong scent that lingers over time
The Bump takeaway: Crunchi Sunlight Facial combines a hydrating formula with an effective SPF rating.
Is your skin crying out for hydration? Look no further than this moisturizing formula by Crunchi. Our product tester, Brenda, used the word hydrating multiple times when describing this product and gave it a high score across multiple testing criteria.
Application
Application is quick and easy thanks to the bottle’s nifty pump dispenser. Brenda said that you only need a “small amount for sufficient coverage” and said “it applies smoothly and absorbs quickly, although it initially feels slightly wet on the skin.”
Texture
When describing the texture, our product tester said it has a “watery consistency that feels comfortable on the skin.” She was pleasantly surprised to find the white lotion didn’t leave a white cast or make her look pale: “Instead, it absorbs well, providing a hydrated, natural look without any tint.”
It also earned a high score for effectiveness and Brenda told us that “the sunscreen provided excellent SPF protection, preventing sunburn even with reapplication every two hours.”
Ingredients
While some of the ingredients were unfamiliar to our product tester the organic formula didn’t cause any skin irritation or breakouts and included high-quality hydrating ingredients like glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and squalane. Although Brenda felt the price per ounce was a little high, she said that “its effectiveness and performance justify the cost.”
SPF: 30 | Key ingredient: Zinc oxide 12.5% | EWG rating: EWG verified | Quantity: 1 fl. oz.
Our product tester says:
“The sunscreen feels like a blend of sunscreen and serum, offering a hydrating touch with a pleasant glow.”

One more time for the people in the back: YES! There are plenty of pregnancy-safe sunscreens to choose from. You’re not necessarily more sensitive to the sun now that you’re expecting, and while uncomfortable, a sunburn won’t pose any harm to your developing baby—but like any other time in life, it’s important to shield yourself from harmful rays to protect your skin and help prevent skin cancer, says Dr. Neil Sadick, MD, founder and president of Sadick Dermatology in New York City.
When it comes to using sunscreen during pregnancy though, you’ll want to be mindful of which type you choose. Dr. Greenfield recommends physical blockers, which contain active mineral ingredients that sit on top of your skin, and have the added benefit of being all-natural. For the best protection, go for SPF 30 or higher, and make sure to reapply every two hours (or more often if you’re swimming or getting your sweat on!).
What should I look for in pregnancy safe sunscreen?
We asked members of The Bump community to tell us what they thought were the most important things to look for in a pregnancy-safe sunscreen. Most parents prioritized level of protection, a mineral (rather than chemical) block and finding an option that’s good for sensitive skin. But those weren’t the only things that mattered to them—check out some of their biggest concerns below:
