Shay Mitchell Names New Baby Girl After Beloved Family Member

Shay Mitchell and Matte Babel announced the birth of their second daughter on June 5. In an emotional Instagram post, the actress and BÉIS founder snuggled with new baby Rome and shared the meaning behind her newborn’s name.

“Losing the most important person in my life in the same year I welcomed my second daughter has shifted everything for me, but one thing remains steady in my soul—I’m certain they spent time together and that brings me peace and joy,” said Mitchell. “We’re so happy you’re here Rome, named after my best friend, my soulmate, my ‘person,’ my Grandma Romaine.”

In February, just a week after her grandmother’s passing, Mitchell announced that her 2-year-old daughter Atlas would be getting a little sister soon. The Dollface actress posted a tribute to her grandmother, sharing that she “was and will forever be my best friend” and “she was my number one cheerleader.”

When asked about her daughter’s name, Mitchell told People, “It’s a very special name and I think similar to Atlas, when I heard it, I knew it was just the perfect name.”

The Pretty Little Liars alum went on to share more about her first few weeks with Rome. “I feel awesome. I feel really, really good. It definitely takes a village. I’m really lucky my parents are in town and everybody’s been really helpful,” said Mitchell. She added, “Atlas is loving being a big sister. She is so excited. She’s been incredible. She helps me change diapers and it’s good—she loves it."

Since giving birth to her daughter a little over two weeks ago, the working mom has been out promoting her BÉIS travel brand and Onda Tequila Seltzer. Mitchell previously opened up about the mom-shaming associated with getting back to business after giving birth, saying, “It concerns me that people are so quick to pass judgment on others, especially without knowing any facts, and behind the protection of the screen.” But she added that she wouldn’t let the shamers get to her. “For me, I’m going to do exactly what I feel is right for my family.”
