Delivering your first child can be a scary unknown for both mom and dad to be. While there are plenty of ways to prepare yourself, from books and videos to blogs, classes and more, Gina Rodriguez’s husband, Joe Locicero, is going above and beyond to be trained as her doula.

The Jane The Virgin star recently shared her first-baby jitters and birth plan in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. “I’m taking some hardcore prenatal classes, working on that pelvic floor," Rodriguez said, adding, “My husband is training to be my doula. He’s really next level.”

A professional MMA fighter, Locicero isn’t content to be sidelined during his wife’s birth. “He’s a martial artist and so it’s basically, you know, he’s cornering the fight of my life," Rodriguez said about her husband’s involvement in her birth plan. “I wouldn’t call it a fight — I would say, it’s like…me climbing my Mount Everest and he’s gonna corner me for it.”

As Rodriguez’s doula Locicero will provide the physical, emotional and educational support his wife needs to “finish the fight.” The Someone Great star even joked, “He’s magical. He’s definitely the better half, so I’m hoping that he’ll just go on in there and pull our baby out.”

The couple shared the news that they were expecting with an emotional video posted to Instagram on July 30 captioned, “This birthday hits different.” The video featured a compilation of photos and videos of Rodriguez and Locicero, with a voiceover saying, “Anyone can want you, but love hits different when someone actually values you.” The last segment of the video cuts to an overjoyed Rodriguez and Locicero holding a positive pregnancy test.

Rodriguez and LoCicero started dating after LoCicero starred in an episode of Jane the Virgin in 2016 and married in May 2019. The baby will be the couple’s first child.

Our best wishes to Rodriguez and Locicero on their exciting journey to baby!
