Tip #1: Secondhand Furniture Finds

In need of furniture for your nursery? Don’t automatically turn to the big box stores, make sure you check out what you can find secondhand and then add some personal touches. We snagged our son’s armoire from Craigslist, painted it teal, and added new hardware for around $60 (check out more about our budget-friendly nursery here). Not only did it turn out great, but it is also one of the most functional pieces in the room!

Tip #2: Jazz Up The Walls

A simple way to make a big statement in any room is to paint a geometric pattern on the wall. Try to challenge yourself to think out of the “stripes” box. We ended up using a geometric square pattern, but chevrons would look hip, too! Just grab your paint bucket, painter’s tape, and you’re ready to get started.

Tip #3: Add Quirky Details

Adding a few personal touches here and there will really help your nursery feel like it is a “stand out” among the crowd. Don’t be afraid to let your quirky side come out and play a bit. Rather than choosing the traditional “baby” animals, I added a few deer items around my son’s room. Check out my DIY pillow as an example (and more here)!

Tip #4: Choose a Unique Mobile

Before my son was born, I had no idea how many different kinds of mobiles existed. You can check out Pinterest and Etsy for inspiration and then try making one of your own. Not only will you feel accomplished because you contributed to your child’s nursery, but you will also have a keepsake to enjoy later on!

Tip #5: Choose an Easy Color Palette

My husband and I actually painted this room before we found out had a little one on the way (but I was already hoping!). Once we found out we were pregnant, we started adding in a few accent colors, but did not stick to a rigid color palette. That way the nursery has an eclectic and casual feel to it while still looking fresh and polished.

Tip #6: Add Window Treatments

One of the hidden secrets to interior design is to add window treatments to every room (or at least this is my philosophy!). I can’t tell you how many people compliment the curtains in our house! Adding curtains (and I made the nursery curtains for under $30) gives a room a cozy and polished feel. An extra plus: you can close them when you want baby to sleep longer!

Tip #8: Find Fun Function Items

There is nothing more satisfying than having a well-decorated room and have it be super functional. Make sure to keep your eye out for cute but helpful items to use in your nursery. These lettered wall hooks have been a great asset to my son’s room already!

Tip #7: Add a Gallery Wall

Have you ever walked into a house and been impressed by their artwork? Here is your chance to wow your friends and family by hanging a kid-friendly gallery wall in your nursery (learn how to hang it here). I had a blast picking out different animal prints. We also added a few of our own baby pictures, a handcrafted cross stich, and my dad’s prized deer antlers! The possibilities are endless. Let your creativity guide you!
