There are a few things to take into account when it comes to deciding whether you’ll need a maternity winter coat.
- Consider your local weather. How cold does it get in your area, and will you actually need something warmer in your maternity wardrobe? Bernay advises having “at least three essentials: one heavy coat for those freezing days, a stylish, fitted coat for when you want to stay warm while looking put-together, and a lighter layer, like a cardigan coat or a lightweight trench, for those in-between days or just for comfort.”
- Layer up. According to Bernay, “the art of layering is all about balance.” For example, you can pair a bulky puffer with slimmer pieces underneath, like a fitted maternity tee or leggings. “It’s also key to pay attention to fabrics, style, shapes and lengths when layering,” adds Bernay who says that “everything should blend together and most importantly—be comfortable for you!”
- Look for adjustable styles. Outerwear is an investment, so prioritize styles that will work through all three trimesters and beyond. “Look for coats with expandable waistlines or drawstrings to accommodate your bump every step of the way,” agrees Bernay who also advises expectant moms to check that a coat is easy to put on and take off.
- Opt for high-quality materials. Check the fabric composition before you buy a maternity coat or jacket. “Wool, tweed and polyester blends as well as shearling, and high-quality faux leather are the favored cold weather fabrics to look for, they’ll keep you warm but also allow breathability,” explains Bernay. She also told us that moms-to-be should “try to avoid stiff, structured materials that don’t have any give, as these will only feel more uncomfortable as your bump grows.”
- Try on what’s already in your closet. You might just discover that an oversized coat—or one with side zippers—will still accommodate your baby bump, especially if you’ll be in your second trimester during the colder months. If not, a maternity winter jacket is truly a smart investment as you really don’t want to be freezing all season long.
